  1. Depends on your finances.

Micro Art Studios and Dark Age Miniatures - Groundwerks both do nice scenic bases. Fiendish Fabrications also do some scenic bases not to mention the Malifaux inserts as well. All these options should give you an amazing potential range if you want to spend the coin and pin the figures.

If you want cheap and personalized bases...... I suggest buying about 30 plastic bases and then trolling hobby and hardware stores (art suppliers as well can be good) for a metric ton of potential basing mats then sit down for a weekend and experiment/practice until you have the trick of the style you are looking for so then you have it practiced for when you hit your people.

  2. 1/ Your first AP can be spent on any 1 AP action. Your second AP can then be spent on any 1 AP action. So you can 1 AP - walk and then 1 - AP walk with a model which has 2 general AP available.

Charge is a 2 AP action so you will use up both the AP a model has (assuming no special talent/rule/spell) in order to charge.

2/ The suit symbol on Ca Cb and Df which appears on some models is a bonus suit that model has useful for triggers of special abilities. It does not mean you can only use that suit, you can use any suit and you get a 'free' mask. So if defending with a Df 6:masks and you flipped a 8:tomes your net total would be 14 :masks:tomes which means you have 14 and a :masks:tomes for any potential triggers.

3/ Depends on the models Ht stat but yes I believe friends and foes can block LOS.

4/ The trigger comes into play when you are performing the action the trigger is associated with. So a Trigger (gun attack) will ding if you hit the suits when flipping on a gun attack, a trigger (defense) would ding if you flipped the appropriate suits on a defense flip and so on and so forth.

5/ Exactly correct. On an attack you add whatever positive twists you have (special abilities, focus, charging etc) and then subtract your negative twists (opponent specials, focus, duel result etc) the result is your net twist either positive, neutral or negative depending how the gods favor you. Note you cannot 'cheat fate' on a flip with a negative twist and if you ever flip the Black Joker you must play it.

I hope that helps and I submit to the Pullmyfinger crowd and other knowledgeable types on any mistakes I have made in my explanations above.

  3. There are a lot of people who have done this and forum posts where it has been discussed.

First stage is getting her interested in the single biggest difference between the games she is used to and a mini war game, the miniatures. You need to see if she is interested in any of the crews look (if you want you can concentrate on the 'easier' crews, again much advise on that available) but if she has previous gaming experience she should be able to process any crews to at least a playable level and the look if the key difference to getting her interested.

Approach her with your idea and show her some of the crews and mini's (either those you have already or if you'll buy her a box any you want) and see if any fire up and engage her imagination. Engage the imagination and you are 50% done.

Do you have a friend she also enjoys spending time with who she can play? It would be a good idea to have a neutral referee/adviser to allow the rules to be explained and the game to flow without the two direct players having to become involved in adjudication and rules searching.

    There are some thoughts.

    Good Luck

  4. Look up Ratty on this forum he does some excellent counter sheets, to be honest he does dozens of excellent little game aids, including corpse counters. The links are on his signature and he is involved in so many posts I reckon you look up any 5 and you will get him at least once.

If you have a few dollars then http://southpawart.bigcartel.com/pro...rror-token-set and Ravyn does some sweet looking very affordable counters. She is polite, easy to contact and her prices are excellent, I myself am waiting for mine to make it to the distant shore where I live but I hear the quality is superb from those lucky enough to already have them.

  5. On modelling. First the comments made above are all on the mark although amusingly as a near pure gamer I love the new sculpts dynamic yet not torture to assemble and play with.

Getting a super glue accelerator (good hobby shops should have it) which when placed on a mini will give near instant (but slightly more brittle) glue bond really helps. But remember it is near instant so know what you want to glue where and in what pose otherwise practice swearing as you pull bits apart.

For painting it will be a nightmare of mistakes and finished projects which simply look nothing like you have seen others do or you imagined. This is perfectly normal, when you start out you must remember that the mini's you see displayed are done by true professionals (often literally, they get paid) with much experience. Do not be disheartened and work at it, as a gamer I hate painting and it depresses me at times but I can after working at it get adequate quality figures on the table.

Here my important advise is find a good paint stripper as this can let the real disasters live again as it were. Get good brushes it may seem all brushes appear equal but trust me a good brush is vital spend a little extra and care for it well. Get good acrylic hobby paints and initially undercoat white and paint darker colors as this is much easier and will let you find your feet before trying harder things.

Finally their are lots of DVD's and painting guides out there, they are great and well worth the look. Ghool (I think it is) on this forum for example has some wonderful, helpful and simple little web blog education pages, if you have not already look him up.

    Good luck.

  6. I agree with the guys above.

From a purely need perspective the Essence of Power seems to pretty much define a no brainer ideal for 'Tina.

For adding some bring the hate hitting power, the Silent One is great.

