  1. I think in the end you're just going to have to choose whether you want the models to look cohesive individually, or as a crew.

Personally, I'm going for individually. I think that having different bases for a crew will be less problematic than having models on inappropriate bases.

That was my first instinct, as well.

I'm bloody tempted to unchange my mind, if only to use the bitchin' broken tile bases for McMourning, Sebastian and his Nurses. I'd be back to basing the Masters, their "henchmen", totem, and any Master-specific minions in a cohesive fashion (Nico, his vultures, Mortimer and the mindless zombies on graveyard bases, for instance), while the rest of the non-crew-specific models would be on something that fits the faction as a whole, likely the Fenris Games flagstone in the case of my Rezzers.

The Outcasts? Too true. I've decided that my Outcasts will be based taking into account the mini's overall appearance, theme and fluff, including any relationship they may have to other models within their faction. Leveticus and Alyce would be based in a similar fashion, along with the Waifs. The Gremlins of course. Standalone models like the Convict Gunslinger, Hamelin and Killjoy will be based purely on what looks right for that specific mini.

    Decisions, decisions. :hmmmm:

  2. It's bananas. My buddy plays Ortegas and uses his simultaneous activation to great effect. The one thing you want to keep in mind is, it's not always ideal to activate the entire Family. If you want to combo attacks or otherwise have a specific plan that requires simultaneous action, the option is there. Beyond that, activating your entire crew at the same time allows your opponent to react at his leisure, knowing your only response until closing phase is likely to be a quick draw. It's also nice that the Ortegas must remain within 6" of each other to take advantage, it restricts their movement options somewhat ... or at least keeps Perdita on a chain.

  3. I think the Neverborn are the toughest to keep a unified faction basing scheme, because I think each crew has a particular territory. Forest-stuff works for Lilith and her crew, Zoraida just screams for swamps. Pandora I see as the terror of the city proper, those creepy not-quite-right figures you see at night.

Good point. The Neverborn are really hard to pin down, but I suppose the same could be said of all the factions. It's the exact issue I had with my Rez collection. I saw Nicodem in the graveyard, Seamus on cobblestone and McMourning in the sewer. With Arcanist crews, Marcus begs for outdoor/forest bases, Ramos on industrial, Tina of course requires snow. The Guild isn't too bad. For the most part, I can see the majority on dirt/wood plank bases.

DAMMIT now you've got me waffling again. With the exception of the Guild, it's difficult to argue for unified basing throughout an entire faction. I can come to terms with it for the Rez, but Neverborn and especially Arcanist are near impossible to justify. Putting Ramos in the snow or Rasputina on steampunk/factory bases ...?

    :club:

Awesome idea for Teddy, btw. That will look amazing.

  4. Haha. Thanks ;) I actually got that part. I mean that this is under the assumption that you know you're facing her and are building your crew around that.

Well, at this point I'm the only player with multiple crews to my name. Everyone in my group is running a single Master, if I come up against this particular player Lady J is a guarantee.

Granted, that won't always be the case, but at the moment I'm a dedicated Rez player. I might dabble with Leveticus at some point and definitely the new Book 2 Rez Master, either way my bringing undead to the table is a safe bet. Even if he does expand his collection to include other Masters, I'd likely err on the side of caution and assume Lady J more often than not. She's the natural born counter to my entire collection, after all.

Thanks for the tips and suggestions! McMourning it is. My Hanged will definitely be making an appearance, I'll also toy with Bete and Sybelle. Convict Gunslinger seems like a no-brainer. I wonder how Killjoy would fair? Far too expensive in a Scrap list alongside Bete, but another interesting possibility.

  5. Man I love those Dragon Forge trench bases. I actually have them earmarked for Guild should I ever make a foray into that particular faction. They are far and away the best "wood plank" bases, in my opinion.

Found some really nice industrial stuff should I ever dabble in Arcanist. Neverborn, with them being the natural predators of Malifaux I tend to see them on outdoor bases. There's an excellent "forest trail" set of resin bases I'd be inclined to purchase (can't recall which company produces them), very similar to the Wyrd Bayou stuff but less swampy.

My Outcasts will be a total mixed bag.

I've settled on consistent basing within each faction (Outcasts are the exception). I enjoy the idea of basing individual crews separately, but I'm far more comfortable with a faction-wide theme.

  6. I launched a sub forum specific search on this topic and found a few threads, but all were circa 2009. For the most part, the advice was "play defensively", "use whatever ranged attacks you can" and "don't go toe to toe" ... has this advice changed? Has the errata introduced anything new?

Our group is small but we already have one Lady J player. I'm the only Rezer at the moment, Lady J and her anti-Rez crew scare the poops out of me. I haven't had a chance to play against her yet but the clash is unavoidable. I'd appreciate advice! I'll be bringing either McMourning or Nicodem. Is one vastly superior to the other, versus Lady J?

