  1. Greetings to you all.

On Sunday, May 18th, The Game Gamut will be hosting its first fully organized Malifaux event.  That's right, a new store brought into the fold of Malifaux.  To celebrate this occasion, I will be hosting an afternoon of multi-player games using the special scenarios from the Wyrd Chronicles.  Winning is not important, just come on down and have some fun.  New players and old are welcome.  There will be a raffle to hand out something (or things) nice.  Everyone who comes will get a ticket, and other tickets will be handed out for any reason I and the store owner can think of.

Don't have a crew?  No problem.  Loaner crews will be on hand for those looking to give the game a try.  Not really sure of the rules?  No problem again.  Each table will strive to have at least one experienced player to help out with rules questions and playing tips.

Fee?  What fee.  Show up, have fun, possibly win something.  Your presence and enjoyment is all we ask.

So, once again, The Game Gamut in Victor, NY will be holding a day of multi-player games on Sunday, May 18th, starting at noon and going until the store owner kicks us out.

    Details:

    When: May 18th at Noon

    Where:  The Game Gamut

    86 W Main St

    Victor, NY  14564

Feel free to contact me with any questions.

  2. You should check out this thread:  http://wyrd-games.net/community/topic/100508-malifaux-terrain/?hl=ratty#entry721703

It has a pretty in depth discussion on how to set up a table for Malifaux, including some picture examples.  If you follow this process, you can likely figure out what you need from there.

As for where to expand specifically, you have a pretty good diversity going already.  I would suggest maybe looking in to some other severe terrain options (such as swamps, bogs, rocky patches, etc.) just to give you some terrain to slow up melee models a bit while opening up fire lanes as well.  It also looks like your large terrain collection (buildings and such) is pretty solid, so probably not much is needed in that direction.  You can never go wrong with more trees.  They don't have to be on forest bases.  Lone trees are great for Malifaux.

    Hope this helps.

  3. So, my locla players reminded me of something we did a while back.  Basically, it is just another illustration of what Ratty has already done, just using real world terrain rather than Vassal.

First up is a river board we designed at one point:
    Condensed to 50%

    Spread out

    Then a farmland type board:
    Condensed to 50%

    Spread out

Both cases have a variety of terrain types.  In retrospect, the farm board could have used a little more cover in the center, but it was still fun.

Just tonight, one of our players started setting up a board.  He was apparently board and in a groove, because he just kept adding terrain.  We started joking that if we left him alone, he would end up covering the entire board.  We weren't far off.  The board ended up roughly 90% covered with a mix of swamps, hills, and trees.  The guys who played on it had a lot of fun, although it would not have been well suited to tournament play.  Just goes to show you that many different ideas can all be workable.

  4. Great work Ratty.  I would reinforce the value of 0 Ht terrain.  You use the bone piles for it, which is a good example.  But this category can also include rivers, swamps, plowed fields, etc.  Really good for severe terrain without granting cover or blocking LOS.  Can be combined with other pieces easily enough.  A swamp with a shack, a field with some crates.  I like to emphasize this because often times, people who are frustrated/unsure/questioning about terrain are coming from other game systems where Ht 0 terrain is essentially unheard of.  It makes a big difference in how much coverage you can get on a table.

  5.

I have reached a new achievement: I have all of my models for one gaming system completed: built, painted, and based...now to buy some more...

    Guild: 8 models (1 master), 33 soulstones, 100 % painted.

    Resurrectionists: 6 models (1 master), 33 soulstones, 100 % painted.

    Arcanists: 17 models (2 masters), 91 soulstones, 100 % painted.

    Neverborn: 9 models (1 master), 48 soulstones, 100 % painted.

    Gremlins: 6 models (1 master), 33 soulstones, 100 % painted.

    No Outcasts, 10 Thunders.

It helps when your number count is low.  At one point I was 98% complete.  Took me two weeks to pull my numbers down to 54%.  Now, it takes me roughly three models completed to boost a percentage point.

  6. Where are you living?  I ask because it is often helpful to find other players or even henchmen in your area.  Local help can be much more useful than forum help.  Not that forum help is bad, but local help can do things like let you borrow crews to try, walk you through rules and such, and generally give you a reason to keep at it.

  7. I have the good fortune to be a henchman for a play group that blends the two nicely.  We play predominantly fluff/theme list, not because we feel we need to, but because we like the fluff so much we want to emulate it.  But, we are competitive within our games.  Sure, our list may not be ultra streamlined, but we still try to optimize to some extent, and we still scrabble for points as best we can.  On the other hand, we all seem to enjoy a good thrashing from time to time.  We very much have the mindset of, "well, my luck has gone to crap, lets see how epically bad this will get and laugh the whole way."  All this while trying for the come back.

