Grumpy Posted April 3, 2012 Report Posted April 3, 2012 It's miniature terrain...so...this forum I suppose Couldn't pick a better one. Im slowly putting together a table to play some malifaux...I'll post some pics as I progress the larger square tiles are 1.5 inches. the terrain piece(s) are on 3: 1x1 plastic tiles. I plan to jazz up the terrain after I add a second level. ---------- Post added at 05:25 AM ---------- Previous post was at 05:21 AM ---------- I plan on making 10 pillars...I like them I would put teddy in the picture...but I don't own him or any other malifaux miniatures yet. The awesome miniatures made me want to game... I can't game without a table and terrain... So... I figure I'll make some terrain, then play. I did realize that not all terrain features fit every game system... But, I'll work that out later. -grumpy Quote
DeusInnomen Posted April 3, 2012 Report Posted April 3, 2012 Looks like you're using Hirst Arts molds? Good start so far. I just hit the hardware store yesterday for plywood, 1x2s and wood screws to build two gaming boards m'self (one with dark green felt for a 'grassy' field and one with tan felt for a 'sandy' field). So far, the only observation I have is that maybe I should go ahead and drop the extra money on buying a lighter-weight material. Plywood is heavy. Quote

I thought about plywood for a modular base on the table...but the heaviness of it was unappealing. Def hirst arts...lOve the stuff . I went to lowes and found some plastic tiles, they were 60c each at 1 square foot a piece. They are pretty stiff...I'm liking them. ---------- Post added at 05:54 AM ---------- Previous post was at 05:31 AM ---------- If anyone had advice for what type of terrain features are most usefull...im all ears. Water features, trees, small vs. large pieces, multiple levels? Quote
Red_Starrise Posted April 4, 2012 Report Posted April 4, 2012 If anyone had advice for what type of terrain features are most usefull...im all ears. Water features, trees, small vs. large pieces, multiple levels? Generic features are always great in that they can be re-arranged to fit different locales in the rulebook. Trees are good, as are swamp/pond pieces, hedges, walls, fences. I've found that, at least in the local games, multi-level terrain doesn't get much use out of it's second/third levels as the rules for moving between are not so fluid like in WH40K where a soldier can basically shimmy up a building as easily as moving forward. This does make me a sad panda because there's so much possibility for terrain features that won't get their full potential used. Quote
SpiralngCadavr Posted April 4, 2012 Report Posted April 4, 2012 This does make me a sad panda because there's so much possibility for terrain features that won't get their full potential used. We just play the house rule that, in terrain/elevation-dense boards, ladders are normal movement and climbing penalty on things that could be reasonably climbed is 1" per 2" (so one floor is typically a 3" move). So far, I haven't had much experience in forests, and find that large objects (with at least a 5x5" or equivalent footprint) are much more interesting than smaller ones, which often are just something to loosely navigate around. Multiple levels are still hard to get to work, and often I don't see people using them unless they start the game elevated or they're the only way through. Fences are good times, though. A couple are nice to have around. Quote
Grumpy Posted April 4, 2012 Author Report Posted April 4, 2012 sweet, thanks for the info. Ill probably put another level on top and if it never gets used...it never gets used. how much terrain is good for playing 50% table cover? Quote
Evaine Posted April 4, 2012 Report Posted April 4, 2012 Really good looking terrain so far. That's one aspect of mini gaming I haven't tackled so far, as one of my friends already has quite a bit of terrain. I've looked at Hirst Arts stuff before but wasn't sure about them. Quote
Demonn Agram Posted April 4, 2012 Report Posted April 4, 2012 I love good terrain! and I like where your table is heading! In my oppinion you can't go wrong with too much terrain. It makes for interesting gaming. Forces people to think outside of the box. (but then again check my first sentence - so I'm probably biased) 50% is about right ammount of coverage. Malifaux is great because it gives you opportunity to interact with terrain so it isn't just something that's in the way. It can also boost your models or hinder them which again gives interesting gaming. That being said, when doing (organizing) tournaments (or other competitive play) you should be careful not to overdo it because of the game length (time restrictions). Terrain slows the game down, and one other important thing to remember is that before playing you should come to agreement with your opponent as to what each terrain represents and what special terrain rules there are... (to avoid missunderstandings/conflicts during the game itself). Quote
Grumpy Posted April 5, 2012 Author Report Posted April 5, 2012 Adding some fancy to my raised terrain piece. Quote
ShaddowKatt Posted April 6, 2012 Report Posted April 6, 2012 WOW!!!! What are you using to do this??? Quote
Grumpy Posted April 7, 2012 Author Report Posted April 7, 2012 very nice work Thanks! Im using hirst arts molds and hydrocal plaster. I've been buying molds for awhile now, but if you buy one or two a month, five months down the line you got yourself a handful of versatile building material. I like Legos and the hirst arts blocks have that same feel, if you can imagine it, you can probably build it. ---------- Post added at 05:46 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:39 PM ---------- I've built a few buildings, that's baby kade and teddy hanging out on the bridge. Demonn Agram Posted April 7, 2012 Report Posted April 7, 2012 I have the same tower. It's awesome! Quote
Grumpy Posted April 7, 2012 Author Report Posted April 7, 2012 I have the same tower. It's awesome! I'm a pretty huge fan of the tower, I think that I need to build another. -break- today I've decided to roof my small building today...it's been sitting roofless for a month or so. i haven't figured out a better base for roofs than plasticard, it's easy to trim sturdy and thin. done...ish....I still need to add some more fancy bits.
