  1. HUGE fan of MKII Warmachine and Hordes. It's exactly what the games needed and they really drive them forwards. MKII Warmachine is very good with some good changes (Skarrebomb, Temporal Barrier, Sorcha, Bane Knights, Idrians (!!!), Vilmon)...it all became less weird and a rulesfest that was at the end of MKI. Things are more streamlined now and work much better. The PP forum is a total disaster at the moment IMO. People are screaming so many strange things about the games, it's not even funny anymore. There are so many naysayers about WM vs Hordes, Skorne, etc. The whole Hordes fieldtest is getting quite weird with some of the people posting. Hordes is getting there...Skorne needs some tweaks (some stuff is too good, other aren't) and some small things in the rest of the factions and done. People screaming Hordes doesn't hold up against Warmachine really amaze me. Hordes is powerful and holds his own against Warmachine very well. Thing is, the game has moved on and you'll have to change gameplay to an extent. But for me, that's what keeps it fresh 8)
  2. Cheers lads! Some more hours of work to do...I'll post the next update (or the final pics, whatever comes next!).
  3. Very nice colors and I like the painting technique and colors a lot too! Job's a good 'un!
  4. Hey guys, I'm working on a nice doggie for an online painting contest. The miniature is from Artefactory (can be ordered through Jérémie Bonamant) and is a fantastic sculpt. I made him a post-apocalyptic nuclear waste base with an arm from another Artefactory model, a Fenris Games barrel and a twig. The base will become a sludge pool (so his jumping pose is also more logical). Next steps will be to get the tongue a bit better, paint his tool (yes, he is well endowed) and finish the base. Any suggestions? Cheers! Marijn
  5. Penguins painted by Chris Yaro The very southern tip of Mystri Island is quite cold and there are subantarctic conditions, including habitation by penguins and Leopard Seals. Through an extraordinary event, one morning the penguins gained sentience and by late that same afternoon had split themselves into factions, the Kingfishers and the Penguinmentarians, and were having at each other on the field of battaile. Apparently the newly-sentient penguins had found an old history of the English Civil Wars and used that as their social guide .... Intrepid explorers Janice Prishwalken and Richard Smith-Grenville had heard from their ally, the Reptilian Hunter Stalks-at-Dawn, that, in his words, "the ice birds are behaving strangely." Richard scoffed at the notion that birds could aid the German war effort but Janice insisted on investigating, knowing as she did that their German foe was not too proud to investigate any paranormal activity on the island. After a journey of four fraught days, she got pummelled with quite a few well aimed snowballs for her efforts! These are 15mm-scale penguins (they are approximately 8mm tall), who, being now civilized, have seen fit to form themselves up in Regiments of Flippere (24 shotte with snowballes, 11 doughty pikemen with icicles, and one standardbearere with squid on icicle standard) or Regiments of Seale (ten fierce leopard seales, eighteen carefree, impetuous cavalieres with snowballes, plus a high commander and a standardbearere). Snowballers shoot at the enemy, the Regiments of Seals are (relatively) fast moving as the creatures glide along on the ice, attempting to bowl over the enemy, although the staunch icicle men will poke at the seales and attempt to turn them aside. We suggest that these are useful for more than pulp gaming! Indeed they can be used as straight English Civil War gaming, except the casualties are simply birds who have been hit by snowballes and whose feelings have been hurt! Rarely is there even a scratch suffered in the Penguish Civil Wars. Sculpted by "Whiff Waff." Chris Yaro has put the regimentes in snowy little dioramas, which are not included. Penguin Regiment of Flippere (1 standarde bearere, 11 icicle pikemen and 24 snowballe shotte) $9.99 Penguin Regiment of Seale plus High Commande (10 Leoparde Seales, 18 Cavalieres with snowballes, standarde bearere and his lordship Sir Robin Byrde $9.99 The Penguish Civil Wars The Higher Intelligence knew it was time to send the monolith back to the planet with those ape creatures, past due actually. But the Higher Intelligence was having a bad day, and before it realized it, the monolith had missed its destination and ended up sitting in a field of ice on the bottom of an island, sheer whiteness surrounding the enlightenment device, no one there to enlighten. Well, almost no one. Standing before the freshly deployed monolith was a little black and white bird, which waddled over to the shiny rectangle and, before the Higher Intelligence could retrieve it, touched the monolith with its slender flipper. The bird backed up with a start and looked around, seeing everything in an entirely different way. Not