  1. Just finished the first collection of a rather enjoyable comic series called The Sixth Gun, published by Oni Press.

Reason I thought to mention it on here is that it features a Weird West setting. Cursed handguns, hanging trees, zombies and spirit summoning, etc. And a cracking story to boot.

Definitely worth checking out if comics are your thing.

  2. Guess it would be procrastination for me too.

For those who struggle at the basecoat "ass point", why not just skip straight to highlighting on some sections before getting all the basecoats down. I tend to jump all over the place, basically painting the bit I feel like doing next. Maybe it will be some highlighting, maybe I'll go back and re-smooth out the some blends, glaze to a different hue, or basecoat a fresh bit.

That said, I do hit stages where a mini fails to inspire. Happens much less now than it used to though, back when I had a regimen of all basecoats -> all shading -> all highlights.

  3. I've been to London a few times but I've never seen any 80m tall rats.

No, the rats here are only about three feet long. They come out at in numbers at night, which is why the Tube has to stop running at 1am.

(this is sounding suspiciously like an April Fool comment)

    Nice puzzle thread btw Eric.

  4. Lots of different ways to assemble/prep but here's what I do,

Tidying: Usually use a craft knife and clippers to remove obvious flash (bits of excess metal from the moulding process). Then use a small file to eliminate any visible mould lines.

Assembly: Pin + Superglue. I used to hate pinning and avoid at all costs but too many models with bits snapping off in game, or simply through handling, convinced me to get over it. Need a decent pin vice and drill kit - I picked up the GF9 set and it has served me well. I then just use plain old superglue.

Tidying: If there are any cracks or gaps after assembly then I'll use a little bit of grey/green milliput poked in with a cocktail stick. Smooth it off with a sculpting tool and/or brush it smooth with water (it's water soluble so acts as a nice brush-on filler).

Basing: I find it's easiest to prepare a base separately (actually I tend to use precast resin ones) and affix the mini afterward. This requires removal of the tab from the mini and placing a pin or two into the feet, and drilling corresponding holes into the prepared base. To get rid of the tab I use clippers (GW) and then file the bottom of the feet to get a flat finish.

Undercoating: I usually use spray GW white, though recently tried switching over to a dedicated primer. Colour of undercoat is a personal choice. Many people prefer black as it can speed things up and shadows are covered. I tend to use quite thin paints though so find painting over black frustrating. Plus I think the white tends to give a richer final colour. Btw, I have quite a small flat but spray at an open window with a load of cardboard laid about to protect the windowsill.

  5. I think the OSL is a little bit "chalky". I think it could benefit from either a light green or yellow glaze or two to make it look a little warmer.

I do need to do a little bit of re-blending to smooth things out but I like your suggestion of a slight yellow glazing. Good call.

(unless it wrecks the effect, in which case I'll blame you!)

  6. It has been slow going but I'm nearing completion on Pandora.

As you can see, I've gone for the OSL effect from the box. Pretty happy with it, though it needs a little bit of tidying and smoothing. Also pleased with how the freehand brocade on the coat came out.

Gonna switch the green leggings back to black-grey I think as it confuses the OSL.

    Nearly done now :)

  7. No they don't, though I think it is a matter of some controversy:

The final ruling seemed to be that they stayed forever (well, until destroyed), which is why she is limited to creating one per turn.

Either way, it was fun fencing McMourning into the alley :vb_devil:

*Grumble grumble* still sounds like cheating to me </sore loser> ;)

  8. Another battle report featured over on my blog. This time it's a smaller affair between Rasputina and McMourning.

A Line in the Sand (Malifaux Battle Report), on Max Von Deadlock's Miniature Madness

As with the previous one, it's brimming with pictures and turn-by-turn tactical maps.

Here's the terrain we were playing on, courtesy of my erstwhile opponent Mr Waferthinninja:

Hope people don't mind me hyperlinking the battle report like this, by the way. I could potentially do the copy-paste thing though I'm not sure how the formatting would work.

  9. Candy's lollipop is amazing. I painted one of those and I know how tiny it is. How did you get so many lines in there and get the curve so symetrical on every one?

Heh, I think I mostly got lucky :)

Actually I think it's slightly less symmetrical on the back. One useful tip is to paint thin, in multiple passes. Much like you might sketch with a pencil. Easier to tidy up the lines.

Another trick is to first put dots down as guides for freehand. I didn't use it here but have done in similar situations.

I did enjoy painting the lollipops and candy. Think that classifies me as a masochist.

  10. Cheers Deadslinger :)

How much of a pain in the ass was it to get the Sorrows pinned? I'm having a devil of a time with them.

Yeah. On mine if you look closely you can actually see the brass rod which I should have greenstuffed over but just painted it grey instead!

Also, are you going to add the fire to the box on pandora? I personally am a fan of the box being more mysterious. Maybe a glowing light effect rather than the big fire thing. Nice work over all.

Yeah I originally glued on the flame sculpt. Wasn't happy with that so greenstuffed some tentacles. But then I thought I'd rather do a green glow OSL effect so snapped them off!
