moody628 Posted February 1, 2013 Report Posted February 1, 2013 There's a very nice thread here about assembling your plastic minis. However, what I've noticed in my two purchases so far (Ten Thunders Archers and Master of the Path box) is that they come with 30mm slotted round bases. Too bad none of the models actually build of a basing slot. :-! Especially looking at the archers, with their tiny little feet, how do you attach the models to the bases with any sort of stability? I'm afraid that trying to drill a hole for pinning is liable to chew them up. Quote
hippodruid Posted February 2, 2013 Report Posted February 2, 2013 I thought the same thing when I assembled my 10T Archers (okay, my wife's, but whatever), but once the glue set, it was reasonably firm. Mind you, I used super glue (Zap-A-Gap Medium) and not plastic glue, although this was also so I could remove the model from the base later to give it an insert or different base. Quote
Clousseau Posted February 2, 2013 Report Posted February 2, 2013 When cutting the models off the sprue you will notice that generally there is a 'feed' into the bottom of the foot. If you leave say 5mm (1/4") of that attached it can be used as a pin. May need a little fettling but works on many models (though to be honest I can't remember how I attached the Archers). Alternate is very thin wire and a very small hand held drill. Quote

I always end up with having to do so green stuff work to fix it up. Quote
Grifonetto Posted February 6, 2013 Report Posted February 6, 2013 I used airplane glue to glue the feet to the base, and a kneaded eraser (Silly Putty would probably work as well) to hold the model in place while it bonded. Seems pretty sturdy, if it falls off the desk I'd be more worried about the flimsy bow and arrows breaking than the foot-to-base join. Quote

I'm afraid that trying to drill a hole for pinning is liable to chew them up. This is why I'd like Wyrd to stop including slotted bases, of all three sizes, and would like to see the new translucent bases also sans slots. I've been putting clear tape over the slots, at least for priming, and then I can just customize the basing over top. Hot glue works well, and is so much more economical than using green stuff. But it's an added step that I tend to neglect in my rush to assemble my new models. Quote
adary Posted February 6, 2013 Report Posted February 6, 2013 best way to close the slot is a toothpick cut to size and glued in place. Then you can position the mini, and glue it to the base itself using plastic cement. It takes a while to dry, but the bond is rock solid, and it can work quite well on tiniest connections. I just got my mei feng crew, and the rail golem, and the plastics look quite similar to what i'm used to from scale models. I would recommend everyone to use Tamiya plastic cement for these miniatures: http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/tam/tam87012.htm or http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/tam/tam87038.htm (i personally prefer this one) Quote
Nathan Caroland Posted February 6, 2013 Report Posted February 6, 2013 Eventually we'll go non slotted on our bases - in the mean time we need to go through our current inventory as otherwise that would just be wasteful on so many levels. Quote

Nathan Caroland Posted February 6, 2013 Report Posted February 6, 2013 Oooooh .... Actually what I really want is one of those guns that shoot shirts way up into the balconies of stadiums. Not that I would fill it with a shirt mind you ... Quote

Jonas Albrecht Posted February 6, 2013 Report Posted February 6, 2013 Fair warning, those things hurt at close range. Quote

mistercactus Posted February 6, 2013 Report Posted February 6, 2013 Nathan, when you change the bases, can I suggest doing recessed bases, and making themed plastic inserts that fit right into them? Edit: spelling Quote
i_was_like_you Posted February 6, 2013 Report Posted February 6, 2013 (edited) Fair warning, those things hurt at close range. And they have the potential to be fatal. See the Simpsons where Ned's wife gets knocked off the bleachers to her death. Eventually we'll go non slotted on our bases - in the mean time we need to go through our current inventory as otherwise that would just be wasteful on so many levels. Yeah, you did just transition to your own bases, with Wyrd and that extra basing hole on the bottom. Those do need used up... Maybe put your name on / create another miniature game, that, even while plastic, would still have the same kind of slot for the characters' feet? I'm not saying space marines, but something futuristic might be a good direction. Nathan, when you change the bases, can I suggest doing recessed bases, and making themed plastic inserts that fit right into them? Edit: spelling On that note, I would like to see future themes bases and accessories packaged as one big crew box of sprues that could include the same amount of 30mm, 40mm & 50mm bases that would be packaged separately now. They could either be base inserts, or they could be like Secret Weapon's simulated deep dish bases with the insert already a part of it. I'm sure after a cost analysis, there might be a way to split the difference on the price somewhere between what a pack of 30mm, 40mm & 50mm pewter inserts and a pack of pewter accessories all total cost now, to make them more attractive to customers.
