  1. Talking of GW terrain, I also like the GW plastic forest. The trees are appropriately gnarled and twisted and they have the advantage of being individually removable from their large plate-like base (to use as a Hanging Tree, etc.). Note that I don't bother with their silly flat foliage pieces, I think then look best with bare branches.

The Warhammer plastic buildings (Watch Tower, House, etc.) are also passable for Malifaux, although perhaps a little too medieval-looking.

  2. Please pardon the threadomancy, but since I happened to be working on a Viktoria Swordmistress figure recently, I thought it might be helpful to post some WIP photos. Here is a long shot of the complete figure from the front:

Here is a closeup of both wrists from the front:

In practice, I pinned both wrists and superglued them, then enhanced her wrist armor with a small amount of green stuff to strengthen the joints. As many folk do, I also anchored the hilts of her blades to her buttocks for extra support. The smudge of red on her right buttock in the photograph is superglue. (I introduce a coloring agent into my superglue to thicken it, and so I can see where it is going better). I also pinned her bundled swords to her back as well.

She is very difficult to assemble. The surface area for pins on her wrists and hands is maddeningly small. You'll note that I had to re-sculpt the palm of her right hand with green stuff because the pin broke through into the hand. When I attached her swords, my primary concern was that she appear to be holding her wrists at a natural angle. While I achieved this, it did result in her holding her swords in a rather asymmetrical manner. In a perfect world, I would re-master the figure as a single-piece casting, with her swords attached at the wrist and held symmetrically.

  3. I was planning on making some winter-themed terrain for the Cult of December anyway, so I'm not unhappy keeping the AT-43 bases intact. The fire elemental is the wrong shape to straddle two 50mm bases, so he's out (still an interesting model, though).

I have seen some Ice Elemental figures on eBay with a fairly wide stance that might be able to straddle two bases, but I would be taking pot luck again on scale (Stupid move x3!).

For flame bases, I think I will try to go with Malebolgia's original suggestions. For Ice Pillars, I may try to monkey around with some quartz crystals (like some of the bases shown elsewhere here on the forum). GF9 seems like a simple solution, but they're a little too abstract for me.

  4. I was browsing around through the Miniature Matters section, looking for inspiration on constructing some of the various counters needed for the game and I happened on this thread:

Following the sage advice of Malebolgia, I decided to pick up a couple of clear resin Fire Elementals to use for Sonnia Criid's Wall of Flame spell. I decided that I wanted a more anthropomorphic representation than the large Fire Elementals shown in Malebolgia's post, so I picked up this huge Fire Elemental on eBay:

Unfortunately, when it arrived it was far too large for a 50mm base (lucky I only bought one...!)

At the same time, I wanted a representation of Rasputina's Ice Pillars spell, so I picked up these Elysian Crystals from the defunct Rackham AT-43 range:

    IMG_0004.jpg

Of course, when they arrived, they were also far too large:

I actually don't mind having the Elysian Crystal pieces, as they make nice Ice-themed terrain anyway...

Let this be a lesson to everyone: Check the scale on stuff before you buy it!

  5. Pardon my stupididity (sic), but I'm having problems with the Malifaux chronicles links. Volume 1 is fine, but when I try to see volume 2, all I get is blank white pages and volume 3 shows dark grey text on a black background that is essentially unreadable (and no illustrations). I also have the same problem with the Holiday Scenarios link.

Have Volumes 2 & 3 been taken down for adjustment or am I somehow doing something wrong? Is there some way to adjust the image view on Volume 3 and the Holidays scenarios to get a black text on a white background?

  6. Can anyone take a minute to tell me what happened in the movies and such since the last season finale? I haven't kept up, unfortunately. :(

    WARNING! Spoiler alert!

    Bender's Big Score:

A race of alien scammers take over the earth by defrauding everyone on the planet. Fry is revealed to have the secret to time travel tattooed on his ass and a ridiculously convoluted time travel plot ensues.

The Beast With A Billion Backs:

Everyone in our universe becomes romantically involved with the sole denizen of a neighboring universe, a huge multi-tentacled entity named Yevo. Fry become the pope of a religion worshipping Yevo and eventually, all sentient life in our universe migrates to Yevo's dimension to be with him/her (leaving the robots behind). Bender misses Fry, so the robots invade Yevo's home dimension to bring Fry and the other sentients back.

    Bender's Game:

The Planet Express crew become embroiled in a race with Mom for control of all the dark matter in the universe, winding up in an alternate dimension based on fantasy roleplaying games. In the end, the physics supporting dark matter's use as star ship fuel change, so new sources of energy must be found.

    Into The Wild Green Yonder:

Leela becomes involved with a group of female environmental activists who oppose Leo Wong's plan to destroy a rare star as part of a cosmic miniature golf course, leading to a schism between the male and female members of the Planet Express family. In the end, Leela admits that she loves Fry and the crew blast off to adventure.

The Beast With A Billion Backs is far and away the best of the four direct-to-DVD movies (the others suffer disproportionately from the fact that they were made to be chopped up and shown as TV episodes).

While Leela finally admits that she returns Fry's love at the end of the 4th film, that's no guarantee that they will be considered a couple in the returning series.
