Saighdear Posted January 20, 2013 Report Posted January 20, 2013 Hello from Na h-Eileanan Siar or the Outer Hebrides if you want it's English name. I joined the forum ten days ago and thought it's about time I introduced myself to the community. I'm a proud Hebridean who enjoys watching wildlife, reading about history, and most of all playing video games & miniature wargaming. I've been playing video games since the old days of the SEGA Mega Drive and I'm usually willing to give any video game a try. For miniature wargaming I've been interested in it since the early 90s ever since I saw my first Games Workshop. As you probably can guess living in a remote outpost of the United Kingdom is not the most ideal location to be interested in a hobby like this as it's hard to find other people who are into the hobby. Due to this lack of people to play against and being unable to convince my friends to get into it I focus more on the actually building and painting of the miniatures than the actually game itself which resulted in me having different miniatures from different armies and different games from Games Workshop rather than a actual complete army. Off course this wouldn't keep me interested in the hobby indefinitely and eventually it would be forgotten and replaced by my other interest video games. Even when I moved onto the mainland for study and work and there was local gaming clubs and stores nearby I didn't get back into it. Last year marked the end of my absence from the hobby as I decided to get back into it and off course I'm back on the Outer Hebrides as I'm studying from home for a degree in IT with the Open University. Typical isn't it? Not into miniatures when your near clubs and have a steady wage then your into it when you live in a remote area and are a penniless student. *grin* I decided to finally build a complete army of one of my two favourite Space Marine chapters the Space Wolves or the Dark Angels, with the long term goal of having it nearly ready in three years when I go back to the mainland for work. I eventually pick the Dark Angels due to the rumours at the time of a new Codex coming out soon and after reading Angels of Darkness by Gav Thorpe. I'm currently putting together the contents of last year's Space Marine Megaforce. Anyhow when I got back into the hobby the first thing I did was to find online miniature wargaming communities and to see what was new and what new companies and games that have appeared during my hiatus. Malifaux was one of these games I came across and I do really like anything that's Steampunk as the 19th century is one of my favourite time periods to read about but since I was already collecting one set of miniatures that wouldn't be seeing games for a long time I couldn't justify myself getting into it. What change was that last month I decided to see if the gaming scene up here had charge at all while I was on the mainland so I Googled 'miniature wargaming Isle of Lewis' and I got SteamHammer's introduction thread. Two weeks ago I got in touch with him and we both agreed to meet each other at a local pub to make sure neither party was a crazy person, the next day I went to his place was given a demo of the game and now I'm hooked. I've order all four books and have gone for Misaki's crew as I like the oriental theme of the Ten Thunders and also prefer my miniatures to be plastic and not metal, just got to wait now. Well that's my long winded introduction done, see you all around the forums. Quote
dgraz Posted January 20, 2013 Report Posted January 20, 2013 I feel like I've known you all my life now! Welcome to Malifaux. Nothing beats matching wits with an opponent across a table but while you're trying to build a local community you can go on Vassal to get a fix. Quote
SteamHammer Posted January 21, 2013 Report Posted January 21, 2013 Welcome to the non-lurking parts of the forum. Glad you enjoyed my attempts at demoing. Quote
Pierowmaniac Posted January 21, 2013 Report Posted January 21, 2013 Wow great to hear that even on some of the remotest islands in the UK people are playing Quote
Saighdear Posted January 21, 2013 Author Report Posted January 21, 2013 Thank you all for the warm welcome, I be sure to give Vassal a look. Quote