sure how to handle this new perspective, the penguin rushed to the edge of the ice and walked along it, perhaps hoping to find an answer at the water’s end. *** The explorers had headed inland along the ice a few hours ago, leaving one man to watch the boat, without which they would be stranded, doomed. This man, to the best of his ability, read SR Gardiner’s latest work on the English Civil War and tried to stay warm. Along the edge of the ice came a penguin which was behaving most strangely, taking in its surroundings with an awareness entirely inappropriate for a bird. As the man watched in wonder the new arrival waddled up to him, looked at the book and then deep into the man’s face. The man realized to his astonishment that the bird’s expression clearly posed a silent question – “what’s this all about? Why am I here?” The bird looked especially closely at the book, such that the man placed it on the ice, pages open, to see what this most unusual creature would do. To his amazement the penguin settled down beside the book and began to read it, taking in page after page. The history of the great civil war sped past the bird’s little eyes, Edgehill, Newbury, Marston Moor, and beyond. After two hours or more, the bird peered at the man, snatched up the book in its flippers, and looked at him beseechingly. “Yes, quite, please do old man” the man said briskly, “I’ve another copy at home.” The bird nodded once, turned and was gone as quickly as it had arrived. The man pinched himself, felt the pain, and solemnly swore to himself to put it out of his mind immediately and never mention it to another soul. Within a week the wars had begun, the newly enlightened penguins separating themselves into the Kingfisher and Penguinmentarian factions, arraying themselves in serried ranks, the Sleeves of Snowballes forming around the solid core of Icicles. Though they could not shoot, the Icicles were vital all the same, to ward off the attacks of the Regiments of Seale, which creatures carried two carefree penguin cavaliers as they skidded at (relatively) high speed along the ice, bowling over any birds in their path unless they could be poked off course by the doughty Iciclebirds. It mattered not to those penguins, arrayed in their regiments, that the only casualties in these battles were bruised egos – was this not how The Book told them things were? *** A hundred miles north Janice Prishwalken left the savannah in the center of the island and returned to the embrace of the jungle, the Gurhkas and Richard following closely behind, all relieved that the Savannah Lords had not intercepted them. After resting for an hour or so on a fallen tree, she saw a sudden movement and made out the shape of her friend, the Reptilian hunter Stalks-at-Dawn, who seemed to materialize out of the jungle growth. How long had he been there watching them? She gave him the usual greeting, "good hunting," and he said the same in reply. He looked at her a moment, cocked his head, and said, "the ice birds, they are behaving ... strangely." Stalks-at-Dawn knew that Janice needed to know of any unusual developments on the island, and he always appeared to her when something odd happened. How he always knew where she was, she could not say. "What are the ice birds," she asked, "and what sort of strange behavior is this?" The reptile hissed, cocked his head, and replied, "we do not hunt them for it is too cold where they live. In the far south. But one of our scouts, Can-Cut-First, watched them. They group. They throw balls of snow at each other. Some sit on seals. These slide on the ice into other ice birds. Strange. Yes." Janice turned for a moment to report this to Richard, and Stalks-at-Dawn disappeared back into the jungle. *** Travelling only at night to avoid the Doyta hillmen, Janice and her Gurkha guard, Nawang, left the valley passage through the Doyta Mountains and the stark beauty of the southern reaches revealed itself to her, breathtakingly cold, solid fields on ice shimmering blue in the moonlight. She had never come this far south before and could scarcely imagine that such a freezing clime could exist on an island that was so hot to the north, composed of jungles and savannah and desert. Janice felt the cold air on her face and thought of Richard with a smile. That look on his face, the way his moustache had bunched up when she mentioned the latest intel from Stalks-at-Dawn. He had, of course, scoffed at the very notion of militant birds, much less that they had anything to offer anyone of any military value whatsoever. But as always he had relented when Janice insisted and sent one of the Gurkhas to assist her on her excursion. And now four days later here she was, a herd of wooly rhinos grazing below her, along the roots of the mountain -- the prized mounts of the faraway Savannah Lords, she thought grimly, bought by them at a premium price, for they were not native to the savannah, and would not breed there. Janice