  1. I've played arcanists probably a dozen times in m2e with just the book 1 masters. I find myself taking the rider in most crews since wave 2 as it adds a lot to any crew.

It is my opinion that the mech rider is great for helping you get your objectives done and scoring high. There are better models to disrupt/deny/kill your opponents crew than her. And the mech rider is not the first model to make any list. I would rather take Howard with Ramos and snow storm with raspy before I see about fitting in the mech.

All riders are good IMO. All are worth it for 12ss. They are really hard to kill late game but not impossible - just get creative. Not just pulses or blasts, but decapitate triggers are great and also models that deny defensive triggers to stop the damage reduction. Or just paralyze them.

So my conclusion. Riders are awesome, I find mech rider hard not to include in a competitive list for Ramos and raspy benefits too. They are not a must however and as my opponents have learnt to deal with them they lose some of their might. I am just glad that you get something good for your 12 stones.

  2. I've found the judge great so far. His combo attack is cool and I find getting it off not the arduous.

He has been epic in a couple of games, including one where Lady J was paralysed for 2 turns - it was up to the judge to go for the win. And the other night he smacked down Howard Langston. So I'm happy with him.

So far all the henchmen for the guild have impressed me.

  3. My vote, and I hope Wyrd will listen to this, is to have the public Beta, then release everything simultaneously, either later this year or early next, I'd rather see it all together.

Yes Wyrd please go for a simultaneous release. I would happily wait for an additional 6 months or however long it takes to do a full release - not piecemeal

  4. two comments on having to buy new cards.

Second, as others have stated, you know what you are getting into when you play miniature games. New editions come along and four years is very reasonable lifespan... and when new editions come along a lot of secondary game play accessories have to be purchased, and cards are just part of Malifaux's.

I don't want to be picky nor do I want to be antagonistic - but my friend this is a false assumption that someone who plays a miniatures game will innately know that regular rule updates/changes occur.

I know people that Malifaux is the first minis game they have played and haven't experienced the regular reboot and additional costs that more experienced gamers like you and I have through other systems. Someone going into a FLGS today who buys a crew, the rulebook and maybe another book will not necessarily know these changes will be coming.

For the record, I am looking forward to the rules updates - and hopefully the first model released will be aHoffman ........ but that's for another thread.

  5. That is kind of unfair. The game has been out for well over four years now. We're getting a needed overhaul in some aspects and a lot of new goodies as well.

I am just hoping that they release all of the character stats revised and edited via PDF once the new rules come out. This would make it for people like me, who have five core books at home (yes even 1.0) more worthwhile.

Or we get seperate faction books. That woudl work as well, in my opinion. One big fatty book with current models in it.

You don't have to convince me to invest in Malifaux - yes I have book 1.0 as well, along with every other book releases, the complete guild faction (except aHoff obviously) and well into collecting 3 other factions now. I'm pretty darn committed to Malifaux.

Just concerned on the additional costs for replacement cards instead of spending it on models and I don't want to print off cards myself as I can't stand inferior copies.

I also think it is a fair concern to have that a book will be valid for more than a year. Even GW don't phase books out that fast ;)

  6. Hmmmm, with over 100 models in my collection and new models rolling in still I am worried about the cost of new cards. I'm not looking forward to spending $50+ on updating cards.

I also am curious and maybe this has been answered, but my book 4 (less than 4 months old) will still be current right? It won't be useless in 5 months right?

Apart from that, yes please streamline the rules and love the idea of new faction/masters, frequent FAQs

  7. So what about if I rapidfire a melee that includes just one of my models and an enemy model. The first shots hits my friendly model and kills it, can I then continue with shots two and three into the enemy model. The current ruling in our group is no - as they say that the friendly model became the target and you cannot therefore shoot at the other target - even though there are two shots still to come and the target is now no longer in melee.

I however think that the declared target initially was the enemy model so why not continue the shots? Any thoughts?

(There is obviously an inherit bias in my question)

  8. I'm no expert with the Pale Rider but I found that the dodging in and out of cover shooting is cool but what I also enjoyed was the ability to shoot someone who is trying to hit you in melee and then push out of melee up to 10" with his (2) action (can't remember name of it). Very helpful particularly if you have :+fate on the damage and Critical from his stage. Then you can also change your stage to get armour afterwards with your (0).

Cool rules but I also appreciate the sculpt is an acquired taste. I don't mind it myself.

  9. Anyone that says do not buy both boxed sets is obviously forgetting the lure of Malifaux. Those of us brave enough to raise our hands at MA (Malifaux-holics Anonymous) know that in the end the lure of Malifaux will leave you wanting all the models in your faction and possibly several factions. Think long term - support your addiction in the long run - make every dollar count.

  10. Yeah caught red handed bro. Don't fear the dreamer anymore since he was errated.

Try the boxed set with the Executioner tagging along. See how that goes, work out what you are needing then expand the crew.

  11. I don't get the greatness of Austringers.

I tend to agree. I run Perdita mostly and usually chuck one in but I have found to make them really effective requires 2 of them and the drill sergeant but that is 13 ss worth of my crew.

They are great for picking off the last wounds left on people but need to be moved up off the back line - otherwise their double strike at range 12 hardly gets used. And there is no inbuilt :rams in their cb :( :-(

I have found the best use of them is usually psychological. My opponents always cry "Broken" or "OP" when they come out so I use that to my advantage to mess with their plans but generally find they don't actually do too much damage.

  12. Maybe consider getting both Collodi's and Z's boxed sets. Not necessarily because all the models will make an uber-deathstar crew but look to the future. I have already made the mistake of buying a model individually to then later realised that I want the whole boxed set that it comes as part of. Never again!

Now if I start any master, I grab their boxed set and then add some individuals to it that come separate from the boxed sets.

  13. the idea of a kid who unknowingly brings death upon other people through the use of nightmarish creatures is awesome. Plus, how could you go wrong with a demon name "Lord Chompy Bits". :)

The exact same reason that I started with the Dreamer. The fluff is too cool and the names are even better. With his new errata as well, you will have more fun ingame so don't forget to check it out.

  14. The dreamer has just been errated if you by the box set his cards will be wrong, for this reason alone I would steer away from him.

I politely disagree with this. Yes the Dreamer has just been heavily errated and you will (like all Dreamer players) have to adjust your cards and maybe print of pdf when available.

However, it puts any dreamer player in a new position. The ideas for what will work best are not yet known with the Dreamer now that he has been errated. If you are looking for something new for you but also new for the Malifaux community then go Dreamer.

If you want to choose a master that is well known in the Malifaux community and you can look up all the tactics on - then go one of the other Masters.

I personally think it is the most exciting time to play the Dreamer. You never know, you might be the person that works out how to best play the Dreamer under the new rules instead of just reading everyone else's thoughts on how to best play your master. I shelved the Dreamer but have just dusted him off with his changes because of this.

Also, on the topic of difficult to learn masters it is true that some are easier. But essentially for a new player you are going to have to learn all the rules of all your models, plus the main ruleset, plus the rules of the opposition. It is rules heavy. So what are a few extra going to add? I actually found starting with the Dreamer actually limited the number of models I could take (Nightmares) and therefore helped me to learn them. When I did Guild (currently doing) I keep getting too many options and taking new stuff every single game.