I will add think about your student, what does he want, does he want a utility and always useful Essence of Power or does he want the much better looking mini, bring another damage model, which is the Silent One. It is a difficult situation my main suggestion would be don't ever do it again, taking money from students to buy them things seems loaded with risk to me.

  7. Melee beatstick Gremlin would be awesome and I think Ma Somer wielding a frying pan would be good laugh value and add both variety, a new facet and some utility.

I also like the idea of a sophisticated quasi Gremlin similar to the one from the old movie Gremlins 2. Have him take inspiration from Lucius, a gremlin in a 'tailored' suit jacket with a swagger stick and a collection on 'uniformed' and demented flunkies.

I also like the idea of bringing in a 'Gator or some alternative beast.

I think the fiction means it makes sense for the Gremlins to parasite and copy the guild crews who they perceive as the powerful leaders.

  8. For the most straight out flexibility;

    The Trapper

He is the cheapest with that long range, can deploy forward, reposition and in a pinch swing that fighting knife and not just expect to cut himself.

The December Acolyte is obviously an excellent choice but is not quite as pure a sniper and does not have as much applicability outside of Tina's crew.

Hans is the best total sniper available (Nino is the best full stop) but he is one dimensional.

Everything else is not really a sniper so I consider a half measure.

So the Trapper gets my vote for his all round multi list, multi purpose, mobile, long range killing goodness and sharp pointy knife.

  9. I say go for it, assuming you enjoy the tournament scene (which I myself do not so much regardless of system).

For part (1) First you won't know if you are going to be slaughtered till you try and even if you are it will be an excellent learning experience. Just important to be realistic in your expectations and not disheartened if you do get mangled.

For part (2) assuming you are a pleasant and good fun opponent and play fair while not gaming it or sulking then you will not ruin anyone's gaming experience. I would always, always rather a pleasant game than some hardcore competitive match against an opponent who is simply a pain to play.

Just the fact that you throw up the post is a good indicator that you are thinking of your potential opponents and their enjoyment. Go for it and if you do I wish you luck.

  10. Welcome to the game. Only new myself with a single scrap under my belt but so far the community has been solid, the game fun and the experience positive

I will say that it is a game with a sharp learning curve, the basic rules are very simple but with the sub rules that each model introduces it can get pretty....... tricky. Not at all a bad thing but its important I think not to be discouraged if you miss a few things and find yourself sweeping up your poor crushed crew. I was lucky, my first game was with a fellow rookie and observed over by a patient local henchman, great time had by all.

  11. This is superb work.

50% inspiring as I plan to put some work into my own chorus line as my first and primary crew.

50% depressing because I think on my best day I am about half as good as Mademoiselle Tuesday, which I guess makes me a dubious late Monday night.....

Still m'lady something to aspire to, I want pictures of the whole gorgeous crew....

  12. Not going to be waiting for this to make its slow crawl on to TV down under, this will be downloaded as soon as I hunt down the episodes. I'll be buying it on BluRay more than likely unless it totally underwhelms my expectations.

I loved the books, the fact he freely kills characters really does keep it on a razor edge as well. My big problem is the aeons between books, god knows when it will ever end.

Still reading is a matter of extreme taste, I'd sooner extract teeth than read either Harry Potter or the Twilight books but I have no end of respect for both authors in getting people to read at all. My basic rule of thumb is to pretty much never recommend a book to anyone, ever, at anytime.

  13. Good steampunk models are hard to find, I mean the biggest and best range is Malifaux so outside of that its tough. I have yet to hunt down a nice steampunk style 30mm male gentry type figure, I have found some nice performer figures but that won't help.....

As for Mannequins, I got nothing.

But the Coryphee might work nicely and could be worth a try. The other option is to hit up some of the first class miniature painter/converters if you want to spend the money for something special their are some people who will sculpt and create the torso image currently resting in your imagination. I'd try Coryphee first.

  14. Ah the cycle of forums.

The girl friend in question is Barby007 unless their are two couples out there with similar armies and type color/font styles. Anyway welcome you both to the game.

I have limited experience but the forums generally mark Marcus as the toughest Arcanist Master to play effectively, that is not to say he is not worth persevering with and look at Rathnard and his post on discovering Marcus, that is a positive place to begin.

As to a second Master, I'd look at Rasputina as she has some minions which cross over with Marcus or even go outside Arcanist to another Master who tends to run beasts, this will give you maximum cross over and future utility with Marcus. Rasputina is also about as much of a blunt instrument Master as Arcanist seems to get, we don't really have a melee or ranged monster but 'Tina and her spells are pretty much point and slaughter, much simpler concept to play with and conquer.

Ramos is a support caster, make a mistake with him and he is dead and you need to maximise his minions effectively. Collette is powerful but her gang is built on speed and is not durable and she is not a killing caster herself, she increases her chorus lines durability and effectiveness.

