  1. Lately I've been working on strengthening a number of hobby-related problems I've had for far too long.

    1. Pinning- I've never really pinned my models before. I usually just relied on enough superglue, greenstuff, and enough spilled beer to stick everything together. The other weekend I picked up the basic pinning kit from GF9 and some smaller bits from our LGS, and I've just been going crazy with pinning together all these models I was too afraid to touch. So far I've pinned the entire Hoffman crew, a Peacekeeper, my Terror Tots, some Young Nephilim, a Steamborg, and Lilittu. I can't believe I've gone so long without doing this.

    2. Basing- For the most part, my bases are always sand + static grass. Seeing all the various bases at Walpurgis really helped inspire me, so I'm fiddling around with various ideas for basing each of my factions. Right now I've been working on my Gremlins, aiming for a swampy theme. So far I've started work on a mosquito, though I'm thinking the tree might be a bit too distracting.

    3. Terrain- I'm slowly starting work on a bayou themed board. I'll post more on this later.

    4. Painting- Nah.

  2. Looking back, I definitely would not have taken the Steampunk Abominations with the initial 50 SS. While I did summon many of them throughout the tournament, I think I only brought a single one to a single game. In the future, I think 1-2 Canine Remains and a Hooded Rider would give me far more bang for my buck. The only perk of the SPA was being able to get a corpse/scrap counter, but the CR would give me the corpse counter for fewer points, and using the SPA for a scrap counter would be pointless.

  3. So after a long weekend of gaming at the Walpurgis 2-day GT in Bellingham Washington, I'm finally getting around to writing up a battle report! It's the first GT the Warhamsters have hosted in Bellingham, and JMGraham did an utterly astounding job organizing and running the event. For a thirty dollar entry fee, each player got a swag bag that included corpse and scrap counters, objective markers, a customized Warhamster Malifaux card deck, strategy counters, and a resin cast of the Tillinghast Beastie. The event sold out to twenty amazing gamers from Canada, Washington, and Oregon.

The tournament saw each player choose a master as well as 50SS worth of models to have available in each game. I opted for Leveticus and the following models-

    Leveticus

    Rusty Alyce

JACK DAW (His name was always yelled throughout the weekend)

    Bete Noire

    4 Abominations

    2 Rotten Belles

    Crooked Man

Friday night a bunch of us got together for dinner in town, and followed it up with a rousing game of Battlestar Galactica. I started the game playing Tyrol and as a Cylon, but laid low for the first half of the game until a good opportunity popped up. This happened at the beginning of the second round, and the Cylons were putting a lot of pressure on the humans before we had to stop due to time constraints.

    Saturday-

My first game saw me facing Darren/Distaff, one of the dirty Canadians, who was playing Collette. Since I needed to protect liberty and freedom and whatnot, I knew to bring my A game. The first round was set at 25SS, so I chose Bete Noire, Jack Daw, a Crooked Man, and a Belle. He brought Cassandra, 2 Coryphee, and... that actually might have been it. With our incredibly small crews, we danced around for quite some time, before Jack Daw started working his magic and severing ties, allowing Bete Noir and Leveticus to do some damage. The game ended with Leve, Jack, and Bete still alive, facing off against a very worried Collette. I got 5VP to his (3?), missing out on two from Eye for an Eye. It was a massive last turn, with Bete and Jack killing Cassandra, the Coryphee, and a bird. I have no idea what the strategy was, so I'll check and edit later.

Game two was against Riley, another Canadian, who was playing Ramos. I took Leveticus' special scheme and kill protege on the Steamborg, while Riley took grudge on someone and bodyguard. The strategy was shared suppy wagon. We pretty much stood off for most of the game. Leveticus jumped forward and killed the Steamborg, he jumped up and killed Leveticus (for a turn). The next turn would be similar, with me killing spiders or wounding the Coryphee, and them him moving back a bit. Time ended up being called on us, with me getting 5 VP and him getting 2.

Round three had me facing Ryan and his nasty Sonnia crew. I hate Sonnia, and Ryan really knows how to run her. The game was 45SS, with the strategy putting 4 markers on the center line. Models in B2B could do a (1) interact to get clue marker. 1-6 saw nothing happen, 7-9 gave a + to the next flip, 11-13 gave 1 clue marker, red joker gave 2, black took away 1. 2VPs for getting at least 3, and a further +2 for having the most. I brought everything except for 3 abominations. He brought Samael, 2 Witchlings, 2-3 Death Marshals, 2 Guild Hounds, and a couple other fellas. I chose grudge on a hound and frame for murder on the crooked man. The table had a special feature which saw us flip at the end of each turn. On a 10+ all casting and strikes received a (-).

