Here is Reaper's fantastic Wood Elf King (#02934) sculpted by Werner Klocke and painted using Reaper Master Series paints. He features considerable freehand knotwork and was entered as the Dark Heaven Legends single small entry at ReaperCon '06.

This majestic Lord of the Woods stands atop a custom sculpted treestump adorned with tiny brass-etched leaves. His armor is finished in a fine metallic gold and is layered with gloss coats to create an authentic shine. The rest of the figure is finished with Testor's Dulcote to insure lasting protection.

This was the figure I've been practicing all that Celtic knotwork for! I love painting that stuff!

  2. There are a lot of names I didn't recognize in some of those lists. I will definitley have to check out some of their work. Do any of you have links to share too?

Here's a guy I didn't see mentioned but I kinda like his stuff too.

    Jerzy Montwill

A couple of the poses are a little stiff but that may be something translating the 2D concept art. Pretty cool stuff though.

  3. This has obvious interest to me considering what I do but here goes. My wife and I had this discussion on our way back from the paint club this weekend. I tend to favor both Tom Meier and Werner Klock lately for completely opposite reasons. Tom's stuff is obviously the most realistically rendered anatomy on the market. Werner's stuff tends to be more cartoony, but both have several figures where the facial features bear a striking similarity, particularly in the Elf ranges.

I still must give props to my all time favorite Jes Goodwin who gave us such fantastic figures as the (original!) Skaven and the Eldar.

Who is your favorite miniature sculptor and why?

  4. Also, the slightly anal comments on TMP made me wonder what these people do with their minis that the size is SO important down to the odd millimeter... ....I just don't get it why scale is SO important.

    Ditto!!!!

  5. I don't need to. The subject matter is a load of cobblers. I don't care how many people like them, this sort of garbage (the imagery, not the sculpts) has been done to death. Kudos to the sculptor, but the concepts are a bunch of chuff.

Aren't the Darksword things based on previous art from Elmore and Parkinson? Should they move on to other artists or just quit doing sculpts from their girly art?

  6. Thanks! This was tons of fun to paint! I planned out the knotwork days before even touching the brush. I printed it out on a little swatch of paper and then copied it with white paint onto the figure. See, that Jen Haley class is finally starting to pay off! I wonder what I'll come away with from the next one!

    sty·rene (stimacr.gifprime.gifremacr.gifnlprime.gif)

    n. A colorless oily liquid, C6H5CH:CH2, the monomer for polystyrene.

It is the plastic by which most model kits, gaming bases and GW figures are made. :D

This particular bit was carved from the sprue of a GW clear flying base, just 'cause it was handy.

This is Reaper's beautiful Lysette figure sculpted by Werner Klocke and painted in autumn colors using Reaper Master Series Paints. She features considerable freehand Celtic knotwork, and youthful freckles. The gem on her staff has been replaced with crystal clear styrene and tinted to contrast with her attire.

She is perched atop a custom sculpted, rune-carved staircase to give her a better vantage point to cast her spells.

I mainly did this to give myself ample practice at the knotwork. I love painting that stuff!

  8. This will be coming for a June release:

    Terri the Steam Mage

She has an optional right arm with another pistol for those who may not dig the spear thing.

I have the masters back and the mold guys did a gorgeous job on them. I will post another announcement with a painted photo closer to release. There are also several other things coming soon, but I can't show any of those yet. :vb_tongue

  9. Thanks ya'll!

The photo on this is a tad blown out as, after shooting it, I discovered I hadn't moved the lamp from shooting smaller figs. Anyway, the actual paint has a bit more "fleshy" tone. I wanted to avoid the sepia-like lighting effect represented in the original art since the figure would be viewed in a variety of lighting situations.

Thanks for the great feedback! This one was tons of fun!

  11. Every year for ReaperCon, they produce a limited-edition original Sophie miniature. This year's model was sculpted by Bob Ridolfi, with a Mardi Gras theme - complete with New Orleans 'gaslight' lamppost!

I got to handle this green this weekend and it is quite stunning! The wings attach to the back by a little pin connector, an excellent feature for those who may want to ditch the wings and putty up the slot.

Those that Come attend ReaperCon will receive one free with paid admission. For those that cannot make it, for the duration of ReaperCon 2006 it will be available for sale in the Asylum online store. You'll only be able to get your hands on this gorgeous model May 5-7, 2006.

  12. As a painter I hate integrated bases. The broccoli texture is the worst of all. The only exception would be when they aesthetically add to the composition like this:

    2986_G.jpg

Ordinarily I cut it off and pin the figures, too, even if they are tabbed for slot bases. Tabs are way easier to cut off than integrated bases.

As a sculptor, I'll put a figure on whatever someone pays me to. For my own things, I am in the premium round slot-base camp.