If you really are stumped with Marcus and frustrated then yeah change. If you want a nice obvious easy to understand Arcanist Master take the Ice Bitch. Alternatively if you want the robo factory, Ramos or the ultimate hit and run caster Collette. In the other factions I have less knowledge but the Ortegas are reputed to be nicely themed with a simple, obvious and effective play style.

Good Luck and I'd PM Rathnard and/or MadArc and beg for a little more precise tutoring tell them (or all of us) what you are having problems with, how is Pandora carving you up, what sort of games and so forth. Have you played others? Maybe Miss Barby (assuming I guessed right) is just a Malifaux protege??

  15. Hey there.

Well professional painting services and painters are pretty common, you might want to throw up what you are thinking of paying for the work to narrow it down, I've seen chain paint Asian and African workshops that do adequate work for about 3-4 dollars a mini, I've talked to painters where the top end work on a 30mm figure is about $100-200, but my god the work is so beautiful you'll be embarrassed to play it on a table not crafted of gold.

But I will say this, don't quit trying either. I hate painting, I am at best a generous average. However, I have kept trying and I can produce stuff at around a simple 13 year old level now, I am so proud of them.

I do have an army professionally painted, it was special to me for various reasons and I wanted it to look as special as it was so got a commission job done, very pleased. But again I still paint most of my own stuff.

So my 10 cents worth is look through the figures find the Master you really love (hopefully the one above) get a good sized gang for them and commission a painter. Then buy some other figures to play on other days and for days you want a change and give them a go to paint, if possible ask someone whose painting you admire and get advise, including about paint strippers, you will need them.

Eventually you will be able to field a small force you painted and not be an embarrassment, also remember that whatever you get painted Malifaux may add to the force - which means more mini's to paint - also wear tear and the dreaded clumsy drop may result in paint work damage. At least developing your paint skills a little gives you a chance to touch up your prettily painted commissioned work.

This advice may be for nothing but I hope you find a great and affordable painter and I hope you love the mini's and the games you play with them.

  16. Mate as a new Arcanist player I am glad you are championing the Marcus machine. I really like his whole wild beast druid schtick, I imagine his fluff is interesting (waiting on the book for that read) but I play Circle Oboros in PP genre for a reason.

I checked out the forums and online store and Arcanists simply had to be the primary faction I liked all the Masters then while deciding on my first..... Well who would not want Collette to be their first, she is so saucy and oh the things I hope to learn. But Marcus despite the cool models and appealing background I am avoiding because the forums hammer him.

I will be watching this thread with interest, you may just inspire me to pick up Wyrd's psychotic PETA representative earlier than I'd planned.

  17. I am sure this is an obvious question that has been answered in many places I have not yet looked.

I am waiting (in the next couple of days I hope) for my first mini's to arrive for purchase at the LGS. I have seen the V1 and V2 cards mentioned numerous times.

    So two main questions:

    1. I am hoping that all the new mini packs (box or clam shell) have the V2 cards packed regardless of newer release or older release mini's. Would this be true?
    2. Is there a way to tell apart the V1 cards from the V2 without going online to compare them? I could always stumble on an old pack containing old cards..

I guess while I am asking I will also check if I get old cards can I still redeem them for new ones by sending them somewhere?? I can look up where but wondering if this still is an available service?

Hopefully the older gangs I grab (Ramos is next I think, my first order is Collette) will have V2 cards, assuming they are packed so.

Thank you people, may the dice or card gods bless thee all

  18. I tell you guys regardless of whether this helps others in playing the Corphyees I am loving this post as a side tactica for what I should be wary of when I field the Fashionator Duo.

I was thinking at 14ss for the pair in any game smaller than 35 they would be to rich, the more I read the more I realise I am both right and wrong. Essentially only the Masters seem to have the solid kill percentages and techniques unless I really head butt the gaming table: however if I let a master get a good drop; or do mess up; or get them trapped - gone is a massive chunk of points, intimidation (never to be underestimated) and strike power gone.

They are the poison chalice, massively expensive and deservedly deadly but it strikes me that the primary problem the opponents of this posts thread have is the intimidation factor. They have hit the table danced a whirlwind of death while gracefully avoiding harm and now their opponents virtually throw up the cards in defeat when they see them across the board. It's not how to beat them I think but more if you have already decided that they have beaten you.

    Am I wrong?

  19. Hey folks.

Well waiting on some Showgirl miniatures and while I made the order I trolled the various minature companies to see if I could find some alternative performer figures (because it is all about not wearing the same outfit, that ladies is simply vulgar).

Now I have (hopefully, if they look OK and make scale) 4 or 5 different Performer mini's (including the basic 2). My problem is the Mannequins, I have found no alternatives for them, I have bought the Hollow Waif's and hope butchering them and head swapping/crafting will create a lovely wooden duet.... But is there a way to buy Mannequins without Performers (they are after all pretty much all the same so no variety really needed) or has someone found some suitably awesome alternatives any where??

Game well people, it makes life warm and fuzzy,
