  1. No worries Svenn, you just have to make it down for the next one. I know we had 2 of our regulars who ended up working at the store that day, so they ended up switching off on the ringer army (which came in second by points.. ugh). We also had 1 wedding and 2 "girlfriend kidnapped me" events that removed at least 3 others. I am starting to plan the next couple events (a league/campaign and another tournament) so keep an eye out!
  2. for those not following the other thread, an update post tournament. Tournament was very successful, with 9 players showing up to play 4 games. All told, the players made out with everyone walking away with a painted and based Wagon Marker, Best overall received a custom Graveyard terrain piece, a set of poker-chips for markers, and $25 in store credit. Tactics, Players Choice, and Sports each received $15 in store credit plus a set of poker chip markers. Overall stats on for the day below: Both Perdita (using the starter box) and Levi had a very strong showing. I was very happy to see only 1 Master was duplicated through the day. I would have liked to see Ressers or Neverborn, but I know our local players were otherwise engaged and not able to make it out. Let me know if there are any questions!

  9. Technically you can register on the day, but pre-registration is always welcome. you can pre-register via paypal and a quick PM or email to me. Currently we have a soft confirmation of 5, but I expect that will jump up by the end of this week. I am pulling together boards for up to 20 players, with an expectation of ~10.
  10. Not far at all. If you can come across Whites Ferry its about 20 minutes from the VA side. If your coming in from 270/495 its about 30 minutes up rt 7 from the 495/270 split. We also have regular Malifaux gaming on Tuesday nights at the same location.
  11. Updated the Player Pack, download the updated copy at the earlier link. Quick updates here: - Changed Wagon hardness in scenario 1 to Hardness 2. - Review and Update tournament errata Still plenty of room to sign up, so pre-register and let us know your coming. The boards are being built and this is shaping up to be a great event!!!
  12. I like the idea of tracking vp for pairings during each round, but I agree that Malifaux should play quick enough that store tournaments could use win/loss for final winner. Elimination bracketing allows a 4 round tournament to bring a group of 16 players down to 1 winner. I added in an overall prize that includes both sportsmanship and painting, along with 3 other prize categories. Its in my players pack.
  13. I agree @deadboy..... but it seems at least in my local area the 40K immigrants to Malifaux are captured quicker by the "tournaments" than by leagues. My guess is it has to do with people feeling its tough to join escalation leagues when they are already underway. tournaments tend to be a 1 day affair that are repeated, so "easier" to prepare for. people are funny......
  14. Or the point of running a tournament could be to bring new players into the game, create a spectacle of a full day of Malifaux gaming, and provide a structured and understood way to give reward players a t the end of that day. When thats the case, I tend to agree with a fair amount of the sentiment in this thread. I can say that some of the feedback I have already recieved (as an upcoming TO) was that people shied away from Malifaux because they are uncomfortable with the idea of "he/she who has bought the most has a clear advantage in the game". Making the game friendlier to new players and building up to a stronger community of gamers is the biggest motivation to the tournament I am running in October. I think putting together a Malifaux tournament takes a fair amount of planning, as there are several things in the game system that are different/innovative compared to wider spread games. For tournaments with a fair number of newer players, I think limiting the soul-stone limit to ~25 (a recommendation from these boards) and limiting the strategies and schemes makes a lot of sense. Fixed strategies can really off-set the largest challenges of a fixed list (not just fixed master or faction). Limiting to 1 scheme provides the mechanic of using schemes to offset/augment the strategies while still keeping things fairly simple for newer players. As the community evolves (take my local community for example) I expect future tournaments will advance in a couple ways. I am confident that we will include multiple schemes and larger crew limits in the future, aiming at the 30 or 35 SS crews as a goal. I can forsee fixed strategies being used, as once tournaments become very competitive there could be cries of "easy" strategies for the winners if random strategies are used. I think fixed shared strategies on each round really enhance the competitive nature, as long as those strategies are announced prior to the tournament. Related to picking faction, picking master, picking crew per game, that is still to be seen. I know the game is set-up for picking your faction prior to the strategy, then the crew (including master) after the strategy. I believe the Gencon tournament illustrates Wyrds intention (pick 1 faction for the tournament) which I am confident will be the most common way to run a tournament. Overall, I do believe that picking your crew and master each round of a tournament leads to being able to "buy your way" to a win, which I do not personally like. Just my thoughts.
  15. I am not sure how helpful the Astringer will be for you. Perdita can already bend bullets to get at hiding models you ca replicate the extra range from the Austringer with other family models that will compliment an Ortega Alpha strike.

  17. I believe its on display between 5 and 6.
  18. Huzzah Hobbies in Ashburn VA is having a Malifaux painting contest this upcoming Tuesday, August 31. Bring in your best painted crew of 5 models for competition against other players crews. Judging will occur between 5pm and 6pm. There will be 2 categories (Intermediate and Expert), and prizes provided. Hope to see lots of folk there!! Here is a quote from Chris@Huzzah
  19. @Nilus & Monkey, The feedback is very helpful, thank you! I see the point regarding new players, and I think 25 points would make sense to drop down to. With fixed/announced missions before hand, the flexibility may not be as necessary. @powersoxette, Great questions. Terrain would be set before hand by the TO, not the players. Fixed tables and terrain, with tables being as approximately equal as possible. For proxy, I would say proxy would be available although I am going for fully painted crews.
  20. Howdy all your Wyrd folk out there.... thank you for looking at this thread. I appreciate any help or suggestions you can offer. So, the basics.... I am looking at organizing a Malifaux tournament in my area. There are a small number of experienced players and a large number of new players who would be interested in joining (i.e. 3-4 experienced vs 12+ new). Here are a couple of my thoughts: - I am looking for something accessible to new players. The goal would be either 25 or 30 soul stones playable. - I do not want to use the rule-book system of pick crew after you know your opponent/strategy as I believe this gives an unfair advantage to "He who has bought and painted the most models". - I like the idea of a single Master for the day as this forces you to deal with the strengths/weaknesses of your master. - I am going back and forth between having people bring 2 lists vs building a 40 SS list and selecting a 30SS crew for each game. Both of these provide some flexibility to deal with Rock/Paper/Scissors match ups along with different strategies. Basically, here is the format I am leaning toward: 3 Round Tournament Fixed Shared Strategy per round Round 1 - Supply Wagon Round 2 - Claim Jump Round 3 - Slaughter [*]Schemes Must pick 1 general and 1 specific scheme per game No scheme can be repeated [*]Bring 2 lists Must keep same master for both lists No henchman as masters 30 SS per list [*]Time limit per game - 90 minutes Questions: - Doing schemes the way I have means the faction/master specific schemes will all get used through the day. Is there anything unbalanced here? - For list construction, any suggestions on the one listed above vs the following: Lists will be created as follows: All players pick 1 Master No henchman as masters All players bring 40SS of models Each round players pick a 30SS list - Time per round, is 90 minutes enough time per round? Thanks in advance for comments/critique/help.
  21. I will be out at the store, aiming for 5pm. I am hoping to bring my wife with me as well and actually get her to play.
  22. Huzzah is about 17 miles from the Vienna station. It's about a 30 min drive unfortuneately.
  23. Overall a very successful kick-off night! We had a fairly consistent 6 games going through the night. I was able to get 2 games in myself, which was great. In addition, we picked up a number of new players. I anticipate a strong showing moving forward. Bill
