  1. Shades,

Taking another look at your models, and I can't get the thought of just shaving Cojo's arm spikes off and making the arms look natural out of my mind. I wonder....

I like that idea, Night'.  I wish I had thought of it when I started!  Maybe I'll do that for the Slate Ridge Mauler.

  2. From a compositional standpoint, I see what you were going for, but those lanterns aren't generally in the middle of a path, and, combined with how the OSL doesn't affect the dragon (which is just normally lit), I feel like it messes up an otherwise really nice piece.

Thanks for the feedback.  The practical point-of-view is certainly one I can remember for a future project!  As for this project (and most of my projects, actually), I just consider it an opportunity to practice skillz and experiment with new techniques.  It's just a gaming piece that I knocked out in 4 sessions or so, so as long as it looks cool on the tabletop, I'm cool with it!

If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't have started playing Malifaux, so it's always exciting to see new stuff you've painted for it!

Thanks, Aaron!  I'm really excited for you and your new gig.  Talk about a dream come true, dude!

Whenever you guys are ready to develop a fantasy/historical mass-combat game, I can dust off Mini Mayhem.  ;) Amazingly enough, there still remain a few  fresh ideas there that really haven't hit the market yet.

Yeah, 2E brought me back in.  The rules are cleaner, and the complexity is layered/modular.  That, and finding an accessible gaming group that sticks with a game.  We're all heading up to Battle for Salvation this weekend to play in the Malifaux tournament.

Let me know next time you revisit D.C., so's we can get a beer.  Think about NOVA Open for next year.

  3. Wow, the weathering on the torii gate is great.A little confused about the lantern placement, though.

It's just there to occupy some of the negative space and add interest.  I was torn between that and the bonsai tree.  The tree was appealing because it would consume a little more empty space, and it's irregularity would break up the straight lines of the Torii gate.  But I decided I wanted to experiment with the OSL, and I figured it might add a little more life to the piece than a static bush.

  4. As always, you have great models!

    Thanks, Aaron!

I gather from the last podcast and from your signature that you moved out of the area. Sorry we couldn't fit in a little more gaming before you left!

Lovely Marcus crew. I even like the proxies. Great flesh-tone on Marcus and I like the molemen color. The 'hawk on Cojo is epic. What are the 30mm proxies supposed to be? Canine Remains maybe?

Thank you, Dgraz! Yup, sure enough, they're Canine Remains. But I call them Baby Cerberus's, ha, ha.

  5. Now that the Summer Painting Contest is complete, I can show these.....

Yup, there's some proxies in there, but I like to think that there's enough of the real-deal, and enough consistent theme, to appropriately honor Wyrd.

  6. Yeah, if I recall correctly, I learned about the errata about a week or two after I finished Cojo.  I was a little miffed!  What I'll probably do is make a 50mm, magnetized "adapter" for him, if I ever use him in organized play.

  7. hey Shades, nice to see you over here :)

Hey there, Demonn, fellow WAMPer! Yeah, 2E did everything it needed to do to bring me back into the game. Michael Brandt of NOVA Open fame launched a gaming group that has grown to well over 20 new Malifaux fans in only 2 months. We now play every Monday night -- Malifaux Monday! Most everyone agrees that 2E is now one of the best-designed and well-produced miniatures games on the market. Way to go, Wyrd!

  8. Love the frohawk! How did you sculpt it?

    It's actually a grass tuft…

... Shame about the arm join on the left shoulder (or is it just the photos?)...

Nah, you busted me. I was experimenting with different fillers: green stuff, Vallejo Plastic Putty, and Vallejo Stone Filler.

    DSC04016.JPG

The white areas show the Plastic Putty (the Stone Filler is white, too, but I think I tried that on a different model). The Plastic Putty was a lot easier and faster to apply, but it was hard to tell whether it was flush with the model or not. Plus, I was impatient. My interest in modeling trails my interest in painting. But it was a good learning experience. Good that I learn these lessons on gaming figures, so that I can apply the lessons to the rare display figure that I might paint.

  9. Thanks for looking and commenting, guys!

...how did you do the leaves?

The leaves are photo-etched brass (primed and painted with the rest of the model). I think I purchased them from Hasslefree Miniatures.

  10. The rulebook says for Replace: "When a model(s) Replaces another, place that model in base contact with the model it is replacing, then remove the replaced model from play. There must be room for the model to fit."

'Swarm Together' says: "Sacrifice this model and two other friendly Steampunk Arachnids in base contact with it. Replace these models with one Steampunk Arachnid Swarm..."

The rulebook says to first place the new model and then remove the replaced model.

The Action says to first remove the replaced models and then place the new model.

The statements are contradictory. In such a case, the model's rules take precedence over the rulebook.

The question I have is, where can I place the new Arachnid Swarm? Must I place it anywhere where it would virtually touch all 3 former Arachnids? Or can I place it anywhere on the perimeter of where the 3 former Arachnids were located, e.g. with only one edge-point of the Swarm touching one edge-point of one of the Arachnids?

  11. Thanks, Hookers.

So the pig can basically pass through or bounce off the target (or technically, off of the farthest melee radius), as long as the distance between the target and the end-point does not exceed the distance between the target and the origin.

For example, if I Pigcharge beginning 3" away from the target, the pig may end the movement within melee range of the target or anywhere within a 3" radius of the target. It may not move up to its full Cg distance if that movement places the pig further than a 3" radius from the target.

If I may speculate....I doubt the designers wrote the last sentence of the "Toward/Away From" definition considering what effect it would have when combined with the Pigcharge. I suspect it was written to prevent using circuitous routes as a means to defeat the intent of "move toward the target using the shortest route". That said, the combined effect is close enough to what I think they want to achieve with Pigcharge. A little flaky, but close enough.

If it were up to me, I'd specify that Pigcharge requires the model to Push to the target, and then optionally permits the model to Push further, not to exceed its Cg distance for the total movement for the action.

  12. I'm asking, what is the source of that rule? Is it written in Pigcharge? In Stampede? Somewhere under Movement? In the errata?

Please cite the specific location where I can read it.

As far as I can tell, I can end a Pigcharge farther away from the target than I began, if we're assuming that I move the pig the full Cg.

Let's say I begin 3" away from the target. I Pigcharge directly towards the target and continue the full Cg distance (12") through the model, which Pigcharge allows me to do. That movement places the piglet 9" away from the target, minus the width of the target's base, so roughly a little less than 8" away from the target. In this situation, the pig ends the Pigcharge farther away from the target than it began. Sorry if I've overlooked something blatantly obvious, but I don't see a rule that specifies that the pig is precluded from performing this action, i.e. a rule that says the pig must end closer than when it started.

  13. Well, I just played my 7th or so game today, and I finally had the opportunity to actually set up my pigs for a Stampeding Pigcharge for the first time! Now, that I've actually finally played it, it occurs to me that the rule might as well be interpreted that you Pigcharge up to Cg, meaning that you can choose to either stop at the target or continue. If the rule forced you to move the full Cg distance, you could still effectively move less than the Cg distance by looping around or reversing direction. So in either interpretation of the rule, you Push to the target and then can choose how much farther to Push.

  14. Thanks, Gremlin Swarm. For the Stampede, do you require that the pig stops upon contacting the target, or do you allow it to continue moving up to its full Cg, like a non-Stampeding Pigcharge? If you require it to stop, what part of the Stampede rule leads you to that conclusion?

Thanks for helping interpret the rules on this.