I got spanked. The special feature ended up happening on 5 of the 7 turns, and my models were dying left and right. This also began my cursed hand, where my hand of cards drawn saw 10 being the highest card for three games. The game ended with me getting 2-3 VPs, with him getting 6+. In all honesty, there wasn't a whole lot I could have done here. His crew was far more mobile than mine, and between Sonnia and the special feature, I had one hell of a time doing anything with magic.

Game 4 had me going against TPenska, my arch nemesis with a hot mom. He was playing Rasputina. The strategy was Into the Breach, with a 3x3 special feature in the center of the board. Models completely within the feature could take a (2) action to enter the breach for the entirety of the game, and the first model from each faction could do it with a (1) action. I made a massive mistake here and read the rules wrong, believing models in the breach would still count as being in play, whereas they actually counted as being in play at the end of the game. The game size was probably around 35SS. Tony brought Raspy, a totem, Mechanical Rider, Silent One, Gamin, and a Mole Man. I brought 2 Belles, a Crooked Man, JACK DAW, and maybe Alyce. I chose Breakthrough and Plant Evidence, he chose Hold Out and..something else. The game started fast when Tony ran the Mech Rider straight up and entered the Breach. The next few turns saw 'Tina wrecking havoc on my crew, blocking off Leve with pillars and wiping the belles and crooked man out with magic. The final turn saw my big mistake. With no models in the breach, I decided to send Leveticus through. I believed he was still "in play", so did not draw my maximum hand size. The final turn saw me with 5 cards and 1 SS. Rasputina won initiative and laid in to Jack Daw, managing through Overpower to put Decembers Curse successfully onto Jack Daw seven times with her three APs (casting expert). The very last action, with didn't activate the trigger, was enough to finish off Jack. Had I paid enough attention to the strategy, Jack would have been safe. This was a huge swing, as Jack had killed a model, and was in place to give me plant evidence, breakthrough, AND prevent hold out. Game ended with Tony getting 8 points (4 for strat, 1 for JD, 2 for Hold Out, and 1 for something else) and me with 0. Ouch.

Saturday night we all went out for burgers, and then came back for some pickup games. I first played Jay and his Perdita crew, with Jack, Bete, and Leveticus putting some hurt on the Ortegas in the final turns. We then played Zombie Munchkin, which is excellent, and had me eventually win through shifty tactics and an epic beard.

    Sunday!

My fourth game was against Nathan and his Victoria's crew. The strategy was Shared Reconnoiter. He chose Kill Protege on JD and Grudge on Alyce, while I chose Assassinate on the Vikkies and and steal relic. This game had a slow start, with the Vikkies expanding across the board, while Leveticus had everyone bunched up and smacked anyone who got too close. The game really took off in the later turns, with the paired Vikky jumping out and killing a Belle, Abomination, and the Crooked Man, being being felled by Leveticus. The final laugh went to me, however, as Leveticus turned her into an Abomination. On the bottom of the last turn I was torn between having Jack kill a maimed model to get 1 VP, or to play it safe and keep the table quarter (if a Black Joker came up). I played it safe, which was a great idea, as the top card turned out to be the black joker!

The final game was against Chris and the Ortegas, with Treasure Hunt being the strategy. As the tournament limited schemes to one-use only, I ended up with exterminate on the Ortegas and Bodyguard on Leveticus. We smacked eachother around for most of the game while Franscisco made off with the treasure. The highlights were definitely Alyce headshotting Perdita on the final turn, and Jack eventually killing Nino in melee. Chris got 6+VP, while I got 3.

Finished the tournament with 19 VPs, and best in faction. Nathan won best looking (sexy and nicely painted!), and Ryan won overall. I'm stoked for next year!

  4. Papa Loco is awesome against Kirai, as seishin are usually packed really close together and one of his explosive abilities is a spell, so the damage is magical and will kill the spirits. When my opponent realized this he used a hanged to terrify his own master so she and the seishin would retreat away from Loco. Alas, it worked well and he only killed two of the four, but it was awesome.

Just for future reference, only living models test for terrifying. The Seishin would have stuck around, and possibly Kirai if she was a spirit at the time.

  5. My wallet is definitely suffering. I recently made the decision to go all-out and collect the entire Malifaux range, acting as the unofficial "Malifaux Librarian" for our gaming club. I'm getting pretty close, and it'll be fairly easy to keep up with monthly releases once I get there. Working on a list of what I have and do not have right now... Looking back, this post almost deserves a copy/paste into the embarrassment amnesty thread.