and Nawang patiently waited until the wind shifted before moving out of the pass; they both knew what these animals were capable of when angered. She knew this was where the rhinos truly belonged, but it still seemed odd that lance-bearing Savannah Lords were not perched atop them, assaulting them at full gallop, twenty foot lances lowered. The wind eventually shifted and they moved silently out onto the ice. Dawn broke. It didn't take long for the two travellers to find what they were looking for, and they approached one of several groups of penguins. Thwack. Nawang was hit on the head by a snowball. Thwack thwack, two hit Janice, and Nawang drew his kukri. "No, Nawang, it's ok. Have you ever seen a penguin do this before?" "Penguin?" he replied, "what is a penguin?" "These are penguins," Janice said over the rising din of penguin squawks, pointing to the birds as another snowball flew past her head. Soon the snowballs subsided, and the two humans saw, to their astonishment, that fully two thousand penguins or more were now massed on the ice before them, in four great bodies, each made up of a central block of birds bearing icicles, flanked by two sleeves of birds with snowballs. And now a new surprise -- sliding out between two of these battalions, headed straight for Janice and Nawang, came a large seal bearing two penguins on its back, each of the birds carrying a large icicle, one with a squid impaled on its point, the other with a regal bearing that suggested command. As the seal drew closer Janice could smell the fish on its breath; against her better instincts, she knelt so as to make eye contact with the lordly penguin on its back. The penquins saw this, took it for deference, and began to squawk approvingly .... *** Götz thought that Captain von Schrecklichdorf was working too hard. Surely he cannot win the whole war by himself, Götz mused, and sharpened his trench knife. The captain was sent to this island to uncover its mysteries, but there are too many of those here for two mens' lifetimes. And now thinking birds? Combat penguins? But at least I've been able to talk sense into the captain, thought Götz. When the Doyta, their barbarian friends to the south, told the German exploration party that the penguins were making war on each other like the armies of old, none of the stosstruppen believed them, Götz included, but the captain paused and cleaned his monacle, clearly pondering this. He had then looked at Götz and suggested that a penguin, a penguin with the will to sacrifice itself for the Fatherland, might just be able to make it through the wire, perhaps even under the wire, bearing a satchel of dynamite .... Götz had considered insubordination, shaking the captain by his shoulders, but he did not have it in him, and anyway, one does not shake a Junker. Certainly not a good soldier like Götz. Instead he mustered up all his manners and his deference for an officer and stated the obvious. With infinite patience he said, "aber ein Pinguin würde nicht lange in den Schützengräben überleben." All at once the fog seemed to leave his captains eyes, eyes that had seen too many bizarre things these past few months, and he was sharp again. Yes, quite, v. Schrecklichdorf thought, smiled briefly, and turned away. And so the kaiser's men will not journey to the land of the penguins after all, Götz thought with relief, and strapped his coal scuttle helmet back on. They were moving out. Where others among the Protectorate see only a faceless sea of heretics, Vindictus sees potential devotees of the True Faith. Where others preach with words, Vindictus communicates with agony. The holy zealots who follow this unforgiving priest fight with the strength of fanatics and martyrs, adding to their own numbers with each strike. 11. THE DARK STAR ‘Are you here?’ the hulking youngster whispered the words of greeting toward the unmoving shadows of Pulp City’s chimneys. A female silhouette emerged from the darkness without a single sound. The wind coming from the sea brushed the microfiber cloak that hugged her frail body. ‘I’d hoped we’d never meet again’ said the woman in a voice that hinted her alien origins. ‘Good to see you too’ snarled the giant. ‘Did you make it back with no trouble?’ ‘It was close this time. I think they planted the tracking device in my ship, found it only after a couple of days and had to lay low. They sent the big guns this time, I almost find it pleasing to see I cause so much trouble to the warlord.’ ‘You made your mark but it’s not like you started the movement. This race is not ready for a chain reaction yet, observe how the humans topple every obstacle in their way, there is lots to learn from them.’ ‘I don’t find it inspiring. That is not what I am here for. Take a look at those crowds, suddenly filled with the need to go out in that cold darkness, light up some trees, sing a few sickeningly sentimental songs, and forget how bloodthirsty they are every other day of the year.’ ‘We call it Christmas.’ ‘“We?” Are you still serious about that? Tritonious, they treat you like a monster, a freak even without knowing the monster your father is. How can you be still pretending you’re a part of this?’ ‘None of your problem anyway. Your problem is there’ Tritonious pointed towards the night sky. The stars were bright but one of them shone brighter than the others. ‘Believe it or not, two thousand years ago they assumed the fleet was a comet. They were right about one thing: this thing in the sky always means changes. Chaos.’ ‘And that is why it will get dirty and bloody soon. Did you find any allies?’ ‘Not many. Some didn’t believe me when I said I am more than a mutant. Some laughed. But some took it seriously and we’ll be ready for them.’ ‘Good. Here’re the estimated numbers. We’ll be seeing more scout activity in the coming days.’ She handed Tritonious a glowing disk. ‘One more thing – will I ever learn your true name?’ The woman stopped and looked back. ‘Not this time. Call me your sister, call me Virgo, but my true name would mean it’s personal. It’s not. I just want those bastards dead. All of them.’ Link: http://pulp-city.com/

However, the same procudure is used for these 30mm stands. It's only the base size that has changed. For the Large (60mm) stands please see the appropriate listing as they are different for assembly purposes. STEP 1: Starting with your components, 1 Base, 1 Peg, 1 Round 3mm (diameter) x 2mm (thickness) Magnet, 1 3mm Square Magnet. Remove your protective paper coating from both the base and peg. STEP 2: Some people find it ideal to super glue the peg into the stand at this stage, as it gives something more to hold onto while placing magnets. Already being a snug fit, you may need to give a little down ward pressure onto a flat surface for the peg to make definate contact with the base at the join. Using super glue will simply make sure that it never falls out. STEP 3: Before placing and gluing any magnets, you will need to make sure of polarity. Simply take one square and one round magnet and let them join together. This is how the magnets will sit while your model is joined to the stand. STEP 4: Start by test fitting your square magnet into the square slot at the top of the peg (as pictured). The top surface of the square magnet will sit flush with the top of the peg, leaving the round magnet sitting proud. Remove the magnets and apply super glue to the three surfaces you noticed that come in contact with the peg. Keep the super glue as minimal as possible, so as to minimise mess. The magnet is a snug fit also. Set this aside and allow to dry. STEP 5: Moving onto your model to be mounted on the stand, locate where your normal flight stand peg would go. STEP 6: Drill the hole out to a diameter of 3mm. The best way to do this while putting minimal stress on small plastic components is to run a 3mm drill bit in a cordless drill on a backwards setting. This actually turns the excess plastic into powder under a more controlled action, rather than removing large amounts of swarf too quickly and undesirably. Drill to a minimum of 2mm deep to allow full insertion of the round magnet, any less and you wont get it to sit flush with the models surface. STEP 7: Place a minimal amount of super glue in the hole you have drilled out. With the round magnet still attached to the peg as shown in Step 4 (so as to keep your polarity correct) push the round magnet into the hole. The peg and square magnet wont allow you to push the round magnet any further than flush with the models surface. So even if you have drilled more than 2mm, it simply isnt a problem. Once dry you have now fully assembled your Magentic Acrylic Flight Stand. You can now place your model ontop and see how it clicks into position. PLEASE NOTE: Models are held firmly in place during game play, can be lifted or slid across the table with ease and reliability. These stands are NOT designed for larger kits that have more weight in one location, due to turrets or sponsons. Use the Large Stand kit for these models. While most modellers/gamers prefer clear stands, you also have the option of having your stands made in any of our available colours. Check the colour swatches below for examples. 17. The Butcher is a potent symbol of the consequence of treachery against Empress Ayn Vanar. In the protective casing of his modified suit of steam-powered armor shaped from the hull of a warjack, he is a force of destruction, a one-man wrecking crew. Soldiers across western Immoren cannot purge the vision of the axe-wielding giant from their nightmares: a man become a living personification of warfare and bloodshed. This all-new version of The Butcher of Khardov presents a dynamic new sculpt for this classic warcaster. The Butcher of Khardov – 2010 comes in a blister (PIP 33072). 20. Still think the guy can't sculpt either fur, hands or hair. Always looks rather amateurish. This one is no exception.