At one point we had a player who was more of the "streamline super list" variety.  He was a good guy, and fun to hang around.  Most of us enjoyed playing him as long as we didn't have to do it too many times in a row.  The only real issue came when he had trouble toning down lists for newer or struggling players.  (We have had a few players that no matter how long they play, they just didn't get it, and got frustrated when stomped.)  He knew he had this problem and tried dealing with it as best he could.

As had been said, you can be any genre of player (insert whatever label you choose), and still be a dick.  Or you can do the same and be fun.  Personally, I will play any type of player if they know how to make the game fun, not just for themselves, but for both players.  This doesn't mean toning things down or playing harder.  This means have fun, and realize that it is a game.  Not life.  Don't take it so seriously that any wrong moment can bring you down.  Players who joke about bad hands, or laugh when their opponent flips three severes on a double negative; these are the players I like.  Doesn't matter the list building involved.  Play the game as a game and its all good.

  8. Bypass ebay.  Set a price, and offer them up on here.  I bet you would get a taker.

Incidentally, when one of my locals heard you were contemplating stripping your hungering darkness, he suggested you should sign the bottom, and send it to him, and he would send you an entirely new crew box.  He doesn't even care if it is finished.

  9. Every once in a while I get inspired and just know what colors I want to use.  Sometimes I just use trial and error to figure out a combination (usually on a test model before the actual model.)  But really, most of the time I'm like Mako in that I look at color combinations in the world and think, "Hmm, that would look good on xxx model."  Having kids helps because their toys and cartoons often have all kinds of odd combos that work.

  10. Well, I've got the over 50% part (barely), but I have yet to have 100% in a faction.  I could do it in Gremlins, but I wouldn't have a usable crew as all the Gremlins I have were originally bought for outcasts as Mercs.  I've burned out on guild after our recent league, and am a little fried on painting in general.  Not completely, but enough that my output has slowed considerably (after a brief surge post league.)  So much stuff to paint.

Sadly, as should be obvious to anyone with any math sense, the higher your models count, the harder it is to increase your percentages.  A single model no longer moves me a percentage point.  But I do love having the tracker.  It has actually helped to motivate me, and has helped me curb my spending a bit.  (Of course, I say that after buying 2 new avatars, a dreamer box, and a few blisters, all in the last two weeks.)

  11. Well, our local events have struggled with attendance in the past.  But, I may have a solution for this.  You see, one of our local stores has offered up some LE models as prize support.  I in turn have determined how they will be rewarded.

So, on Saturday, June 21st, Millennium games will be hosting a standard 3 round, 50 SS Gaining Grounds tournament.  Registration will begin at 10 am, with the first round to start around 10:30.  There will be a break for lunch after the first round.  Cost of entry will be $10.

Now for the exciting part.  IF there are 10 participants on the day of the event, a Nightmare edition Tara Box set will be in the prize pool.  If we reach 15 participants, the Tara box will be replaced by a Nightmare edition Teddy.  If by some miracle we hit 25 participants, both will be in the prize pool.

So please, come join us for the day.  We would like to see a lot of people.  Hopefully you can help with that.

  12. We have settled in to Second edition.  We have take a long break from competitive play.  Now, it is time to ease our ways back in.

On Sunday, April 27th, Pair A Dice games will be hosting a story encounter tournament.  Three rounds of plays, 90 minutes each, starting at 12:30.  Each round will have a set story encounter from the rulebook.  Attackers and defenders will be determined by the TO (me).

This is a low stress event.  While winning and losing do matter to some extent, they will not determine the prize support.  Prizes will be handled in a raffle format.  Each player will gain a ticket for joining, and other tickets will be handed out during the day.  The winner for the day will receive a trophy to show off for bragging rights.

Entry for the day is a mere $5.  "Special" soulstones will be provided free of charge.  (If you don't know what my "Special" stones are, feel free to ask me.)

    So, come join us.

  13. Our area has had a small league running for the past few months.  As part of the league, we were expected to paint an entirely new crew totaling at least 75 Soulstones.  These are the final 5 crews.  At this point, we would like the opinion of the rest of the Wyrd community.  Help us to determine the best crew.

Voting will be open for 1 week.  Votes are remaining hidden so as not to skew the results.  The winner will be announced next Monday.

Thank you everyone for your help on this.  Feel free to comment below, or in the gallery at: http://wyrd-games.net/community/gallery/album/76-final-league-crews-314/
