  1. I missed one game and your painting bonus. Will fix this now! ~J~
  2. @Rathnard: I haven't looked at squires yet, but I will now. After a few nights trying this out, so far, I have successfully drafted the Pheldagriff shard TWICE and won once. Both times we were doing a free-for-all, which is how this seems to work best at the moment until I iron out all of the home-brew errata details. For instance, all lands count as Snow-Covered Lands is a given assumption. Highlight of the cube so far, was when I was smashing away with a combination of Arcum's Sleigh and Igpay Atinlay from my 5th turn on, and all of my opponents were trying their hardest to make me say something NOT in pig Latin, at which they failed. And before I whittled a blue-control opponent (playing behind the shield of Common Courtesy and a Wall of Kelp) with a Mesa Chicken and a bouncing Pheldagriff, he was down to 2 life before my turn came around. As a final gasp, he cast Ashnod's Coupon and gave me his credit card to go get him a Mana Potion, hoping I would finally screw up my speech and have to sacrifice Igpay. I passed with flying colors with the whole store watching (and laughing) and smashed my remaining opponents within three more turns. The cube works, but nothing is sacred here, and nothing wins the game in one turn, and EVERYTHING IS ANNOYING (in that game? Ankh of Mishra, Stop It!, Winter Orb, and Dingus Staff ALSO made our lives hell ). ~J~
  3. Greetings Malifools & Malifemmes! All month at Hat's games, we'll be meeting on Fridays and Saturdays for regular game play. I might throw in impromptu events such as painting contests or coloring contests, but we will primarily focus on gameplay and catching everyone up to speed with the current V2 rules and latest errata. There will be points awarded for all games played in the following scheme: - 1 point for playing a game on Friday - 1 point for playing a game on Saturday - 1 point for playing with a fully-painted crew (once per week) - 1 point for trying a crew you've never played before (once per week) - 1 point for making a new purchase (once per week) - 2 points for assisting with or running a demo for a new player - 2 points for trying a crazy multi-player game - 2 points for winning an impromptu contest (e.g. coloring) - 5 points for playing your first game ever (BONUS!!!) - 5 points for painting your entire collection (BONUS!!!) This league is FREE to the public, and I will be providing prize support for our top-scoring players! Scoreboard will stay right here... (Last update: 11/29/10) More updates to come... ~J~
  4. Who else spotted the cardboard Mordheim terrain??? I did
  5. Not to burst your bubble, but you can't run Rusty Alyce with Pandora. ~J~
  6. Oooohh... an excuse for me getting a performer!
  7. Purchases complete... will post final list for the Fail Cube here for anyone with passing interest in the project!
  8. Person sees camera. Person wants to walk past camera. Person does not want to be on film. Person puts up hand to screen face. Person ponders, "Well, maybe it would be OK to be on film a little... tee-hee." Case closed. ~J~
  9. It's not quite like that, but I do remember and love that article. Playing with a severe handicap can bring out the creativity in a player who would otherwise do little more than pick the best 600-dollar deck they can build. ~J~
  10. @Dragoon: The rules booklet comes with both of the starter boxes, and most game stores can order in the main rulebook. @all: Concerned with fiddly models, I just made sure to make the most of all the free foam and boxes that come with the box set models! Each large boxed model comes with two layers of nice packing foam, so I cut into that with scissors and made custom cases for the boxed model(s) and anything that goes with them by theme. Then I just bring a case of the little boxes with me to game, and know where everything is by order of their faction, as well as synergy/partnership tactics. It's really quite the exercise in OCD!
  11. So it looks like we could go either way on format. I'll pair people up if that seems appropriate to the crowd, or I'll make it individual if everyone seems experienced enough to handle it, with accommodations for our newest players. As it turns out, I can easily make enough set-ups for three or more games of the same scenario, simultaneously, so whatever works! ~J~
  12. Please read the following only if you are an avid (or more appropriately, CASUAL) player of M:tG... +++++ Ever sick of not being "That Guy" in our local cube who always seems to pull the Umezawa's Jitte, Nicol Bolas - Planeswalker, or Platinum Angel, I have been striving for a better solution. What I've always liked about Cube has been the pressure to create your deck on-site, to play with great strategy and forethought, and to be adaptive. What I have hated, on the other hand has been the top-tier attitude with which the cube has been constructed. YES it's the best game-winner of all time. NO it doesn't make a balanced cube - some cards just win because they exist! So I have resolved to construct our store's first Fail Cube. It is to be filled with the stinkiest of cards, without so much as strategy or theming in mind, but only a thorough appreciation for how well players might adapt to how crappy it is. The idea here was not to just take a shovel to a mouldering commons box, but rather to pick entire sets of specific expansions from which to construct the Cube, and then to add a few select cards. So far, the Cube consists of the following: - Homelands... EVERY CARD (especially Apocalypse Chime!!!) - Fallen Empires... EVERY CARD (especially Ebon Praetor!!!) - Unglued... EVERYTHING - Unhinged... EVERYTHING - Alliances... 4x Phelddagrif (Phelddagrifs are common in failcube, and MUST disobey the Highlander rule) - Planeshift... 4x Questing Phelddagrif (see above Fail Cube requirement) - What's next? Thinking of adding in every card even remotely to do with Beebles. Also all the "ante" cards... won cards go permanently into the winner's deck in the next round! Do you guys have any opinions on what should go into this cube? I'm specifically looking for suggestions for what would make various parts of Ung/Unh work better, without adding too much extra (I won't want to dilute, for instance, the effectiveness of Apocalypse Chime on about 25% of the cards!). ~J~
  13. Someone "solved" my Teddy problem last week. Hand reduction + head shot. :'( I was a saaaaaaad panda... ~J~
  14. I know it's the Ogre armature talking here, but he looks like he's had a few too may Trick 'r Treaters, but great nonetheless!
  15. Don't forget - show up this Friday by 7 for our Malifaux tournament! This is a doubles tournament - you will be paired up with a partner based on your ability (each team needs a handicap!) and will play all three Halloween scenarios. Teams will be scored on their performance, and the best team (or teams) will be awarded awesome prizes (prizes depend greatly upon attendance so BE THERE!!!). Bonus points will be awarded to participants in our ancillary coloring contest! ~J~
  16. SEE YOU GUYS TOMORROW!!! Open gaming and coloring contest begin at 7 and 8 respectively!!! ~J~ ... !!!
  17. We usually kick off league around 6 or 7 so as to try to make Malifaux look more fun than Pokemon, and so as to leave time after children leave to be able to drop a few F-bombs. Didn't work so well when one of our players flipped a black joker and dropped MF right next to one of the Poke-moms and felt terrible until well after the Poke-kids left. Our paid event will begin around 8 or 9 (probably 8) to give some of our regulars enough time to show up after work. I'll make a post about times for next Friday and Saturday as well! ~J~
  18. Our events were not listed online as promised by the RinCon admins, we weren't allowed to make announcements (so as not to disturb the roleplayers, as if... &_&), and we were all stuck on the FURTHEST end of one really big room. Also we didn't get prize support after we went to all the trouble to register our events. Fun stuff. ~J~
