  1. Thanks for the suggestions. The Reaper model has a LOT in common with Seamus, doesn't he? Replace the knife with a gun and you're in the same bleachers of the same ballpark. The Chirugeon Barber is definitely creepy. His face is odd, but that's what makes him "not quite right."

Could you avoid the Lucky Charms feel by going with a different, darker color scheme? Or is there something inherent in the sculpt, e.g. the face and the smile?

I saw a pic of a Seamus done in muted earth tones just the other day, with pinstripes on his pants and hat. It did take the edge off a little bit. I love a model with a sense of humor but he crosses a line between funny/creepy and Saturday morning cartoon-ish. The proportions of his outfit, tiny waist, platform shoes, massive hat, the laughably huge blade on the gun, I dunno.

There I things I definitely like about the model, don't get me wrong. You mentioned his face, which is great. His grin is a keeper.

I must admit I love the Seamus sculpt... I think the fact that he is so clean and unmarred makes him terrifying amongst a bunch of dirty so and so's....

Understandable, though I find him too exaggerated moreso than too un-Res(?), compared not only to his own faction but to the entire line of Malifaux minis. Like I said, I'll have the model in hand when I pick up the Redchappel Gang. Maybe my opinion will change when I start considering color scheme/basing possibilities. If he does get painted, it'll definitely be in muted tones to avoid highlighting his cartoon-ish quality ... though I'd likely include a real nice shock of screaming red on him somewhere. Red and light browns, hmm.

One thing is for certain: the blade on the gun is coming off. Simple snip and file job, maybe a little greenstuff cleanup. That'll remove one cartoon exaggeration, reduce the height. Combine that with a muted color scheme ...?

Though he's definitely my least favorite Res miniature, Seamus is still a Wyrd miniature; which means it's hard to replace him. Finding a proxy that looks good on a table next to Wyrd models is a tough ask.

    Thanks again!

  2. Does anyone know of mini that would stand as a decent Seamus proxy?

I intend to buy the Redchappel Gang for Sybelle and the Belles (basically scoring Seamus for free or damn close). I'll have the goofy bastard on hand if I absolutely need to use the model in a tourney situation or something, but I'd otherwise prefer to keep Magically Delicious on the sideline. Hit the showers, Hatter!

I love his fluff and his stat card makes me smile, but the mini doesn't work for me. He sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of the Resurrectionist line ... which was probably the point ... which I can appreciate. That said, the psychotic Leprechaun (compounded exponentially by Copycat Killer) + Mad Hatter motif doesn't fly in my eyes. I'd prefer Jack the Ripper + Bill "The Butcher" Cutting, if forced to be specific. He's supposed to be the scariest dude on two legs, but all I want is his Lucky Charms. In a totally platonic sort of way.

I realize it's his reputation that's meant to be Terrifying, what with all the mutilated corpses left in his wake, but I simply can't come to terms with it.

It's about the only model in the Res line I can't bring myself to field. Though I'm not a massive fan of the Flesh Construct, he'll be in the mix, poop-eating grin and all. Beyond that, I adore the entire decaying mess. I sincerely hope Wyrd will forgive me for this one transgression. :notworthy

So anyway. Proxy. Can anyone think of a mini that would suit? I'm not afraid of a little greenstuff and some relatively simple conversion, but I'm no artist. Any thoughts?

  3. Online shops will kill the LGS. I'm not bitter anymore - it's just a reality of the times. Even I like to save a buck. If you continue to support your LGS, keep in mind that it's not a business the owner is getting rich on, and that chances are, the owner barely makes a living wage. Appreciate them while you can.

I do. And I sympathize. I've owned my own business going on 11 years and it's a difficult lifestyle at the best of times, especially with online retailers able to operate for a song, allowing them to undercut brick and mortar establishments (thankfully, not a reality in my line of work).

The owner of the store I frequent makes it clear that he doesn't earn a living off the merchandise he moves. He pays the rent with it, at best. He feeds his family and gases up his car thanks to commission paint jobs and casting his own minis. He does it because he loves it, not because he's living the high life. We players connect the dots. If he doesn't move minis, he doesn't pay rent. If he doesn't pay rent, the store closes and we're back to playing on kitchen tables using empty milk cartons and encyclopedias for terrain. Worse still, we lose our place to play and the community therein.

Not something I'm willing to sacrifice, personally.

  4. I recommend some Rotten Belles, too. They're one of the best (and most underpriced) Resser models, and they're very good with McM. I'm thinking about bringing three of them in 30 points with Sebastian, the Gunslinger and a pair of dogs.

