Just played my first game of 2nd ed and first game in a year. Been Warmachine insanity in my local meta but luckily a friend has also been joesing for some Wyrdness.

I'm playing the Ortegas box for now. What can I add/mix in to change up a bit. I own Death Marshalls, Witchlings, The Executioner, and enslaved Nephillim and Sonnia but I'll save her for later.

How is Abuela and how about the Lone Marshall?

Any input is welcome...

Just one more reason to like Malifaux...

Malifaux, introduced to my group very recently is rapidly gaining in popularity, below is one reason why;

Me and a buddy John got a few turns in of a Malifaux learning game and we laughed our arses off the whole time.

You can't put a price on classic moments like this;

John, "Okay, I'm charging you with my zombie Madame. I think I'll attack with her riding crop."

Eric, "Eh, I ain't worried, Perdita's got Df 8... Good Luck."

John, "EIGHT! DAMMIT!" John reads the Madame's card and laughs like a mental patient, "Dude, she's got a spell called Undress. It lowers your defense by 2... Bwahahahahahaha!!"

Eric, "So what are you saying Perdita's a lesbian?"

Josh, "Maybe she's just freaked out by rotting breasts..."

AWESOME!!!!!

In fact me and John laughed the entire time we played....

I know of a couple people in my local meta that I'm sure I can coerce into contributing. One is an incredible artist so maybe along those lines (even a recurring how to article).

Another may be right for tactics etc...

I'll be doing an editorial and an article "Malifaux-lent Meanderings" each issue as well.

If you get a chance surf over to The Ogre Kingdoms site and give the bellower issue 2 or 3 a quick look see. Its small but very popular...

It's not grabbing the marker first activation, you get it back in your deployment zone first activation. Re the others, Zoraida can get it 4" back from the centre at the cost of 4ss and Perdita can only do it with obey from 2 extra models excluding a totem (which I'm not even sure is possible?)

And Hamelin isn't only advantaged for treasure hunt, he is highly advantaged for reconnoiter, claim jump, destroy the evidence, deliver the message (with Gups), contain power, escape and survive... you get the point

So you're posit is that Hamelin IS broken or that he just has certain advantages? Not exactly selling a newcomer to Malifaux on the game...

So I've ordered the Lady Justice and the Perdita Ortega boxes. Or to be more accurate the Lady Justice box and the all the figs in the Perditia Ortega box individually.

I think I am leaning toward Guild..... plus I really like the sculpts....

The Ortegas are what sealed the deal for me. I started, very recently with the Ortega box set because of my love of everything spaghetti western and also got the Criid set because, well its Sonnia...

What will keep you in the game is the complexity of the game that you don't see at the surface and a web community that is one of the best...

I'd play that list all day long.

Perdita is also not very needy of SS. So at this point level, I would probably go with a 3 SS pool and add the Enslaved Nephilim Totem to the list. The extra Obey for another shot with Nino or Santi, or a charge from a Witchling is well worth it.

I know you said you didn't want to buy any more models, but the Nephilim is cheap (it's little) and he is almost an auto-include in most Perdita lists. Obey is one of the best spells in the game and he can cast it with a 10 of any suit on one of your own crew (which is his best use). Between the two Obeys and Trigger Happy, I think my record is 8 shots with Nino in one turn.

In fact a buddy of mine who does not play Guild just offered to sell me the Nephilim... Guess I'll take him up on it...

I would rather have the two witchlings and stones personally, but it depends on who/what you are playing. Never take Papa Loco against anyone with obey.

lol... Hadn't thought about that. Would be funny though, despite the damage I would take...

I have the Ortega box and the Sonnia box. My first game was with Sonnia and my next two with the Ortega box. I have 3 games under my belt. While I believe (maybe I'm wrong as I'm so new to the game), that Sonnia will be a more powerful Master I really enjoy Perdita and the whole "For a Few Dollars More" feel to the Ortegas.

That having been said I am thinking of switching out a couple of the Ortegas for my 25 point learning games for Witchlings. Perdita stays as does Nino. I'm thinking I like Francisco as he can also scrap it up in melee.

The question is do I replace both Santiago and Papa for 2 Witchlings and the Stones or keep 1 of them and just take a single Witchling?

I'm not buying any new models until I have a better handle on the game. So far I've faced Gremlins and the Victorias with Ronin...

I've done okay with the Perdita box as is... Any suggestions?

What if my religion includes pizza and beer?? Do those exist in Malifaux?? And am I allowed to worship them freely??

If I've learned anything in my half century of living, which includes quite a bit of miniature gaming its this; You can not please everyone. Or as Abe Lincoln said, "You can't please all the people all the time."

So don't try.

Play what you like, how you like... A church on the table doesn't profess or proselytize, it simply shows what is on every other block in any big metro area in North America...

