Odin1981
Title pretty self explanatory? Haven't downloaded the program yet. But i was curious if you could still communicate in game typing out messages. I'm not the most computer literate person but typing messages to communicate at least would allow me to talk with a person I I am playing if I download the software. Mehter
You do not need skype to play games on Vassal.
Odin1981
Ok thanks man. Do you know if the player would still be able to communicate with the opponent though like threw a window or something?
Tharen
Thre is a chat window and I have played a couple of games without out skype. It slows things down a lot thought.
PeregrineFalcon
I have also used Teamspeak/Ventrilo to allow for audio chat. It has better quality than Skype, but since it requires people to download new software, its usually not worth it since most people already have Skype. Mehter
Ya, I like vent much better as well. Plus I'm just used to it from online games 'n such.
poulpox
The only issue with typing is that it'll take much more time to write what actions you are performing, rather than "say and do". The skype installation process is very simple and straightforward, you just have to click a few buttons and you're ready to go, and it's free! The downfall of talking is that it's a little more "home invasive" ie maybe wives don't really like to be heard by the gamer community, I know mine isn't really found of having to be quiet for 3h!... This is why I like Teamspeak/Vent, you can mute your microphone with a key binding really easily. As mentioned above I'm usually on a Teamspeak server 24/7 (most of if in the AFK channel), so my wife is pretty familiar with walking in my office and waiting until I mute my mic before talking. With that said, she also says hi to my friends on Teamspeak since she knows them all in real life Not that I have a problem using skype going forward, but the quality is def less than that of Teamspeak/Vents audio codec. PeregrineFalcon
Skype also does push to talk. Yes, understood. Was more making a point about the audio quality rather than the push-to-talk.
sassylady
So if I were to have all available to me, I could pretty much be ready for anybody I think

I support Mumble because even though it's a server setting, the audio used for it is so much higher quality than any Teamspeak/Vent server I went to. We are so far ahead in audio tech than my days on Roger Wilco .

Ratty
LAN parties were great... Getting all your computers to the same place.. then 4 hours of trying to get them to talk.. then a hour or so of gaming... Kids, they don't know they have been born... Really.
