  1. Thanks.

Overall what I'm gathering is playing Malifaux you need a tool box of different units. And a big part is going to be to know what units to take based on the strat and schemes. I think this will take some time and experimentation. Its tough though because minis aren't cheap. For example I think if I am going to go into Outcasts (still a debate internally on if I will do Outcasts or Neverborn) I would need to have a Hodgepodge, Midnight Stalker, and Prospector (which is 3 more boxes with a bunch of other stuff I find way less useful all around) no matter what masters I use. I can't see using more than 1 prospector at a time. The Hodgepodge Effigy is of questionable use to me.

Those three seem way to useful to not have access to them.  This would be a lot less of an issue if they didn't have everything force bundled...

It's probably just me, but I'd have answered the question " is this a good selection of boxes to start with?" As yes, but " Is this a good list?" As no.

The only time I'd recommend a fixed list is for learning to play the game, and then I'd try and duplicate models as much ad possible as it makes it easier to learn, and once you have learnt the game to change the list around to learn what other things do before I'd think about being competitive,  and in general its easier to be competitive if you have a selection of models you know to pick from, rather than a completely fixed selection. But like I said, that is my view, and it isn't true for everyone.

Thanks! That makes a lot of sense.

That being said is there a better starting list I could make from those boxes? Is there a better selection of boxes for a similar price point you would suggest as a starting point?

  3. So as the title says, I'm very new to 3E. I played a tiny bit in 2E near the beginning of the edition but only a few games.

In reading the rulebook am I left with a few questions. (If they are explicitly in the book I am totally happy with just a page number of where I should go re-read the book).

1 - What do Keywords actually do? Is it anything more than just a restriction on crew hire costs?

2 - What if any are the significant differences between Minion, Henchman, and Enforcer? (Are there other categories on this level I am missing?)

3 - Do all VPs come from Strategies and Schemes?

4 - What determines the end of the game? I've seen many battle report videos where they say something like "And we decided to call it at turn 5." or something similar and I've yet to see a reason why they did that. Was it just that they got bored of playing? In none of these situations was one of the players tabled or anything so I am not clear on why/how the game ends.

5 - If you are tabled or your Master is killed do you lose immediately (like in Warmachine/Hordes)?

  4. So as the title says, I am considering getting into Outcasts. The two Masters that are most appealing to me in the faction are Parker and Tara.

From almost everything I read and watch Parker is very underpowered and just does not preform well. That leads me to look at Tara. I haven't found as much analysis on Tara so any resources that people think give a good picture of how to play her and what crews to bring would be appreciated.

That being said, what do people who know Tara think of this list (assuming I could even get the models, Wyrd is notorious for never producing enough that once they get sold out that's it, you'll never see them again).

    Timeless Tara Crew (Outcasts)
    Size: 50 - Pool: 2
    Leader:
      Tara, Timeless
    Totem(s):
      Karina
    Hires:
      The Nothing Beast
      Scion of the Void
      Thirty-Three
      Aionus
      Talos
      Void Hunter

Is this list viable? Is it competitive? What are the weaknesses that are easily exploited? What other models should I consider to cover those weaknesses?

  5. Thanks for the responses!

The Dead Man's Hand certainly helps, but knowing that the one list I have fully painted (Ramos) is 'dead' now for any type of Organized Play is a bit disheartening. Its so odd to see an edition just remove an army. I know it has happened but its usually because of a massive change (looking at you space dwarves 'Squats') and typically due to a loss of return for the company to keep producing them.

In fact this feels more like a hate move because some people would whine about summoning Masters. The pass tokens make that a non-issue now, and even more so make summoners actually feel underpowered. This was actually a big missed opportunity for Wyrd. They could have had a new sculpt for Ramos without messing up their story much. Something like Jailbreak Ramos.

The move to Ten Thunders for Lynch is also disappointing. I love the look and feel of Neverborn. Ten Thunders is a bit meh to me. Even Outcasts would have made more sense for both a story aspect and a theme aspect. Teddy and Stitched Together were some of my favorite models in the game and now I would have to replace them to use Lynch or pick a new Master (which means essentially buying a whole new team) to be able to use like 3 models. Ugh.

While I love the idea of getting into new masters/factions because they appeal to me, something about being forced into the change really irks me...

  6. Seriously Wyrd? I just started looking into getting back into Malifaux and since 3E is a thing I figured I should start researching. You just flat out deleted both of my lists. Ramos and Neverborn Lynch. So basically I would have to start over. Everything I have is pretty much invalidated in this edition. What a terrible choice to just remove armies from 2E... I guess I'm just done with Malifaux. Not gonna start another list and find out in a few years time it too will just get deleted from the game.

Updating this post to reflect the information below (IE DMH). Wanted to strike that last part out as it was a bit emotionally driven and has since been clarified (plus want to avoid more vitriolic and unproductive posts.
