  1. Interesting, so it appears that they very well could be random. The guy at the tournament didn't mention them being a different color. So I guess they either weren't or he didn't find it worth mentioning. I will be happy as long as at least one of them at my shop is an Outcast or Ten Thunders. Even if they aren't, I am sure I can find a use for whatever model in Through the Breach rpg sessions.

Boosting his cache to 4 might help. Given what he brings to the table (or doesn't), 1 is a mite miserly.

I would agree. Even though I am new to the game, I thought it was odd that he had a cache of 1 when compared to some of the other masters out there.

  3. I am curious if anyone thinks Von Schill will get an errata that will allow him to hire at cost any miniature with the Freikorps keyword. I know there is only currently Anna Lovelace outside of the Outcasts faction with the Freikorps word, but still saving one SS would be nice when you want to build a fluffy all Freikorps list. I am new to the game so I am not sure how often changes like this occur with Malifaux. Thoughts?

Timed/Tournament play is definitely a different beast, at least when any one participant is unaccustomed to it. After one or three events you should be able to finish round 5 more often than not.

Hopefully you guys get another tournament soon enough.

Yes there are plans for a tournament a month. They may vary each month such as Henchman Hardcore or maybe 40 or 45 SS. We have a limited amount of time is the problem. The store is only open from 11 AM to 6 PM. That is why the rounds had to have a two hour limit.

I made an error in my previous tournament results. I forgot that in the game against Tara, he also still had a minion in the far corner that was doing the Place Your Mark scheme that was still on the board when the time ran out.

  5. So the shop owner wouldn't open the Free RPG Day box for me, even though one of his employee's had said they would when it came in. So I still don't know what models are in there. There was a Malifaux tournament though and one guy at the tournament runs rpgs at another store in the region. He said his local store got two Resurrectionist models. I can't remember what one was, the other was a mindless zombie. He said the third model was a Guild Witchling Stalker or Handler. I can't remember which.

Does this match or resemble what you saw at your local store Kyris?

  6. I finished 7th in the tournament. It was three rounds. I went 1-2. I won my first game 8 to 3. The two that beat me were the first and second place finishers in the tournament. I lost to the winner 5 to 4 and to the runner up 9 to 6. I cost myself several points in both games by not placing my scheme markers correctly (wrong distance to score). Due to time constraints during rounds, we didn't get past the fourth turn in any of the games, but majority of the players were all new to the game and tournament. Had we been able to go full turns 4 and 5, I might have been able to win my two loses. I had ways to score in both games and should have been able to eliminate my opponent's chances of scoring. I had the winner of the tournament down to just Tara, while I still had Angel Eyes, Lazarus, Von Schill, Librarian, and Freikorps Mann. Against the second place player, I had my whole crew left and he was down to Marcus, Cerberus, and three Canine Remains. I only got one activation in turn 4 of that game. If I had been aware of the time ending, I would have activated a different model than I did and could have cost him at least one point while allowing myself to score at least two more. It was a learning experience in all three games and I look forward to getting better. I really felt that my inexperience attributed to my loses. I hope to not make those mistakes in the future.

  7. Surprised that I still have not been able to find out more details on this. And I have not heard from my local shop yet on whether they got their Free RPG Day stuff yet. I really want to know what the models are so I know if they will be of use to me.

With your model selection that looks like a pretty reasonable list.

Have fun at the tournament.  I'd suggest make sure you're familiar with your model cards as much as possible and the basic rules to minimise the time it takes you to make a move :)

This is part of the reason why I chose Von Schill and crew as my first crew. They seem to be pretty straight forward. They don't apply a lot of conditions. They look pretty cool. And I can use them if need be in future crews that I expand out to. This is sort of the same reason why I bought the starter set.