  7. I guess I'm pretty lucky. Our large LGS (massive store, elite GW retailer etc.) has zero Malifaux in stock. The employees wouldn't know a Rotten Belle if it stabbed them in the mouth. If it's not Privateer Press or Games Workshop it's not on their radar. Thankfully, our FLGS (note the "F") is all about the Malifaux. The owner has at least two distributors who ship Wyrd stuff on a weekly basis. He has an entire wall section devoted to Malifaux and runs regular demos. So good. He's been moving Malifaux like crazy, and I've stopped asking about it at the big store.

  8. Thanks, good to know.

I've actually changed my tune, somewhat. I've flip flopped and now plan to base all of my Rezers on the flagstone, regardless of crew. In my mind each proper faction needs their own basing style (with one notable exception, see below) ... I thought I could ignore my sensibilities, but apparently not.

So I now have 15 30mm Wyrd bases and a couple 40mm inserts of varying styles en route, somewhere over the Atlantic. What to do? I think I'll use them for my Outcasts. The very nature of the faction suggests rag tag, and having all of my potential Outcasts on a wide variety of bases sits just fine with me. It's nice, actually. It'll differentiate the mercenaries from the main crew and give me a chance to paint something other than flagstone. I don't have 17 Outcasts to base, nor will I any time soon ... but that's fine. I'm happy to support Wyrd, and the bases will be here if and when I need them.

  9. May have found a winner. Got lucky and stumbled across Fenris Games on eBay. They have a selection of nice flagstone in 30/40/50mm. Trading messages with a rep to clarify a few things, fingers crossed.

    Chazza, cheers for the suggestion!

  10. Yeah, they are close. I really like the level of detail on the Dragon Forge, though. It fits well with the look and feel of Malifaux. Not too busy or hyper-realistic like the Ironhalo Keep, not overly cartoonish like the Base-ix Dungeon Stone. Hmm. I'd have to side with the Base-ix stuff if I were forced to choose. Malifaux does lean toward cartoon moreso than realism, obviously.

EDIT: I honestly hope the guys at Wyrd don't mind us discussing third party basing options on their forum. If this is bad form, please let me know. Sorry I didn't consider it sooner ...

  11. Well, I'm a big fan of variety. I don't like repetition if I can avoid it. What I'm now thinking of doing is using the Wyrd bases for the core units in each crew, the models that will almost certainly be included; such as Nicodem w/ Mortimer and his Mindless Zombies = the 5 graveyard bases. The entire Seamus box would look spanking on the Victorian inserts.

Beyond that, I'll likely put the non-specific models on a neutral base. Something that fits alongside all three of the Wyrd base packs and won't otherwise be too repetitive. Something like a dirt base with static grass or plain dungeon stonework. I'm afraid dirt w/ grass will look too graveyard-ish, so I'm leaning toward the Dungeon Stone from Back2Base-ix. Stylistically, I think it looks good alongside the Wyrd stuff. I totally dig the Iron Halo Keep base, but it really doesn't mesh as well with the Wyrd bases.

Those Kerr & King dockside bases are gorgeous. I might sit on those until I find a new Master worthy of their own basing scheme.

  12. it wont matter if it breaks because you say it isnt acceptable now?

Well, a broken sword would certainly be less acceptable than a banged up, slightly bent one. :P:

I continue to work on it, using friction and body heat as you've suggested, and it's getting better. Eventually I'll have to leave it be or risk a break. I can ultimately pass off the remaining imperfections as normal, citing the "rigors of undeath".

  13. It's the one on the far left. NOTE: These aren't my minis, I just Google'd an image of some Punk zeds.

The sword held upright is pretty banged up, though I've managed to massage it back into something resembling the intended position. My only concern now is the fragility of the blade. Pinning it ... it's possible, I suppose ... though chances are I'd hulk out and start spouting gibberish.

  14. I recently received a big ol' batch of Malifaux minis and for the most part, no problems! Love 'em. There were a few relatively minor issues with models being bent, but only one is mangled to the point where I'm having trouble re-positioning it.

One of my Punk Zombies, the sword came out of the Nicodem box looking like it had been twisted around a pencil. I've tried my best straighten it, but it's still "wavy" and gimped. The blade feels like it's ready to snap off the hilt and I hesitate to manhandle it (the more I try to fix it, the flimsier it gets). I fear for it's table survivability.

Can someone suggest a method to straighten the blade, maybe using weight or mild heat or something? I'd have no problem simply whacking it back into shape it I thought the sword could take it without breaking off (at which point it would be damn near impossible to re-attach). It's actually my favorite sculpt of the three and I really want to get it looking proper. Thanks!