Oh my, you can bet. The Belles are on my short list. Not only are they pleasing from a stat card standpoint, they happen to be some of my favorite minis in the entirety of Malifaux.

  5. So long as a game store offers space to play, customers will keep coming back and buying from them out of a sense of loyalty, or even just simple convenience since they're already there.

Exactly. Personally, I'd feel odd showing up on a regular basis to play on a FLGS table knowing full well I didn't buy a single mini from the shop in question. Even worse, the owner would know ... and that would just be awkward. But that's just me and my overdeveloped sense of guilt.

  6. I recently purchased about $150 worth of Malifaux merchandise from my FLGS. I went online and discovered I'd save about $40 buying through online retailers. I brought the number to the owner of the shop and said, "Look, I'll save a bunch of money if I buy from this retailer in the UK but I'd rather give you the money and support the store. Is there anything you can do? I don't expect you to match dollar for dollar ..." Turns out he had no problem matching the price. Told me he's wasn't about to turn down money and he was happy to sell a bunch of minis for a game he's excited to see catching on.

Online retailers low-balling for 20-30% off MSRP w/ free shipping will be the eventual death of local game shops. There's no getting around it. You gotta support your FLGS, even if it means spending a little more (I was prepared to spend more, I got lucky).

Do you use their tables? Their terrain? Do you prefer having someone else organize events and tourneys? I enjoy having a place to congregate and play. Seems like a fair trade.

  7. Did anyone else play a PC game called Dungeon Keeper back in the day? I used to be an addict. During the course of the game, the player would create a horde of evil gribblies to protect their dank dungeon home from wandering heroes. These monsters would spawn from their specific lair with a randomized name. For whatever reason, two of the random names stuck with me long after Dungeon Keeper faded from memory. Boochof the Bile Demon and Sozoa the Vampire.

Now, I don't possess an affection for vampires. Quite the opposite, in fact. I've had quite enough of pasty face, pretty boy vampires with frosted tips mucking up today's pop culture. That said, the name stuck with me.

Turns out it's also a genus of moth. Who knew?

  8. I wish Wyrd would put out a few alternate sculpts for models such as the Flesh Construct or the Mature Nephilim... However, I would rather them release new models which don't have a model available first. :D

100% agreement. I would absolutely adore at least one additional Flesh Construct option since I'm bound to have several crashing around with McM running show. Variety is the spice of (un)life, after all. That said, I'd prefer Wyrd crank out minis for the models that lack a tabletop presence first and foremost. Gotta assume that's priority.

  9. I think the rim of the base is meant to compliment both the model and the terrain it stands on. As has been said, black goes with everything. Regardless of the model's color scheme, black looks good and doesn't detract. Whether it's standing on flock, stone, sand or red hot lava, black won't look out of place. Even if you've based your mini with snow and you're playing on a lush, green forest board, a black rim will smooth the transition between your basing and the table.

For instance, I painted the majority of my TK army with Desert Yellow base rims. It complimented the minis, which was nice. It looked great on desert boards, which was nice. But it looked odd on everything else, which was not so nice. I'd rather have "all the bases covered" (HA!), and black is the only color that does the job, in my experience.

  10. About their theme and flavor, I'm with you man. I once got a chance to choose a new guild master,.... ended up choosing good ol douglas mcmourning. The ressers have such an irresistible charm. Common or not, it's my favorite

There's just something about Doug, isn't there? I think it's his smile. :inlove:

8th Ed. Warhammer will have to be something pretty special to light my fire. On the other hand, Malifaux IS something pretty special, so GW is already well behind the curve. That's all I have to say about that.

@Nilus: Terrain seems to be a key factor in Malifaux and you can really pack it in on a 3x3 table. The demo board our LGS has set up is pretty good for that (he's currently working on a separate Victorian themed table).

Now that I've settled on a faction based largely on theme and mini appeal, I look forward to getting better acquainted with the tactical side of the Ressurectionists.

  11. You deploy your entire crew at once, so you really can't delay anything.

I have always wondered whether your opponent should know the faction you're playing when choosing their own crew though. Although to be honest I usually tell my opponent either my faction or even sometimes my master before we even flip for location.

Oh, cool. I guess that's the Warhammer in me talking.

My rulebook arrived yesterday! I should be up to speed soon enough.

Judging from the rules alone, it would appear faction/master details are meant to be kept a secret. I assume it's a moot point often enough, when your opponent is a known quantity and owns but a single crew.

