  1. Generally I just mix it as I go. It was a base of off white. Then I washed with a maroon shade of red very lightly in the low areas. I then washed very thinly with sepia shade from Vallejo. I then mixed elf flesh with an olive drab color and lightened with off white and grey each time I added a new layer. It was very trial and error. Add green and light grey but to give it the dead look death world forest and storm vermin fur mixed in can add that grey green dead flesh.

  2. Well I still haven't decided on Yan Lo's or Chiaki's color scheme. I don't want it to be too matchy matchy, although a Red robe over the blue robe underneith would probably look fitting. I might do the olive over red or olive over blue.

Izzy looks great, picking out all those rivets really makes him pop.

I feel like the red on Toshy is a little flat, that may be a camera thing though.

All in all they do look very good though.

Thanks, yeah I think Toshiro is a little flat. The depth of cloth on the shirt around his shoulders and back is not very raised, so I might go back and highlight it with a lighter read to bring out some depth.

  3. Well I've been busy again, and finished Izamu last night. I've still got to finish the base, but the armor is done. I'm keeping with the theme of red armor that is worn and tattered along with the Ashigaru. I've also just finished Toshiro. I might mess with Toshiro a little bit more, but for now he's done.

  4. Well seeing as the Friekorps are special forces, don't think of them as your average grunts. A lot of special forces are built to be nimble and sustainable as far as fitness goes, not raw strength. It's more of an endurance thing. So the 5'7-5'9 height is probably the norm for special forces IRL. Remember, for every pound you are, you have to carry that much more around, so you burn that much more energy simply moving. I'm thinking Bruce Lee build. Smaller, nimble, insane endurance, lean muscle and quick on his feet type of build for your average Freikorps.

The dude that wears the strong-man suit is probably not going to be your average special ops man. Because he probably doesn't have to carry aroudn his own weight as much, and the suit does the heavy lifting, he can be one of the genetic abnormalities with the 1000lb leg press and the 600lb bench press ability. He's going to be strong because the suit would probably amplify that strength, but he's going to need to be a massive dude to just carry around the suite when it is static. I mean look at Kane(WWE) Glenn Thomas Jacobs. He's 7' 324lbs. That's a giant person compared to your average US Ranger.

Average US ranger is 5'9" 174lbs.

I'd say the Strongarm suit is a tiny bit exaggerated, but exaggerated to prove the point. He's bringing the guns to the knife show.

Now as far as the plastic aspect... yeah I don't like the plastic that is used in these miniatures. My Ashigaru in the Masters of the path had his leg bent at about 30 degrees off of where it should because the box was slightly crushed. Well I bent it back and it didn't snap. It does have some flex to it without snapping too easily, but at the same time, it is still plastic so it just doesn't take much to break it. I'm not sure how I'll transport the plastics yet... I do actually like the tube conversions better than the plastic anyway. Just looks that much more diesel.

  5. Actually I've seen this used on larger terrain to add that "rocks jutting out of the ground" effect. Find some Pine bark, and split it. It's like 10-20 layers depending on how large the piece of pine bark is. Cut it/sand it to whatever you want. Once primed it can resemble metamorphic type rock.

This is for what looks like a Diarama, but you should get the gist on how it would look once painted:

    Edit:

    Here's a more model-centric version:

  6. Almost done with Justice crew. The Judge has no base, so I didn't put him in the picture but he's almost complete. I've got to just highlight Lady J's red-tones on the sword scabbard and her shirt to make it pop a little bit more. Then I'll be doing several layers of dullcote and finish basing with some grasses/tufts to give it a more arid landscape look.

I have to dullcote my punk zombies too. I've found some "undead samurai" online and I'm waiting to see what the models look like. I might use these guys with others, and use those with Yan Lo, my next crew. I really enjoy painting Resurrectionists a lot more. I'm not sure why... I think the models just have more character. At least the models I own.

  7. Fantastic Yan Lo crew. Did you use some pre-existing resin bases or were they completely custom? I really like your "rugged landscape" feel to the bases.

Edit* Also what bits do you mean to convert the samurai punk zombies with?

  8. I will be holding a demo of Malifaux on 4/9/2013, starting at 7 PM until 10 PM.

    The event will be at:

    FTW Games

    13176 Midlothian Turnpike

    Midlothian, VA 23113

If you can't make this week, I will be trying to run demos every other week depending on my or the shops schedule/events.

Also for other times you can contact me directly through the forums and we can arrange a time at your convenience.

  9. Finished Lord Chompy bits, next up will be the Alps, Daydreams, and Stitched together.

*edit Forgot to mention, but the base top part or the "stones" are just small balls of sculpey pushed onto aluminum foil next to each other after an indentation was made overtop of the base. I have all of my crew on similar bases, and the process took me approximately 1.5 hours to do them all.

I used the "normal" firmness. If I had to choose again, I would go with the extra firm. Once kneaded and warmed up with your hands, it gets almost too soft.

  10. Hi All,

I'm Chris. I was introduced to Malifaux by some gamers at a game shop in Richmond, VA. It turns out there aren't that many active gamers, but I'm looking to get more people involved and active. I thoroughly enjoy painting the miniatures, and playing Malifaux. My current crews are the Vik's, Seamus, McMourning, Lilith and The Dreamer. Hopefully I can get some games going in Richmond and get more people involved in Malifaux!
