  1. I'm not assigning negative motovations, the people who are being so negative ... well ... have negative motovations.

Its a drawing. Its not the officially released plastics and even if it was, a sculpt your not particularly happy with IS NOT THE END OF THE WORLD THAT PEOPLE ARE MAKING IT OUT TO BE OMG AARRRGGHHH!!!.

If you don't like the sculpt when its released, don't buy it, that's absolutely fine.

But what I was actually commenting on was a negative vibe that has begun to appear in various posts in general, as well as specifically this one, regarding new Malifaux 2.0.

I just think that negativity BEFORE GETTING TO SEE THE ACTUAL PRODUCT (emphasis here is mine and intended) is a little bit over the top and is typical of the modern internet where every little thing IS THE END OF THE WORLD!!!

Dude, isn't it better and more fair to let somebody know what you think before things are written in stone, that is until the miniature is released? And being critical isn't the same thing as being negative is it? I'd say having a critical debate about things is rather positive. I'm not saying everything that everyone who didn't like these pictures has written in this thread is constructive, but neither is everything written by those who do like the picture.

  2. I must say, apart from my thoughts on Lady J, the judge looks kind of cool (dynamic pose and cool hat) and the scales of justice could be quite cool (the picture is small and all though). I'm not so hyped by the DM though, much of it due to their poses, but also because of their burning heads (it looks a bit too obviously supernatural/monstrous). That is except for the one kneeling, that one looks pretty cool actually and somehow his burning head just works for me...

  3. However, everyone relax, calm down, if you don't like a model the world doesnt end, just go ahead and grab yourself the current metals ones, and if you don't like those either move along and choose another crew or play the crew anyway for the fun of doing so. Its a hobby, not life and death here.

It's enough "life and death" for you to care anyhow ;) As for the negativity about Malifaux 2.0, I'm super exited about it!

I mean, if your worst argument is skimpy clothing, it's not the end of the world.

Check out the Anima miniature game if you want to see skimpy - the miniatures do not have a lot of clothing, but if the sculpts are well done, and the poses are dynamic, I dont mind skimpy.

And this is coming from a girl :P

For me it's not so much about the skimpy clothes as about the serious lack in diversity in the ways women are portrayed in miniature games (and in the media/entertainment-world in general) compared to men. And that you are a girl does little to change that.

  4. In This Thread: The annual complaint about the exploitation of fictional female characters, and the likelihood of whether or not fighting in high heels in a world of living 10' teddy bears is realistic.

It's not like fictional characters are an phenomenon isolated from the "real world" is it? Apart from that, "the exploitation of fictional female characters" more often than not makes them look rather silly, unimaginative and boring imo. Some diversity would be ace non the less

  5. This Lady J makes me disappointed and a little "sad". What I've always loved with Malifaux is that they first of all got plenty of female miniatures and second that many of the female miniatures actually look as if they are brought to the table to fight not strutting along a fashion runway or grinding themselves against a metal pole (OK, there were plenty of those before as well but in relation to others I'd say wyrd has been doing OK).

But this new Lady J "now with even less clothes, come and see!" gets me a bit worried. And whats up with high heels on female fighters!!? This whole "women can be strong and sexy/cute" starts to get a little old imo (pssst women can, just as men, be colorful characters without being forced to look sexually attractive to the opposite sex).

  6. Rusty Alyce - She does look a bit plain and not so much as the somewhat unbalanced loony of a killer which I've always imagined her to be. Now she looks more like some shy goth-girl (I'm thinking something more in line with Mad Donna from Necromunda but more girly and not necessarily as sexualised).

Desolation Engine - It looks at bit too caveman-ish to fit my taste tbh and doesn't have that bizarre look of it's smaller cousins (the SPAs that is, which I honestly just LOVE!).

Ashes and Dust - I'm sorry but it kind of look like a turd with claws, if it were prettier I'd bought it already. I've seen some great scratch-builds of it though, where it looks more like a whirlwind which I believe is the way to go. The ashen core looks quite good and the dust storm is OK but the big blob isn't much of a favorite.

I don't have a problem with Leveticus though, I really like his sculpt as a matter of fact! And the Hollow Waifs does look a bit like some 80's early 90's new-romantic fan girls but look OK.

  7. Well thank's dear friend!

Well, I painted it late last night, had no real plan other than to create this grayish colour with a blue-purpleish tone and just did what seemed apropriate as I painted along. So what I'm trying to say is, I'm not entirely sure ;) .

