Sonnia - Really take a Freicorps specialist ?

Hi!

I read here many times, that one of the best models with Sonnia is a Freicoprs specalist.

The Synergie is obvious: He makes burning if he explodes, he shoots with a trigger that spreads burning and he can ignore cover. So he sets things on fire and Sonnia can shoot them without LoS and create Witchlings.

On the other hand I never find 9 Soulstones for him. With Sonnia I want at least 3 witchling stalkers (good melee damage, spread burning with every attack and on death), 1 Austringer (to move Sonnia out of melee or for all the other possible purposes), that gungfighter that comves with her in the box (to finish of burning targets). This alone are 30 Soulstones without upgrades.

And I still have no beatstick!

In the end I need at least 2 Upgrades for Sonnia and some Soulstones to spend during game. (for suits for example). A Freicorps specalist would still not be the Beatstick I need, because he also sucks in melee. And with only 10" range he will end up in melee....

So how do you build your list around Freicorps Specialist ? And do you really think he is nescessary / useful for Sonnia at 9SS ?

I don't have the cards to hand, btu I didn't think the Austringer could move Sonnia, its tactical retreat is only for himself.

Anyway, back to the topic -

The specialist isn't essential to play sonnia, but it is certainly an option. I would consider it as a replacement to 1 or more witchlings in the list.

Melee Beatsticks aren't always needed, it can depend on Stratergy, scheme selection, and probably most importantly, play style. And Sonnia isn't a slouch in close combat, the witchlings put out a decent melee damage, as does Sammual. Its damage taking the crew is typically weak on, and if you are trying to summon witchlings, thats less of an issue as they are then quite expendable.

Keep in mind that with the right upgrades, SOnnia can get more witchlings, as long as things are on fire.

Honestly, I don't run Sonnia heavy with upgrades most of the time, and I rarely bring more than 2 witchlings. The closest I get to a beatstick with Sonnia is usually the Gaurdian, and that just because he has ludicrous range to stop walks, and can take it.

Sam isn't there to finish off models. he's there to apply killing to whatever Sonnia didn't get. When you have 2 targets burning at opposites ends, or took most of Sonnia's activations to kill 1 -4 models, Sam gets the other burning model. I think single source he actually deals more than Sonnia.

The Specialist brings scheme denial to your crew, as well as another decent shoot attack which puts burning over large areas consistently. However, he is a bit slow and a bit light defensively.

Really, it's going to depend on your style. I think the Specialist is a good add to the crew, but not really mandatory. Some games will be better for him than others.

I think my last Sonnia crew with Freikorps Specialist included looked something like this:

Guild Crew - 50 - Scrap

Sonnia -- 5 Pool
+Cherufe's Imprint [1]
+Disrupt Magic [2]
+Reincarnation [1]

  •
  • Brutal Effigy [4]
  • Freikorps Specialist [9]
+Plant Evidence [1]
  • Guild Austringer [6]
  • Guild Guard [4]
  • Guild Guard [4]
  • Nino Ortega [7]
+Hair Trigger [1]
  • Santiago Ortega [7]
+Hermanos de Armas [1]

This list worked fine and had enough flexibility to counter most things I thought I might encounter.
There is a lot of flexibility with a Sonnia crew so I would not say any model is a must with her. Try out different models and see what you like and what works with the way you play. Dropping Witchling Stalkers from the start crew doesn´t really hurt as you will be able to summon during the game.

He is talking about the (2) AP deliver Orders which gives a 2" push.  Though personally would not trust that to get her out of combat alot as if they are in base to base with you, have melee reach 2", and you push 2" then you are not getting out.

Also, Sonnia has Melee range of 2", so it rarely ever gets you out of engagement, especially given that the enemy usually gets a move immediately after the austringer does that. That being said, with the engagement range, it is possible to get her out of engagment range enough to make the enemy use an AP on a walk if they have range 1. Unfortunately, this just means they charge. It's a decent move given that Sonnia has fairly low movement, but for disengaging, it is not great.

Don´t know about that. If I find Sonnia in engagement it is either because I moved there myself, (meaning I probably don´t want to move out of engagement,) or the model she is engaged with moved into her engagement range, meaning it already activated.

Anyways, I have used the Austringers 2" move to great effect a couple of times, so I think it is a solid move depending on circumstances. Using Santiago/Francisco with "Hermanos.." is probably a better use of resources if the option allows for it and it is generally a great way to move Sonnia.