  12. You announce schemes after deploying.

    Assuming the whole sequence:

    Choose size of game

    Choose terrain type

    Setup Terrain

Choose deployment type and identify deployment zones

    Choose Strategy

    Choose Schemes

    Hire Crews

    Choose deployment order and deploy

    Announce Schemes

    Play

Locally we tend to throw scenery at a table, either agree or randomly pick a scenario and get down to it.

So, officially, your choice of faction isn't technically announced until deployment, at which point you plop down your first mini. Even at that point you could place an Outcast. In effect you delay revealing your faction, potentially for two individual deployments (assuming two mercs and not an Outcast crew).

  13. Prior to hiring:

Is my opponent meant to know what my faction is?

Is my opponent meant to know my mission?

Is my opponent meant to know which schemes I intend to run, assuming I announce them?

All of the above would have a huge impact on deciding who is hired, which seems to be the point. You learn who you're up against and what they're attempting to do, you then build the best possible crew to counter AND complete you own objectives.

I imagine the actual hiring process would be done in secret.

  14. PS: VC, daemons & the 7th ed rule itself are the sole reason I quit WHFB.

I hear that. The recent announcement of 8th edition as a "New Beginning" on July 11, 2010 is the only thing that keeps me from permanently retiring my Chaos and TK armies to top of my dusty Shelving Unit of Shame. I can only assume GW has finally realized the full extent of the fail 7th edition hath wrought, not to mention the unapologetic nonsense inherent in several army books (VC and Daemons, specifically). Plus, War of the Ring is a much better game from a pure rules perspective. They'd better take some cues.

I can see ranged being a big deal in Malifaux, which is why I'm resigned to a world of pain considering my initial round of purchases (very few ranged options). I'll have to insist on a multitude of scenery and terrain, whenever possible. Even if I do get shredded, I love the Ressur theme and the minis too much to opt for anything else. I'll eventually pick up The Hanged, a Convict Gunslinger and several other ranged options to provide some much needed flexibility.

Nilus is right, of course. I'm not MARRIED to the Ressurectionist faction (though we are going steady). Chances are I'll dabble in Neverborn and even make a foray or two into Outcast territory (I really like the Leveticus sculpt). There's plenty of potential on the horizon ...

To stay on topic, so far I'm the only player expressing interest in being a Ressur. Neverborn stands to be pretty popular, as does The Guild.

  15. Congrats on the victory. I'll have access to every model in your winning crew with the exception of the Convict Gunslinger.

I went a little crazy and ended up ordering:

    McMourning box

    Nicodem box

    Canine Remains I & II

    Mindless Zombies

    Vulture

    Zombie Chihuahua

The Hanged and Convict Gunslinger are next on my must-have list. They'll provide some much needed range. Bete Noir won't be far behind, nor an additional Flesh Golem (proxy). More beatsticks, more love.

  16. Forum Handle: Hatchethead

City/Metro Area: Prince George, BC (Canada)

Game Shop (if you have one): Armoury Toys & Hobbies, Great White

    Preferred days/times: Very flexible (self-employed)

Other comments: Add one more to the Canadian contingent! I'm brand new to Malifaux with a buttload of Ressurectionist minis en route. We're doing our best to bring Malifaux to the masses here in northern British Columbia.

  17. This way you can play in a Brawl too. Win-win

True! Though I'll likely be the only guy in my FLGS with enough models to play a Brawl, at least at first.

Thankfully, enthusiasm is contagious. The owner, who intends to paint up the Vik box for in-store demo purposes (and personal use, I assume), has already gone crazy with Malifaux terrain. One dude is flip-flopping between Lilith and Pandora, another guy is all about the Lady J and her Marshals (and the Peacekeeper). Two of my Warhammer buddies have expressed interest. Then there's me, spearheading a relatively massive undead contingent. It's a good start.

  18. Is your real name Inigo Montoya? Sorry, I can't resist a "Princess Bride" connection. coat.

Ha! I almost titled the thread, "My Name is Sozoa. You Killed My Disposable Income. Prepare to Die."

Probably better this way. That would've have been a tad on the nose.:fight:

Thank you all for the warm welcome. Glad to be here! I'm only sorry it took me so long to realize y'all exist ...

  19. Ahhhhh, who am I kidding? I don't do anything piecemeal.

I'll order both the Nico and McM boxes. It'll be nice to have a pair of Masters to jump between for the sake of variety, not to mention a selection of minions to mix and match. I'll likely grab at least one blister of Canine Remains and some Mindless Zombies, as well.

    Go big or go home.

Thanks for the input, everyone! :bounce:
