starting Ten Thunders, help!

Hi there,

I'm pretty new to Malifaux in general and looking to start Ten Thunders...but I'm not sure where to start other than "The Thunder" crew box.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I would recommend grabbing the Ten Thunders Archer box set as well.  A box of Oirian would be good as well.  That will allow you to field a pretty diverse crew.  Round it out with Yamiziko, if you like.

Later this month, Fuhatsu is due to be released.  He will be quite fun to play.

And welcome to Malifaux!

Welcome to Malifaux.  You've got quite a lot of choice, but I recommend getting a master in their box set and nothing else until you've played a few games and seen what you like.  The five masters who currently have boxes are Misaki (The Thunder box), Mei Feng (Rail Crew box), Jakob Lynch (Dark Debts box), Lucas McCabe (Relic Hunters box) and Yan Lo (Masters of the Path).  You could easily find people who would advocate getting each of them as a starter so your best option is to pick the one that looks nicest to paint and go with that one.

If you're really really new to Malifaux you'll also want a rulebook and a fate deck (you can use normal playing cards but having the Malifaux suits does make it easier to play).

Good luck, but remember that Bad Things Happen.

It's worth noting that, while everything has rules, a number of kits don't have cards after the transition yet (the second decks of cards haven't been printed). Only the boxes listed as 2e on Wyrd's site have made the transition to 2nd edition with new printed cards (Ten Thunders starters with cards are The Thunder, Dark Debts, Rail Crew)

Do you have the core book and a fate/poker deck already?

Also, to clarify, The Thunder is just one option, not sure if that's your preferred set to start with or what you thought is the core to the game. Each of the boxes with a Master (6-ish models) is a core set, and you can start with any of them, The Thunder is just one of the more iconically asian ones.

Thanks for the responses!

By new I mean that I have a few crew boxes from other factions (Lilith & Seamus) and have played 5-8 games. I also have the mini rulebook and a fate deck as well.

It's just that the new plastic models are all so awesome and I'm torn between The Thunder crew box or Torch & the Blade box. I really love the overall look of the 10T models and am leaning slightly more in that direction.

Oh, okay, cool.

I'd suggest Lynch's crew, then, since it works equally well with neverborn and ten thunders. I don't have the experience, but am under the impression that Misaki runs better as Outcast than TT. If you're not specifically in to breaking in to TT, then that isn't as much of an issue (and I think Misaki's crew looks cooler).

I haven't played Lynch, but I've heard that he's very hard to play with.  Again, I don't know if that's true or not.

I run a lot of Misaki.  She is very fun, very kill-y, but also a glass cannon.  If you want a crew that has a good amount of kill factor, but is also mobile, and can complete schemes and strategies that aren't combar oriented, I recommend picking up Misaki's box, Yamaziko, and some oiran.  You'll have over 50ss, but you'll have quite a few good models.

The archers can also be pretty good as well.  10T has a lot of fun models and I enjoy them quite a lot.

I second (third?) the Lynch option. I've been able to teach Lynch to a lot of people with little-to-no difficulty so he isn't that hard to learn with. Plus, Terror Tots, which you have (having Lilith's box), are really good as supplements to NVB Lynch. :)

How is Misaki better as an Outcast? I went up against Misaki last night in a 35SS escalation league that begins with a starter box, and she seems like I would enjoy playing her. I currently own Viks and Von Schill

Grim: one reason is because of infiltration: last blossom, misaki can hire up to 4 of the following models: yamaziko, ototto, oiran and torakage when leading an outcast crew without the merc tax. The mercenary tax and limits can be worked around so you can effectively play a last blossom crew but without being limited to only 2 outcast mercenaries and you only pay their normal cost.

You get a hard choice between recalled training and survivalist upgrades too.

But what Outcast models would be good with her that she can't find from a similar 10T model?

In addition, do Outcast Masters have to pay 1SS extra for Oiran?

Grim: the first four last blossom hired with infiltration are at their normal cost. Presently you can hire on top of that two mercs with the extra cost.

Misaki hasn't got explicit support for her crew like Yan Lo, McCabe or Shenlong. She is more an elite mobile runner and opportunist who can threaten a large area and offers her best support in a combat role ending engagements cleanly - kind of like a super torakage. She can be played as a glass cannon easily enough with the usual risks.

Outcasts / Thunders option is really just an idea to consider as both factions have relatively similar models outside the last blossom core:

Johan / Chiaki & Monk of Low River - conditions.

Lone Swordsman / Ronin - MI

Convict & Hans & Specialist / Archer & Sniper - SH

Bishop & Taelor & Killjoy / Ototo - Beats