  21. Yesterday we played our first games of Strange Aeons. I quickly painted two agents in four hours time on Saturday...terrific sculpts by Black Scorpion. They are easy to paint up, except for the faces which are hidden under the hats. Agent Johnson Agent Wylder Here's a photo of the three agents that were used Sunday (including a model of a friend): By the way, you can find a game report with photos on my website in the Battle Reports section: http://paintoholic.nl/

  23. Horus Heresy is a brand new board game that takes place in the grim darkness of the far future of Warhammer 40,000, one of the preeminent science fiction settings ever created. It is also without a doubt one of the most iconic environments of all time, having remained in active development for more than two decades, across a wide variety of media from tabletop miniatures games, board games, novels and more. The sprawling mythos, baroque aesthetic sensibilities, and dark gothic outlook are unmistakeable, and are enjoyed by legions of fans all around the world. We at Fantasy Flight Games were honored to have an opportunity to contribute to this richly textured history. We chose to highlight the most pivotal and climactic moment from the Warhammer 40,000 canon, a seminal event that occurred in the Imperium of the 31st millennium. It is a tale that has also fiercely captured the imaginations of writers and fans alike, as it rings with grand, mythic significance! I speak of the fall from grace of the great Warmaster Horus, once the greatest scion of the Holy Emperor of Terra, now turned heinous betrayer and intent upon the total destruction of the Imperium. The story is the stuff of legend, and for those who are interested in exploring further, we heartily recommend the phenomenal Horus Heresy series of novels published by the Black Library. The game takes place during the apocalyptic final battle on the planet Terra, the birthplace of mankind and the heart of the Imperium. This is the last stand, for both sides. As some of you may know, Games Workshop published an earlier board game by the same name, many years ago. This classic GW release served as inspiration as we considered how to approach these momentous events of the Horus Heresy, and specifically, the Battle of Terra. If perhaps you've ever seen the original board, you will recognize that the game map is very similar. We're proud to pay homage to the richness of this source material, while expanding the play experience in ways never imagined back when it was first in print. As we move closer to the release of Horus Heresy, we'll continue to explore the game in more detail including a review of the forces available to each player, the order and initiative systems, and combat resolution. For today's article I'm going to set the stage for this monumental conflict, and describe the start of play of Brother Against Brother, the scenario recommended for first timers which roughly covers the events as described in the original stories. Horus Heresy is not a game where players safely inch forward towards an eventual clash of forces. In this game, the battle is about to reach its peak. Horus' flagship, the Vengeful Spirit, has just moved into orbit around Terra. The Emperor has committed to this final stand against the traitorous forces of his once celebrated son. There is no compromise, nor time to consider alternate plans. The campaign against Terra will end soon, and only one side will be left standing. After both players have finished placing their units on the board, it may appear at first glance that the ensuing conflict will be quite one-sided. A naive Imperial player might surmise their vast defenses are impenetrable, as most of the board will be filled with legions of forces loyal to the Emperor. However, Traitor players take heart for two events are going rattle the foundations of the Imperial player, and both take place before the first turn even begins! The first action in the game is called corruption, when both players will begin to understand exactly how extensive the insidious spread of Chaos truly is. The Traitor player selects twelve individual Imperial Army units or Imperial Tank Divisions, and tests each one in turn. The heroic and steadfast Space Marines cannot be targeted as their loyalty cannot be questioned! They will fight without fear and to the death against Chaos and the dark powers of the warp. The Traitor player will draw a bombardment card for each target unit, and refer to the symbol at the bottom of the card to discover to whom that unit is loyal. Each unit's loyalty may only be jeopardized once during