Isaac- I know I've taken on the mantle of Lead Editor but I'd also like to write a recurring article; "Malifauxlent Meanderings". Basically a commentary on the gaming hobby with specific focus on Malifaux...

Does this mean that a model with this ability is immune to a direct hit or just to residual blast damage?

I would strongly suggest a PDF. I worked on "The Bellower" (An Ezine dedicated to WHFB Ogre-centric) for a bit which was a downloadable and its popularity is growing with each issue. Its free and GLOBAL which I think is most important at this point.

I also think we need to departmentalize the 'zine eg;

Simple enough question; Can Perdita cast Obey on a model engaged in melee?

The ruins of the abandoned town were evidence of a time when prosperity reigned. The buildings, or what was left of them were not the ramshackle wormwood huts so common this far from the Breach. But brick and mortar structures built to stand for generations.

So much for that dream...

It did mean however that the chest left out in the dust of the once well traveled street might contain a valuable yield. Soulstones most likely. But then this was Malifaux, when was anything what it seemed. Perdita Ortega sighed resolutely as she unfastened the holster cord to allow for a faster draw just in case....

"Nino! What do you see?"

"Something or someone's coming." Said Nino, the most diminutive of Papa Loco's children, "Not sure how many."

"Well, take that cannon of yours and climb up to what's left of that window. You can cover us from there." Said Perdita, pushing her long, flowing hair back behind her,"Let me know how many."

"To hell with this, I ain't waiting for them to get here, I'm going for the chest." Francisco was never a patient man.

Then, from behind came a hooting and a hollering that could mean only one thing...

"Dios Mio," Said Perdita,"How did you get out this time Papa?"

"How do I get out? I am Papa LOCO! No prison can hold me!" Papa laughed the laugh that helped earn him his nickname then pulled out a stick of high explosive, "Now Mi Corazon, who do we come to kill?"

Before Perdita could answer Nino shouted down from his perch, "Looks like five or six.... Two women up front with very long swords and three others also with swords. They move fast Sister..."

Santiago pulled both his pistols and started to ask if Nino had a shot but suddenly, impossibly, one of the women, now revealed to be twins was there in the midst of them!

Steel flashed catching the sun momentarily blinding the family of gunfighters. Before any could react Francisco was bleeding from more than a single wound.

As fast as the attack was what happened next seemed to happen even faster. Santiago barely sidestepped an attack from the same warrior woman as he stepped back to avoid the blur of the blade. While not wholly unscathed the Pistolero managed to escape further onslaught and took off running toward the chest.

Perdita grimaced, determined to show these... Outcasts what a Woman of The Guild could do!

Moving with a signature swiftness she took aim, "Nino, the other one is coming... SHOOT HER!!"

Her pistol spat twice dealing hurt and pain to this bitch who dared hurt her family.

Francisco bore down on the tall swords woman shooting her near point blank. He smiled despite the blood he felt leaking through his wounds as he watched her fall.

Nino felt more than saw the other three warriors as they advanced but could not focus on them. He knew there was something very dangerous about them but with a steel resolve he shook off the feeling and took careful aim at the fallen warriors twin.

The Repeater clapped cannon like loud dealing a mortal wound to the sword wielding warrior. She collapsed in a heap but this fight was not yet over.

Papa Loco rounded a ruined building but before he could throw one of his boom sticks the other three assassins appeared as if from nowhere.

Francisco moved to the chest trying desperately to drag it to safety but the assassins whom they knew only as Ronin were on the attack!

Santiago moved to intercept the Ronin moving toward his brother but was no match for this combat master. He went down clutching his pistols but slowed her down none the less.

Nino managed to blast off another shot wounding the second but the third made it to Papa Loco, wounding him and then pressing the attack to Nino.

Francisco fought hard to protect the chest but fell under the razor sharp blade of the stealth assassin. Her smile at the small victory was little more than a gash in her face and short lived as well.

Perdita, ever the picture of calm resolution advanced and shot with aim as sure as the sunrise. A sunrise the assassin would not live to see.

Papa Loco meanwhile went into suicide mode dropping stick after stick dealing scathing damage till he himself was taken down but not before he lit the last of his dynamite taking one of the Ronin with him.

Perdita had enough. The long distance impersonal kill feel of a bullet wouldn't do here, with arm outstretched the gunfighter feared throughout Malifaux put the gun to the head of the Ronin.

"Nobody blows up my Papa and lives!"

The assassin never heard the shot that took her head clean off the blood spray making it hard for Perdita to see.

"Sister!" Nino called out as he broke open the chest, "Nuthing but a bunch of pretty rocks... Make a nice paper weight but that's about it."

Perdita looked up at the blazing sun through the red in her eyes but felt no warmth.

"Blood on the sun," She said. "Just more blood on the sun..."

This was my second game. I used the Ortega box set vs The Victorias w/ totem and 3 Ronin. I had an absolute blast!
