I'm a pretty competitive gamer, and I like Hans. Obviously at 9 points (with Scout the Field) he's not an auto-take, but I find him making it into a lot of my lists. He's good in Guard the Stash (he ignores them with googles), Extraction, and Interference. Basically any strat where he's good in a corner, and you can predict where the opposing crew will end up.
Also, I think of how many annoying totems there are in the game. Like Lost Love, Copy Cat Killer, or Primordial Magic. It is nice to be able to delete a key minion or peon turn one. Or to one shot a pigapult, which can really hamper a gremlin player's plan. Pretty money at stopping the rat cycle if you face Outcasts too, since he can single shot the obedient wretch.
Obviously all these scenarios require you to ditch a card for focus, then focus as a (1) then shoot. They also require at least 1 severe in hand. So it is a pretty expensive exercise, but it can be pretty game changing if done turn 1, when you don't generally need to have an amazing hand otherwise. After his one turn kill, I find that I generally just focus and shoot things with him, sometimes ditching a low card to get a suit I want.
Lastly, with outcasts I find that I take hunting party almost always. As an enforcer, Hans is pretty good at killing hard to reach or hidden peons/minions so he can be pretty key at getting you that third hunting party point.
Is Hans + Trapper better than double trapper? I don't know, as always with Malifaux is depends on the schemes, the board, and your opponent. But I wouldn't go so far as saying that a trapper is always better. That being said, I almost always include at least 1 trapper, whereas Hans is scenario specific.

I am more than excited to announce the first ever Malifaux event at the Crossroads GT.
For those with no prior knowledge, Crossroads is a long running Fantasy event that has recently expanded to accommodate more games. The Malifaux tournament will run from March 5-6 and will be a 2-day event. There is enough room for 30 players, maybe more, and will be 5 games.

A couple of times it seemed as though you were doing pull the void on Tara's second activation. I don't think you are allowed to use it if there are no models left to activate. Unsure how that works with unburying since it is a chain activation.
Otherwise, a great report. Totally different to how I play Tara, but seems very effective!

These are all standard deployment and....... flip a card prior to the game black (black joker, crows, tomes) plays reconnoiter, red (red joker, masks, or rams) plays stake a claim.
Pairings for the next round are up-
Long Island 1
Long Island 2
NuBrand
Arcana
The Only Game in Town
Basement Jacks
South Jersey
Maplewood
Tabletop Games
Enter the Realm
-
Yeah the top 3 people in our club can't make this event. I also think that the top 2 people would be cool, but we've spoken about that before.

I made this a bit easier to read in case anyone was having trouble.

Ok, I think I understand this. But it is a bit confusingly written.

I think that Drool Bucket and Kadeton make really good points. I like Von Schill a fair amount. Unlike other masters, I have a pretty set core Von Schill that operates very reliably (all the usual suspects, Hannah, Trapper(s), librarian(s), Lazarus or Strong arm, etc). I really like him against Neverborn, and he can do a number on Ressers as well. Universal armor and good guns is great, while ignoring pulses and blasts occasionally screws people. They may have fewer activations, I usually run around 7ish, but you don't lose too many activations as the game progresses due to the amount of healing available. For example, there have been games were I have lost only 1 or 2 models due to steam trunk healing, librarians, and 'not really but exactly the same as' hard to kill. Also you can make abominations if you want to up that number.
Usually I play Von Schill in tournaments if no master comes to mind as being especially great in a strategy or scheme. He's a great master to have in your pocket during a tournament because most people gear towards Levi/Jack/etc when you declare Outcasts, so you can game that a little bit.
Von Schill himself is only lackluster if you expect him to punch above his weight. Passively he does a lot for the crew with engage at will and legend to live up to. Augmented Jump can really catch people off guard and allows him to leap frog to juicier models pretty easily. The min damage in the crew is pretty high which offsets his knife a bit (and Schill's gun is min dam 3, that's pretty great). Cracked is a great trigger.
All that being said I find that he plays pretty linearly so I can't play a lot of games in a row with him without getting a little bored. However, I tend to prefer casting/support masters.

Chris, Weakland is more alcoholic than discerning. So not sure type matters

I am in, really looking forward to it.

There are a lot of fun options that you can do with Pariah of Bone. Belles are ace (though dead doxies are anchors!). Yin makes your already powerful attacks ridiculous. A great way to ensure that whatever you want dead dies. Sybelle is pretty powerful.
But yes, pariah of iron is much more common for good reason.
-
Even if you dislike Von Schill himself, the box has a lot of really useful stuff. I would say 90% of my lists have either the trapper or the librarian, in fact I think I used the trapper in every single one of my adepticon lists. The specialist is also useful if you know you are going to be facing ressers. The fact that you get a master on top of that is really just icing on the cake.
Additionally, I like running the more tricksy masters, and thought that Von Schill wasn't going to do that for me. But I've actually found that I really love using him and his crew, usually end up running him at least once a tournament. He is a super solid counter to most Neverborn lists.
Kadeton's advice is very solid.

I find that Void Wretches make their way into many of my outcasts lists. Such a nice little scheme runner, relatively fast, incorporeal and can have pretty baller defense. What's not to like!
The Nothing Beast I mostly play with Tara only, I haven't felt the need to include him in other crews.
-
I suppose that's true. I haven't tried the DMs at all, I haven't painted them yet, so was intentionally not using them before adepticon. Certainly going to try them now. They seem really solid, I've been enjoying Tara with just 2 upgrades (though was somewhat not seriously considering scramble. . .).
I get your argument Spiraling, however a friekorspman is 5 pts, has unimpeded, a good gun, and a good attack. Just not the bury. I don't really take all that many ronin.
-
I played 5 games with Tara this weekend, 4 as a resser and 1 as an outcast. I didn't take any of these upgrades and found it pretty alright, didn't feel like I was missing anything.
I think Dead of Winter is good, but when are you taking more than 1 Death Marshal? Are they really worth the 7 pts? (Even if you take two, are they worth 6.5?)
-
I've played my last 2 games without the place, and Tara hasn't died yet. I didn't miss it, but going to try some more games. One game I ran her with survivalist instead because assassinate was on the board, but it never came up.
-
Yeah if people go for her, she's not hard to take down. But she's usually behind whatever it is that she just unburied. I think going for Tara is a mistake, because with eternal journey she has an emergency button, and she's usually not the most damaging piece on the board.
-
I've been using Tara pretty exclusively as of late, and have to agree with Spiraling Cadaver's assessment of Karina. I generally don't use a lot of soulstones with Tara, sometimes for defense but very rarely are opponents fixating on Tara herself, so using stones for the crow unbury is not a big deal. It's also the only suit that she ever needs. I have started to run 5-6 stones with her though, whereas before I was content with the 4 she comes with.
I generally activate Karina late in the turn, so if I still have a high crow I'll summon. If not, then it's still a fine 5 point investment for me. Especially because I love the added flexibility that access to the students gives you. I recently won a game with a well placed student of steel. He (she? it?) really turned the game for me.