this opening phase, and the number of corruption tests allowed will vary for each scenario. If upon revealing the bombardment card you find an Imperial Eagle, that unit will continue to fight in the name of the Holy Emperor. If the card displays the Chaos star, the unit has actually switched its allegiance, and will immediately have its grey Imperial base swapped for a black Chaos base for easy identification. That unit is now under the full control of the Traitor player! At this point, the board will probably look quite different. Some regions that previously represented Imperial strongholds will now contain a mix of loyal and Traitor units, which will quickly escalate into combat at the start of turn one. Other areas will be completely under the control of Chaos, likely forcing the Imperial player to reconsider their plans. Once the corruption step is complete, there is but one final action the Traitor must take before the first turn begins in earnest, that is to order a barrage of orbital bombardments in an attempt to decimate Imperial units or blow through the protective plasteel walls of their fortifications. You will draw upon the same deck as before, except now you will refer to the top of the card to resolve the attack. Each bombardment must be declared as either a precise or reckless strike, which will impact both the accuracy and effect of the attack. A precise bombardment will hit more often than a reckless one, but the reckless bombardment will occasionally cause tremendous amounts of damage. As with corruption, each scenario will divulge how many bombardments are available to the Traitor player at the start of play. If you're playing Brother Against Brother, the Traitor player makes four attacks. The corruption and the bombardment mechanics do a remarkable job of setting the stage for a mind-blowing finale to a cataclysmic confrontation. Every time I play, I marvel at how much I feel like I'm part of this final, epic showdown. We are thrilled to be producing this game, and cannot wait until you have had a chance to join in the fun! I'd like to close with a personal letter from Alan Merrett, the IP Manager for Games Workshop and one of their longest serving employees. Thank you Alan for your dedication and support, for granting us the opportunity to create this game, and for the years of hard work you've put towards the development of this fantastic setting. In 2004 I wrote a preface to 'The Horus Heresy Volume 1: Visions of War' an art book by the Black Library (Games Workshop's fiction publishing imprint) in which I gave a brief outline of the publishing history of the Horus Heresy and made reference to the amazing fan support and enthusiasm it has enjoyed over the years. The art book featured pictures taken from the Sabertooth Games collectible card game the 'Horus Heresy CCG' – the background story of which was a real labour of love for me and for FFG's own Steve Horvath who was the project lead at Sabertooth at that time and my main collaborator on the project. Sadly that game is no longer being published but it was the catalyst for GW to continue working on the Heresy in some other ways. 'Visions of War' was merely the first of what ended up being a series of four art books covering the Heresy and they have been subsequently reprinted as a single work entitled 'Horus Heresy - The Collected Visions'. In addition to this the Black Library has been producing a best-selling line of novels detailing the Heresy in hitherto untold depth. Since the release of the first novel these books have enjoyed unprecedented popularity amongst the fans of the Warhammer 40,000 universe and continue to feature strongly in the sales charts. My 2004 preface singularly failed to mention one small piece of Horus Heresy history. This was the release in 1993 of 'Horus Heresy' – a board and counters wargame by Jervis Johnson. This was the second in a short series of Games Workshop games launched under the rather unimaginative 'Wargame Series' label. Despite critical and commercial success the series ended with game number three as Games Workshop increasingly focussed its efforts on the miniatures and tabletop wargames that it is most known for. The game 'Horus Heresy' seemed destined for oblivion. That is until FFG stepped forward! This new game from FFG pays obvious homage to the original 'Wargame Series' effort but has been dusted with all-new FFG magic. The game board has clear similarities to the old game but a new set of rules and a raft of new components, including some really terrific playing pieces, mark this new game out as something a little special.
