They're just rats

Have an interesting question that came up in a game the other night.

swarm of rats surround rail golem, eventually kill it, when it dies it explodes, this would kill all rats around it, however as its during a friendly activation, "they're just rats" means they can't be reduced below 1 wound (also in range for voracious rats).

So what happens?

1. All rats die, no new ones summoned

2. All rats die, new rats summoned

3. No rats die as they can't be reduced below 1 wound.

4. The only rat to die is the one that dealt the killing blow, which triggers voracious rarats

please help.

"They're Just Rats": This model may not be reduced to less than 1Wd during another friendly model's activation. Friendly Malifaux Rat models cannot be Summoned in response to this model being killed during its own activation.

So:

- The one rat who dealt to killing blow dies, and no new rat is summoned.

- The other rats are alive and at 1 Wd, except those close enough to the one rat that died to get healed up to 2 Wd.

That sounds right, pretty darn awesome too, so much for exploding things being a threat to rats!

For someone facing this,the trick then is to ensure the rats are more than 6" from hamelin or a rat-catcher and the make the exploding model die in your activation - this should kill all the rats in range and none will be brought back.

Yeah that was the point Joel, in that game we had all of them die, only the one that caused the golem to die should have died, the others surrounding the golem should have just come down to 1 was, but not died, due the rule on the rat card, nothing to do with voracious rats.

actually, I think they were out of range for voracious as I'd killed the ratcatcher by then and hamelin was back on his rock, so voracious was out of the equation

but yep, only one rat should have died to the explosion. next time, I'll overheat it with kaeris instead