  9. My local store is having a tournament this weekend using the 2017 Gaining Grounds format. It will be 50 SS and is expected to run for three rounds based upon shop time contraints. I have a limited model selection since I only recently started playing. I have the Von Schill crew, Lazarus, and the 2nd Edition Starter set models. I came up with the following list:

Von Schill - The Shirt Comes Off - 4 SS Pool

    Steam Trunk

    Angel Eyes

    Lazarus

    Freikorps Librarian

    Freikorps Trapper

    Freikorpsmann x2

Does anyone have any recommended changes based upon my limited model count?

I find Katanaka snipers to be great utility pieces with good damage output and solid scheme running options (although every time you are not shooting with them, they may be wasted). They're points pricey but complement Mei well as she often prefers close combat! Their box is relatively cheap price wise too.

I have the Von Schill box that I had already bought. How would you compare the Katanaka Sniper to the Friekorps Trapper? The Trapper seems to be better in melee. The Sniper offers a free range 6 attack compared to the Trapper's situational free movement action. They are the same cost in a TT crew. Could I use the Trapper and buy something else for now?

I am curious about the Oiran with Rail Workers. I figure since a Rail Worker is slow, he could pair up with an Oiran and use their ability to bring enemies closer to the Worker to help them get into melee faster.

I have created a crew on this principle and at 50SS it would give me 9 models using Mei, Kang, Trapper, Emberling, 3 Rail Workers, and 2 Oiran. I wonder if they would be good at any of the schemes or strategies.

  11. I don't know why it should be a big secret. My local store told me that they should have their box this week and would let me know as soon as it comes in since I run other RPGs for them. Based upon your response Kyris, does that mean it is a mini with a card to make it usable in Malifaux as well as TTB? If so, what faction is it from, is it a mercenary? You have increased my excitement for this. I can't wait to see what it is! :D

  12. Adran - Thanks for the reply. If I were to take your recommendation and buy the crew box plus one or two boosters, which of the four boxes above would you recommend to start with? Or should I look at other models? I know Mei's crew lacks ranged attacks. Would I be better off with Oni, Snipers, or something else? I want to try and get a good fluffy/competitive base that I can adjust as needed. Is there a SS amount that I could start with as a base and add to, say 25 or 35 SS?

  13. According to the Free RPG Day site there will be a TTB Penny Dreadful One Shot. But it also says that there will be a Through the Breach minis set. Anyone have any idea what this might be? There is supposed to be three of them to a box (the same amount as the One Shot). The only TTB minis I am aware of are the male and female multi-part kits. I don't see full sets of them being given away. I have tried numerous Google searches with no results. If anyone can provide details on this, please post. Thank you.

  14. Here is a crew that I came up with. I am not sure how fluffy or competitive it is.

Mei Feng - Seismic Claws, Vapormancy, Recalled Training

    Emberling

    Kang - People's Challenge

    Mechanized Porkchop

    Katanaka Sniper

    Obsidian Oni

    Rail Worker

    Komainu

This gives me 8 models and a 6 SS pool. Any recommendations on changes? The idea is to make use of the Mechanized Porkchop, Rail Worker, and Komainu to provide Mei with Railwalk opportunities. The Oni to hand out Burning or to help with placing additional scrap markers. The Katanaka will provide some ranged support with placement hopefully allowing him to cover the majority of the board from a covered position. Kang to help hopefully hold down an area. I am not sure how fluffy this would be though since I only know the little provided on the website and in the 2nd edition rulebook about Mei Feng or Ten Thunders.

  15. I am a new player and I am looking to use Mei Feng as a master for Ten Thunders. I have read several posts on this site and Pull My Finger regarding Mei. I am aware of the summoning crew you can do with Toshiro. I am curious as to what possible fluffy and competitive builds that are available for Mei Feng. Is her Emberling, Kang, and Rail Workers auto includes? How many Rail Workers do people usually take? Should I consider Metal Gamin or Komainu? How fluffy would people consider Obsidian Oni? Are their other options that I am not aware of? Is it a good idea to take Foundry models from other factions? Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
