  1. I have started playing Von Shill and have been having some great success with him. 3 games and 3 wins against levi,Sonnia Criid and Lilith.

    My list is:

    Von Schill

    Friekorps Specialist

    Convict Gunslinger

    Misaki

    Taelor

    Jack Daw

    Desperate Merc

It gives me a nice mix of range and close combat with some nice abilities from Jack Daw. The specialist really has been my man of the match in all three games he always kills alot or causes problems. Having him within 6" of von schill is great as it gives him slow to die. Which I have used to either blow up his tanks or to just run him forward to get more enemies in his death blast.

You say you have been having some problems with movement spells. Can I ask which ones, I am guessing you mean lure. Last game I had to face 4 of the neverborn twins which was alot of luring. But most of my models have WP7 and the Friekorps have stubbon which should help. I have also been thinking of adding Hamelin to my crew as an obey would help me get certain models in to position quicker.

For schemes it really depends on which crews I am facing and what my strat is. In the last game I took Kill protege and stake a claim. I was able to complete both which helped win me the game. Kill Protégé is pretty standard as the crew can do alot of damage and most of the time you want to kill the enemies highest ss model anyway. Stake a claim is good with Von Schill being able to jump around, great for last turn claims.

  2. Good interview. I wonder which two minions will be getting the nightmare treatment. My guess is on Teddy.

Will have to start saving if Nightmare editions and avatars are available at Gen con.

A bit disappointed then there wont be fleshing out the special forces that much. I feel each of the henchmen could really do with a few more minions. But I guess that will be the next book.

  3. If you look at this in respect of the potential downside to having a ranking system and the potential downside to not having a ranking system I think you'd be hard pressed to build a case for one.

I agree with this 100% I just dont see the point in the risk. I already feel there is a divide in the forum because of this thread. Every game I have seen that has individual rankings had been worse because of it. I have never seen a game improve because of rankings.

If we go ahead with rankings I really think we need to have another look at them in a years time. So once we have had a full year with rankings we sit down and all discuss the impact we feel they have had. There may be none of the doom we are talking about and everything is fine or it may have become a game of pandora vs Hamlin. I suppose the only way to find out now is going ahead with it. But it seems to already have brought alot of tension to the community so its really going to have to amazing to make it seem like a good thing for the community.

I know if the rankings came into play before my next tournament this summer I will be bring a much stronger list than the ones I have been using before. Which is odd I know as you already play for prizes and first place without rankings. But there is something about having actually ranking people can look up that makes you want to win alot more.

I also get the feeling this debate has just became " I know you guys have concerns but I like the idea so we are doing it". This thread seemed to be "we have decided" not "hey guys do you think this is a good idea".

So I am just going to sit back now and see how the rankings effect the community for better or worse.

  4. Isn't it also possible that rankings may promote more mid tier lists as there will be rankings for each master you wont need to bring the most uber list to feel you can compete for something.

I can see people wanting to be the best at a certain master but how will this be recorded.

As malifaux really should be played fixed faction not fixed master.

So surely you would only have best in faction not best masters unless you recorded which master each person used for each game.

  5. That is a fair point. I guess I dont have an answer for that example, other than that Mythic did mention ranking is based on best 3 tournament results. I know that is reliant on playing more than 3 a year (is that an issue?).

Alot of people seem to be mentioning that you can play super competitive in 3 tournaments and then take it easy in the rest.

On average how many tournaments do you guys go to each year ?

I have resized that rankings dont matter to me because I doubt I would make 3 or more tournaments a year. I would love to go to more and if they are in London I will be there but once you add up travel and extras for ones further away they get much to pricey for what they are.

So will many people be going to more than 3 a year where in the extras they could take it easy and use a softer list ?

One last point (and I know im a bad example of this!), but how many complete new gamers go to a tournament?...granted they may be facing a certain master the first time, but im guessing most players at a tournament have atleast played the game enough to know the rules and how to use their crews so some extent.

Ok, so a bit of an answer, but I know its not a solid response...

In my last tournament I faced Hoffman and Ramos who I had never faced before. I also used Lucius who I had only used once before and then a bunch of minions (hounds,Ryle, drill sarge) I had never played with. Was great fun :)

  6. Twisting Tigers for outcast would be neat. Something to tie misaki into.

Pinkertons would be awesome for guild crews! Give them Deringers with rng 6 1/2/3 and a shankin knife rng 1 1/2/3

You could give them some sort of intimidation ability and some crowd control then make them relativly cheap on SS

I like the idea but think Guild already have that covered with the Guild Guard. Just being a cheaper version would not be unique enough.

Thought about having Pinkertons in Outcast but the Desperate Merc fills there role.

I am not sure what I would like the guild to have. We have range sorted maybe a few more melee models or some spell casters.

Judging from Book 2 I think its pretty certain that the new Outcast Henchmen or Master will have something to do with Ten Thunders and the Three Kingdoms. So here is hoping for some kind of Opium themed crew.