But It's good you ask because then I get a reason to write it down. I used GW colors only and did something along these lines:

    - First stage is a solid layer Deneb Stone mixed with Space Wolf Gray in a.. say 3/1 ration plus a drop of Airbrush Thinner and some good old tap-water (you dont want a blue color at this stage, just a "paler" Deneb and it should be quite thin).

    - Then I washed it with Ogryn Flesh which was followed by another wash of watered down Leviathan Purple (maybe 2-ish parts water to 1 part Leviathan).

    - At the third stage is I went over all raised areas with the DS/SWG-mix.

    - Then, I don't know how to describe it, but I kind of washed the mini in the DS/SWG-mix as well, only small parts at a time and as soon as I applied the "wash" I took a brush to suck up all the paint in the recesses. This is to make smoother transitions from the recesses to the raised areas, but it will also help dulling the warmth of the washes. There might be other ways to do this but I find this way easy and quick.

    - And then I actually drybrushed (I seldom use this technique) the skin in the same DS/SWG-mix as well, until I got enough definition on all the raised areas as well as a pale skin tone.

    - After the drybrushing I washed the skin in water down Asurmen Blue (1 part wash to 3 parts water, kind of)

    - And finally I added more SWG to the DS/SWG-mix and finished with two stages of highlights, with a bit more SWG at every stage.

I don't know if that description made anyone wiser but if anything is unclear I'm happy to fill you in if anyone are interested!

---------- Post added at 02:14 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:29 PM ----------

I believe I'll stick to this skin-tone, It's quick and somewhat easy and I rather like it. It makes them look dead and lifeless but with an supernatural twist (or so I believe, If anyone have any ideas of improving the skin, by all means drop a message).

But now when I'm thinking about how to paint all their open wounds etc I ask myself "what color will their "blood" be?". I believe Leveticus is somewhat less messy than McMourning so I imagine him emptying his corpses of blood in some orderly manner and then putting them in formaldehyde to prevent them from rotting (which also makes the tissue quite colorless and grayish). Then he can conduct his experiments without rushing them too much. When he reanimates them I imagine Leveticus injecting his creations with some foul liquid of sorts, which has given my SPA's a purple tone.

But what color is this foul liquid? I'm thinking dark purple, almost blue... Anyone got some suggestions? I'd love to hear them!

  8. Ok, so I thought I'd make a contribute to this thread, I'm supposed to be a co-author after all *wink*. I got a little burnt out from painting my spa's, I just couldn't get that skin tone to match my taste, so took a "little" break from it! But here I am again with my most recent attempt, I call it the "formaldehyde look", the picture ain't that great but it will give you a general idea :) !

    C&C are always welcome!

  9. Im also sorry to dissapoint you two But there will be no cowboy hats on the puppets :)

    :bawling:

Thanks guys, I'm just not sure about what colors to glaze with. I tried blue to make the skin seem paler but that did not do any good, I might try yellow as you suggests Balefirestorm though I believe the flesh-color already got a lot of yellow in it, although it might not show against the purple wash. I mean, it do believe it does look good as it is, its just that I'm not a 100% about it and since its not really what I was going for in the first place I cant seem to simply give it a rest... I have however tried a third approach (well more like a sixth or seventh approach actually, it's the third that you are going to see) which looks more like what I wanted it in the first place, I'll see if I'm able to post an Image of it later today. Though painting it was a journey between hope and despair... Soon ill just paint everything gold/bronze, wash it with devlan mud and claim that they are a bunch of those "human statues" that's common in some places :D

And about those jeans, they are painted in the simplest way possible, I'm almost ashamed :D. I've just painted Space Wolves Gray on a white undercoating and washed it with Asurmen Blue, and that's it! I wish the skin was as easy ;)

I'm looking forward to seeing the next update from you two, that will be great!

  10. Thanks for the feedback guys! Nice to hear thar you like what you see! I'm quite happy with it myself but, and now you might want to tell me to go to... well a very warm place beneath out feet populated by red-skinned fiends with horns and a sadistic approach to life... for being so anal about the flesh color. But I'm a little worried that they doesn't look very (un)dead, that they look to much alive. The minis themselves sure speaks their language, but does the paintjob do anything to enhance this? I'm leaning towards another round of some good old pain-stripping for these fellas and then do it all over again!

  11. Shockwave - regarding the dolls you can try and add some small detail (more than the colour) from the specific faction. Like a cowboy hat for the guild, some kind of arcane tatoos for the arcanists?

You mean as if the dolls were meant against that faction, as a woodoo doll?

I've been painting the flesh on my second SPA, will post some photos of it tomorrow!
