  1. How does the saying go? Luck is when Probability is taken personally.

I too struggle with dice at a level that seems way beyond random. So i tend to table shuffle my Malifaux decks regularly. If you think about the cheating mechanic you basically put a high card on top of a low card, etc. I like to make sure that any clumping goes away.

Keep at it! It really is random. :)

  2. More WarmaHordes mindset. That's pretty much how their recent Journeyman Grow league was structured.

I agree with Spiku though- I don't feel like fixed lists are the way to get new players into Malifaux. It's actually really frustrating one of our local players.

Back on topic. In small games Ophelia's crew can really put out the hurt! I've been on the other side of that and once the activation order is worked out it just smarts! Keep at it!

  3. Just did a demo for a new player on Sunday with this setup. The combo that he liked was Luring a target in. Another Belle would undress for the -2 Def and then Seamus would walk up for the Focused .50 cal shot. Lather, rinse...

  4. Well I think that's just it. I don't like the idea of a "one list" for Colette yet when I try to run something different the feel just isn't there. The "standard" list just clicked for me. Now I've seen some situations (as Calmdown describes) where that list might not be the optimal choice.

Put another way- the Cory/Cassie/Colette list feels more like a Light Cav recon force. Don't get bogged down in one place- stick and move, etc.

It feels like the Performer-style list is more a fireteam / close support platoon. Maybe? On paper it feels like that to me but I've not seem to get the overlaps going. By Overlaps I mean 1 activation to do A, the next activation to do B, etc.

    Thoughts on that..?

  5. And yet ... it's a thing.

...they just want a fair fight.

Beyond that: Malifaux, at least in my experience, tends to attract non-gamer types, the un-hardcore.

+1 on the "bringing new people into the fold" aspect of Malifaux. The game group I play most with has two guys that have NEVER played a miniatures game before in their life. They liked the look of the figs and jumped in. To me this is a huge strength of the game right there.

The other side of the coin always amuses me too. Most "historical" battles were anything BUT a fair fight. The hardcore historical guys think nothing at all about throwing down a 3 to 1 disadvantage scenario and having a ball.

To me- it's the guys in the middle that are the topic. Malifaux has gotten big enough to attract their attention and judgment. To me that's a good sign... :)

  6. The final thing I think is fairly telling, although admittedly anecdotal, is that Seamus seems to be one of the models that really draws people into Malifaux. I've read lots of stories of groups who start because someone finds out about Seamus gets his crew, gets others interested in the game, but then moves on from Seamus as their competitive master of choice once they've learned the game a bit, and to me, that is just a sad story.

    +1

Seamus is a gateway model for Malifaux like Teddy, Kade, etc. I think of all the Masters he is the best convergence of fluff translated into gaming terms. It feels like the game has moved beyond him though. He's a blast to play and a GREAT way to learn the game but as noted, he's soon left behind when the other ADHD options of the game come knocking...

  7. My philosophy too. Been toying with the idea of summoning ikiryo somewhere safe turn 1, healing up kirai, then turn 2 swirling forwards ikiryo and summoning a shikome.

    +1

At the end of the day it's a playstyle thing. Last night in a game there wasn't anything I really needed the Shikome for on Turn 1 so I just went with Ikyrio and healed up to get the additional activation.

In smaller games especially- out activation is so crucial AND still gives you the ability to "upgrade" as you need it that many smaller spirits seem to fit my playstyle better. But I see the appeal of a Shikome screaming up the field on Turn 1. :)

  8. Yeah definitely don't field the list I ran last night against Hamelin.

    Neverborn Crew - 30 - Scrap

Hamelin players should not walk away from the board turn 3 after their crew has been ripped to pieced. Nor should your crew not take a single wound.

Ouch! Well maybe we'll save this one for down the road a bit. Nobody in my area plays Jack at all yet. Ignorance is bliss...

  9. Bring Teddy, and maybe Baby Kade, make sure you include Pandora's Avatar.

    Do not bring:

    Lilitu or Lelu

    Stitched Together

    Insidious Madness

    Doppelganger

    Primordial Magic

    Sorrows

Basically if you want to play a friendly Pandora list you must make sure you don't bring anything that synergizes with her will power mechanics. Even then Pandora can often hold off an entire crew by herself. She might not rock them solo, but she is hard to take down even if there is nothing else left on the table.

Ugh- don't think I can bring myself to bring the Avatar. :( I should clarify- they're not newbs to wargaming for the most part. So a totally powderpuff list isn't necessary.

And I've been meaning to break out Teddy anyway...

  10. This is basically the same way I've gone as well. The foam in the KR bags is softer and seems (in my experience) to be kinder to paint jobs. I've got two of the Battlefoam Malifaux bags and they're very nice but more in the "transport" than "storage" camp of bag.

The cardboard of the KR seemed iffy to me but when you actually get one they're just fine. And they stack much better... :)