  7. I support the use of RHQ for event tracking and higher level statistics; but in terms of individual rankings, I cannot stress my concern highly enough. Of course, nothing more has been said so it may be that you have chosen the former rather than the latter. If this is the case, then I thank you for that choice and your efforts. If the latter, then I suppose this counts as an objection.

Warhammer fantasy took a real nosedive in quality at events as soon as the rankings came in to force. Now there may be some who think the game wasn't terribly balanced before this occurred, and while that is true the effect was exacerbated many times over by all the people rushing to show how 'great' they were at warhammer. The effect was so pronounced that when Warmachine and Hordes was given the opportunity to join it was decided that individual rankings would not be used in case the same happened.

Keep Malifaux the fun and sportsman-friendly game it is now, that's my 2-penneth.

Have to agree with everything said here. Hope they handle it like Warmachine and Hordes did and not WFB.

  8. I do have two rules questions though:

    1) I activated Lucius/Drill Sarge/Captain via companion, lets say i activate Captain second in the string of Companion ability. What happens if I used the Captains (0) ability to activate a guardsmen within 6? Does the person in the third companion string activate OR does the guardsmen activate THEN the companion goes last?

    2) This question may seem foolish but does Lucius himself count as elite division? So that my drill sarge (with the right cards) can cast "issue command" on lucius?

    1) The Guardsman would go next after the Captain then the other companioned model.

    2) I believe so. Which also means he can cast Issue command on himself to get an extra walk or strike. Good adding an extra 5 to reinforcements.

  9. Really? From here it looks like you are, you really aren't coming over too well at all.

hmm dont really want to go into this and derail this thread. But did you really just make an account to make that snide little remark?

Look when I am spending around £150 to go to a tournament I just want to get all the facts right. I never said anything mean about any one so sorry if I came did not come across well. But I have to say you are coming across alot worse just making an account to make that remark.

Also, you can check out Malifaux Minions UK on Facebook (page i made for the occasion as it were)

Has all the pictures from the event so you can take a look at the banners. They are SWEEEEEEEEEEET

Just had a look and last year looked like alot of fun. That puppet deck looks amazing in that frame. Think I may have to steal that idea and have it hanging behind my painting desk.

  10. Hi talos

It is officially endorsed by Wyrd with prize support etc and therefore will be the only official GT ran in the UK every year. Last years was very successful

I just noticed that if you Email them and you have enough people and a henchmen present Wyrd will help support your Tournament with prizes so again what makes it a GT ? As wyrd prize support is not exclusive to this tournament.

You say its officially endorsed by Wyrd I see no evidence for this.

As I said before I think this tourny looks great and hopeful I can make it I am just confused how it is a Grand tournament it just looks like any other community tournament.

I am not bashing the tournament I am just confused.

Another question, last year I saw you had sportsmanship points and painting points. Do these points go toward your finally ranking or just used for best painted or best sportsmanship awards ?

  11. I have been meaning to post up my results of the tourament I went to.

Here is a run down of the 3 games. These games were a few weeks ago so so I just wrote down all the bits I could remember.

Here is the 55ss list I took although I actually used the same 35ss list in all games.

    Lucius

    Guild Captain

    3xGuild Guard

    3x Guild Hound

    2x Guild Austringer

    Drill Sarge

    Gov proxy

    Ryle

    35ss list

    Lucius

    Drill Sarge

    2x Guild Guard

    3x Guild Hound

    2x Austringer

    Ryle

My first game was shared Claim Jump against Hoffman. I had never faced Hoffman before and was looking forward to it. It was a good game which could have gone either way. I had the mistake of ignoring the peacekeeper as it did nothing the first few turns only for it to smash through my lines in the last few killing 2 guild guards and a austringer. Ryle was killed before he could do anything by another Ryle. I used Lucius reinforcements to move him forward but did not count for Hoffman machine puppeting his ryle. The Guardian was a pain keeping Hoffman alive, I just could not ping it to death. Hoffman pulse that does 3 dg was brutal and killed my 3 hounds and Lucius. I was able to get my breakthrough scheme but failed hold out. In the end it was 2-8.

Second Game was shared Contain power against Ramos. This was a crazy game. I took the same list I did in the first game. I took Steal Relic and assassinate. Ramos took Holdout and can’t remember the other one. My first turn I moved everything forward while Ramos made spiders and his forces moved up. My Austringer was able to kill his gunsmith before it could do anything which was great. My hounds moved up to charge Ramos next turn and steal the relic. Ryle shot and killed Joss and everything else moved up. His duet did some damage to lucius and then was one hit by a guardsmen thanks to a red joker. The dogs charged ramos but all 3 failed to steal the relic. Ryle moved to charge next turn. Next turn Ramos spider swarm blow up killing Lucius netting him some VPs. My dogs once again failed to steal the relic or do any damage to Ramos. Ryle killed the totem and then failed to do any damage to Ramos. Ramos then held out next turn then the game was called. It was 0-4 in the end. I only lost Lucius but I just could not kill or steal the damage relic from Ramos. 3 turns and around 8 WP duels and Ramos does not lose a single one. Looking back I relize I killed Ramos’s Totem so should have gotten 1 extra VP but it would have made no difference to the game or tournament result. I really wish we had been able to play more than 3 turns as I felt I could easily have killed Ramos, stolen the relic and gotten assassination in the those next few turns. Which would have given me over the 8vp limit.

