I had the good fortune of being introduced to Malifaux by a local retailer recently, and after several days of marveling at the miniatures and attempting to come to grips with the dice-less mechanic and the theme/playstyle of each faction, I find myself powerless to resist.
I'm now mired as I struggle to decide which faction to support. As a diehard horror movie devotee and an unapologetic zombie fanatic, the Ressurectionists leave a pleasant taste in my mouth, and the Neverborn are a cheery bunch I could definitely get cozy with. Looking at the online store, I don't think there's a single mini I'd avoid from the Ressurectionist line (and that's pretty impressive).
However ... why do I get the feeling that the Ressurectionists are the "OMG not ANOTHER Rez crew, are you serious?" faction? Am I way off base? Maybe I'm wrong. I've only been hip to Malifaux for a few days, after all; that's simply the impression that I get. Ultimately, I'll play whatever I want to play, but part of me also wants to be the guy who plays something somewhat unique, not just another dude at the back of the line with yet another undead crew.
I also realize it'll be different from town to town, group to group. My issue: Malifaux is brand spankin' new in my neck of the woods. It's just now starting to take root. No one owns a copy of the core book, let alone a playable crew (cheers to out-of-town rep who ran several in-store demos, harvesting a grim crop of would-be Malifaux hardcores). I *do* know that the Rotten Belles were hands down the favorite crew to be demoed. How could they not be? I mean, old-timey prostitute zombies w/ parasols and a fat, bald dominatrix madam?? What's NOT good about that?
I realize this is a subjective question with a million possible answers, but any input would be appreciated. To the point: If I were a prospective member of your Malifaux gaming group, would a new Resurrectionist struggle to find games against opponents otherwise sick to death of necromancers and their undead lackeys? Upon being introduced, should I expect to take part in this conversation ...?
