  2. Vallejo is definitely good stuff but I prefer Reaper Master Series. One of the main reasons you touch upon in your post, Reaper takes a lot of the guess work out of painting by selling Triads of colors (easily expandable by mixing the three shades in various quantities to create more in between gradations).

Biggest advice I would give you is to take a stroll over to the Cool Mini Or Not website and search their painting tutorials. A lot of those guys seem to use Vallejo and have written some great toots on how to paint the difficult colors (White, Black, Red, etc.), materials (leather, satin, sheer, etc), and NMM. Frequently they will even include the Vallejo paints they use.

Any chance you could link to where I can find the painting tutorials on CMON? I looked at the site and couldn't find it.

  3.

Hope that helps, and if you'd like any other links or such, I can try to provide you things that I find helpful (Too many to simply start spamming, but if you have something specific I can provide my favorites :)).

Thanks for the reply Tawg. If you have anything on painting warm/cool grey that would extremely helpful. Also anything on painting leathers, black, and NMM would be great.

Honestly the internet is the only reason I've improved in 10+ years, but if you have a handful of sources you have found especially helpful please share!

  4. So I've been painting miniatures for a long time now (started when I was about 9 and now I'm 26), but I am entirely self taught. Recently I broke away from my Citadel crutch and started using vallejo paints for the Infinity project I started about a year ago. I love the line, but was able to use Angel Giraldez's facebook page to get an idea of the colors I wanted to use to get the effects I wanted. Where with citadel I was experienced with their comparatively limited line and knew what colors to use to get the results I wanted, I don't have the same experience with the much more extensive vallejo lines and am struggling to determine which colors I want to use.

Has anyone else run into this? I assume trial and error is the only way to overcome being overwhelmed, just wanted to see how others have tackled using this line.

  5. I have a few questions on this as I am also going to give this a go after my Black Friday Stuff arrives.

Yeah, coating them with a layer of gloss varnish won't dramatically alter the surface but gives enough tooth to paint on.

In your blog I believe you mentioned matt varnish as well, which do you prefer to give it tooth? Gloss or Matt?

Also, do you finish the models? if so, how? On my infinity stuff I generally finish with two layers of gloss varnish and two layers of matt varnish to prevent chipping and rubbing the paint off during play, but I am concerned that this process may alter the look of the translucent models too much.

  6. No worries. Thank you Tawg, Bengt and Still-Young. To be  honest I'm torn. On the one hand I really like the flying monkeys, Cooper, and the mannequins. On the other, the strong man is meh, the bearded lady is... well a bearded lady and the fat penguin thing just freaks me out to be totally frank. I also sort of had my fill from AHS: Freakshow.  I think the idea is awesome, and it totally fits the weird dark aspect of this world that I really love, but... like i said, I'm torn. A large part of that is that I really like the backstory of Colette and think I may prefer to go with the classical look.

I have another question for you all as well. It appears that the translucent and dayglow versions of the crews are highly sought after. I get that they are collectors editions but is there any particular reason for this?

  7. So I am tempted to pick up the Dark Carnival set from the black friday deals. I am new to the game but a long time veteran of other miniature games. I have a severe plastic-crack addiction and love limited edition sets. Is this one of those hot sets I should bite the bullet on?

Please forgive me if I placed this post in the wrong section.