Third Game was reconnoitre against Sonnia Cridd. I took the same list once again and for schemes Extermination on the witchlings and Kill Protégé which was Nino. Sonnia had treasure hunt and took Stake a claim and grudge on Ryle. First turn everything moved up. I used reinforcement on an austringer to move it up the field it then took a witchling down to 1 wound. Sonnia killed it bring it back as a new witchling but he did damage Nino in the blast. Second turn Nino shot my hounds killing one and bringing one to 1 wound. My hounds then charged one of his austringers. The Guild Guard killed a Witchling and I brought Ryle up the field with reinforcements. Sonnia turned her totem in to a witchling and did a blast on Ryle doing 3 wounds. Turn three, hounds kill a austringer and one moves to charge the next austringer while one attacks a witchling. My two austringers kill Nino getting my some VPs. Ryle kills another witchling and does some damage to Sonnia. Sonnia and his austringer killed Ryle but as it was not a melee attack got no VPs for the scheme. Turn 4 one of my hounds kills the witchling and dies in the process getting my VPs for extermination. The other hound charges the austringer killing him. My Austringers killed Sonnia and my guardsmen and lucius had already moved to the table quaters . I won 8-0.

My models of the day had to be the Guild Hounds.Every game I felted they served a purpose. In my third game they were amazing at killing Austringers.

I had wanted to try the Captain but think Ryle is just better for 1 ss extra. Will need to try out the Drill Sarge a bit more, I tried linking him to Ryle for the push. But its hard to get the plus flip for melee damage as he only links when you walk or at the end of a activation, so you lose it if you charge Ryle.

Two Austringers are awesome. I liked bringing one up to the mid field with reinforcement it gave them a great threat range and allowed me to hit certain models turn 1.

The Guild Guard did not really do much but that was fine, they were they to guard lucius and go do objective stuff. I did use Raise Alarm a few times just to move my backfield Austringer an extra 3 which was useful.

I really enjoyed all three of my games and had a great day. I had never played against Ramos or Hoffman before so that was fun, although some of there powers caught me by surprise. Going up against Sonnia I had much more confidence as I own her and know what all the guild models do, which makes it alot easier. Having 4 austringers on the table was pretty nuts.

I had only used Lucius twice before this tournament so felt I did pretty well. Will be coming back to this thread often to post up my findings on Lucius as I use him in my club's league.

I am thinking of removing the Drill Sarge and adding another Guild Hound.

Oh yea Fate must have been smiling on me all day as I never once had to cheat or use a SS to get off reinforcements or issue command.

  12. Hi talos

It is officially endorsed by Wyrd with prize support etc and therefore will be the only official GT ran in the UK every year. Last years was very successful

B and bs are reasonable and start from £30 a night

Hope to see you there :)

    Cool thanks for your help.

I have just one more question ? What will the crew selection be like. I am hoping Fixed faction, what was it last year?

  13. I have been meaning to see Maelstrom for a while. Pretty sure I can make this but will have to see a bit near the time. Will post it on my club forum to see if I can gather some more support.

A few questions. First what makes it the UK's Grand tournament ? Is it just numbers or is it actually supported by Wyrd ?

Second question how much are the B&B/hotels around Maelstrom and how far are they from the event ?

  14. You cant really judge a master after only playing against him once. I often lose to masters the first time I play them as I dont know all there tricks. Once I have played them a few times they get much easier to beat.

Go back and play Hamlin a few more times. He is hard but there are ways around his tricks you just have to know what he can do.

  15. Ok I will post on the cross forums later today and see if there is any interest. Hopeful everybody is interested and we can bring two teams. As I Lucius player I am laying claim to all of the Cross's Austringers. :)

Painting is a tough choice. I have been in tournaments which give you extra soulstones for having a painted crew. Which has been a nice incentive to get stuff painted (although I still never get everything finished for the tourny) and has not unbalanced the game as it was only 2 ss to use at some point in the 3 games.

I dont think you should get VPs for painting but I do feel there should be a best painted prize. Painting is a large part of the hobby so should be praised but should also be kept separate from the actual game results.I actually really like tournaments where everything has to be painted as they look great but I know people arnt fans.

Not a fan of sportsmenship awards as they are to easy to abuse. Again maybe as its own award but dont make it have an effect on game results.

Hmm proxies are a hard one, I used proxies for guild hounds in my last tournament and nobody had a problem. I think as along as the model looks like what it is proxing and is painted (easier to see ). Also you should only be allowed one proxy, again make it easier to keep track of.

But I feel this will depend on when the tournement is. If the book has just been out for a few weeks and I would say no to book 3 stuff as its to new for everybody to get a look at.

  16. I understand where you are coming from with it being a team game so rules apply to the team. Still not a fan of it but I can see your reasoning. I just fear people with a limited section of models will be turned off.

I will see if the Cross are interesting but of course without a date or location its pretty hard to gather support for a two day event.

Any thoughts on rules for painting ?
