Thanks Ebonstar. It was one of the suggestion my play group had to keep things off-kilter and fairly balanced for new players. I find its pretty intimidating for a new player of a game to step into a tournament knowing they may be facing experienced tournament players. We thought this was a fun factor way to let everyone enjoy the tournament and remove some of the fear!

I am providing the models for the lists. Depending on the lists and how many "experienced players" register, I may/will be borrowing heavily from the community and/or players. I have asked that people show up with thier own models, just in case we run short on crews.

On the good side, the random selected crews will be outlined prior to the end of January, a solid 2 weeks before the Tournament.

It should be fun.

I just picked up the game two weeks ago. Would a new player like me be intimidated around the people that are playing?

I currently play at Victory Comics on Thursdays and just recently bought my own crew. I don't feel like I'm quick enough yet, and I don't want to annoy the more experienced players. Should I participate in this tournament? The Victory group only meets once a week, and I'd have 2 weeks to get ready. Is that enough time?

Nayte, your exactly the type of player this tournament is built around. The "Experienced" players at the tornament are being given lists they may not be familiar with, and that are more Theme and Challenge focused than normal. This tournament is built to allow time for new players to jump into Tournament Malifaux and get the experience of playing. Along with that, the typical group who comes out to the Huzzah events is very friendly and willing to help new players learn the game. Lastly, its a great way to get 3 games into a day and just have a good time!

As a note, our regular gaming night for Malifaux is on Tuesdays. If you get a chance to swing by, please feel free. I know I have been speaking with Aaron and have been looking at bringing some of the local Ashburn guys down to Victory on a Thursday.

PM me with any other questions!

The tournament went very well, with 10 people showing up. Our mix was 6 new players to 4 experienced players.

The randomly assigned crews did not work out as well as I expected. We ended up randomizing crews again on turn 2, then the 4 experienced players picked crews from a select set on turn 3. I also had to do a little shuffling to match experienced players against new players to keep the mix even through the room. Top tables were not affected, which worked out well.

I think this worked for a fun and low-end-competitive tournament. It seems to have really worked well for raising the overall excitement for Malifaux among the attendees!

Here are the results:

The experienced players were Dan, Mike, Tim, and eChris.

We also had a "Spoon Award" for last place. I want to thank the wider Malifaux community for this idea, as it worked out really great. Here is the picture of eChris being the "little spoon" for the "Big spoon" going up on the wall with his name attached.
