You might want to try Gatorboard or Gatorfoam Board which is a little tougher the traditional paper foamboard... it usually has wood or plastic layers sandwiched around foam; it paints smoothly and cleanly and can be cut on the 45 or cut like Gusiado mentioned with a rabbet joint to make clean sharp edges.
