  1. As part of my upcoming campaign, I'm thinking about the major villain being an avatar of the Grave Spirit. I reread the lore and I'm thinking that Professor Heilin, the discoverer of Nythera, was resurrected by the Grave Spirit to become his walking avatar on Malifaux. Hiding behind the scenes, he's been building an army of undead Gremlins to use as his main forces and he will come to threaten the mining town of Sanctuary, where most of the adventures will be spent.

Does this sound plausible? I know that Titania was tainted by the Grave Spirit but she isn't his avatar, right?

Oh man, anything would be great, but yeah, my Fated are always so drawn to the Neverborn. They really set Malifaux apart from other settings, and all of my campaigns tend to come back to them, whether I plan it that way or not. When I ran Night of the Carver, they followed it up by heading off into the wilds to investigate Neverborn crypts, and it turned into a Malifaux version of Indiana Jones from there.

    That sounds really cool!

  3. Thank you! You were both helpful! One character I had was descended from an ancient Neverborn lord who fell in love with a human and sent her back home through the original Breach before it closed. My character was the grandson of that Neverborn who returned to Malifaux to find out the truth behind his strange visions.

  4. Hello, fellow Wyrdirinos and Through-The-Breacheroos! I'm starting up a campaign soon and one of the players joked at first about joining the Neverborn but then we started discussing how people in Malifaux end up as Neverborn. We've seen it happen before with a few of the models such as Perdita's cousin and the Scions of Black Blood, but how exactly do humans become Neverborn? It's not completely clear from what I've read.

I do know that the "half breeds" are looked down upon by the pure Neverborn (based off the last story featuring Lillith and her duel with Nekima) and is that a view universally kept by Neverborn tribes? It looks like Titania does not share that view.

  5. I should be getting a game with Titania soon, but from inspecting her cards I'd say if you just want to use her box then there's plenty there to make a ferocious list. Personally I only like the Nephilim models from Neverborn and I think complimenting Titania with the Merc/Neverborn from the Malifaux 2e starter would work out great.

one of my players is neverborn, and recently another pretty much threw his lot in with them too. It works for me because they are both more subtle players- think lucius or lynch rather than Lilith or collodi. Point out to them that even the most powerful neverborn move incognito amongst humans most of the time and let them feel more like Machiavellian conspirators rather than action movie thugs. If that doesn't work remind them that any overt neverborn aggression gets dealt with by The Ortega's on the one hand, and by Lilith if it isn't part of the 'plan'.

I'm hoping for that kind of game! One of the players tends to lets his wish fulfillment get a little out of hand when he plays, but he's a good guy outside of gaming and I'd feel bad not inviting him. :/ Judging by how he's played "evil" characters in Pathfinder, I can see him getting out of hand quickly.

I put "evil" in quotes as I know that the Tyrants and most of the Neverborn fit the descriptions of evil, but I wanted to put in a custom Tyrant that is neither good nor evil and call it Legacy. Legacy takes the form of a giant carnivorous book whenever it is summoned and its goal is to make sure that Malifaux lives on, no matter what the cost may be. This means occasionally be proactive and foiling the plots of the Resurrectionists, Arcanists, and others, though at the same time hammering down on those that try to change Malifaux to be different than it always was.

  7. Hello! I am starting up a new TtB campaign soon, and one player rolled the special event where their character was kidnapped as a baby and raised as a Neverborn (Pulled a Red Joker.) The other players thought it was a cool idea and wanted to know if their characters could be similar, and have hit upon the idea of playing as a group of Fated Neverborn working to bring about the supremacy of one of the Tyrants (which has yet to be decided.)

Has anyone run a game along these lines? I'm not opposed to it, and I think it could be really cool, but I'm worried that it may give one or two of the players a chance to derail things by killing everything in sight and generally being jerks because "Hey, we're evil at heart." I know the Neverborn are definitely not two-dimensional cardboard cut outs of villains, but any tips you guys might have for how to run a game this way would be appreciated!

  8. Mei is a model that leans heavily towards what you take in your list to make it shine, unlike Perdita who can stand well on her own and can have a lot of variety around her. Being able to Rail Jump is great, and she needs plenty of Metal things to move about. If you play her defensively and keep her back behind her men, you are not taking full advantage of her abilities IMO.

  9. Von Schill's playstyle is very forgiving, and very straightforward but he heavily favors Freikorps members and if you are not running a lot of them you are missing out on some of his abilities. He can keep his Freikorps going as a screen while at the same time popping enemy models with his Clockwork Seeker.

His box will also give you the Trapper and Librarian models, and the Freikorpsmen models look great in my opinion. They would be the only ones that are not necessarily mandatory in his list, though.

The Steam Trunk also has some great buffs and the ability to heal models, though it's slow and can be shot to Malfeas prettttty quickly.

I'm hoping Freikorps gets some new models in the next book (not the one coming out soon) because he's very dependent on them and I feel he needs more variety to choose from.

  10. I'm new, but from experience with this game and other games I think that the thing you need to consider is what faction do you think is the coolest and do you find yourself rooting for when you imagine match ups on the tabletop? If you like Ten Thunders, go with TT. If you like Guild, go Guild. Each faction is workable, and there are very few bad elements in this game. There are some bad match ups, and there are lists you can make where they might not make a whole lot of sense, but on the whole this game is very forgiving so long as you have thought out your force.

But for suggestions for a starting force, if you like Ophelia she's amazing and really workable.  Ulix will be coming out soon, and he brings the hogs to the yard!

  11. I'm planning on running a game in the near future, but I have a question I cannot find answered in the fluff and was wondering if you guys could point me in the right direction.

Malifaux has a sun, so would it be considered a sunny place during the day? At night, are there alien constellations staring back at people or a void? The sky is blue? Does the world always feel dim, or if you are wandering the bad lands will you be burnt by the sun?

  12. My problem with it is that I like mass combat games. I am a historian, and I love researching famous battles and reading about how units were deployed and fought each other. Initially I was drawn to Warhammer because it played out like those battles, though it slowly changed over time. I liked seeing a battle line of enemy units advancing on my position, or trying to outflank my opponent as big groups of soldiers engaged each other and fought to the death.

I get that skirmish sized games are what's in now, but what about people like me who liked mass combat games? Saying "oh just go to another game system" is not solving the problem. I could go play Pike and Shotte, Johnny Reb, or Kings of War but that's not what I want to do which is play Warhammer Fantasy Battles.
