KamikaZ
After seeing lobo's ice pillars and how awesome they are, I spoke o my wife about the cost of these.... to my dislike she told me I cant get them lol she wears the pants, but says I can make them so I bought some resin and have tried (to no avail) to create a mold for the pillar itself and am not having any luck.... i have tried elasticlay, I have also tried dental grade alginate powder and neither work does anyone know what I can make a mold from and or how I could do it? ( I am trying to replicate the ht 5 seeing as snow storm is ht3 I want to make taller than him)
Demonn Agram
did you try latex milk? I know it sounds kinky but it's the stuff for making molds actually. I suggest you mak a box (out of MDF) without the top, make it watertight (hot glue gun is the fastest way) and place the pillar inside and cover it with latex milk. Before pouring in the milk, I suggest you first use a brush to "paint" the pillar with latex milk (just so it sticks to the pillar) and then pour in the milk. let it set for a day or two. and that's basicly it... Yazza
isnt it faster to like paint layers on the pillars, doesnt that dry faster?
Demonn Agram
probably. but that way you have to hang around it all the time. my way may take a while longer but once you pour it in, you leave it aside to dry and can paint your minis worry-free until it is dry
KamikaZ
latex milk sounds ok but the trouble I have is I dont really have aything for the pillar to use to make the mold from I used my sons playdoh container to make a pillaresque object didnt turn out the best but im going to try one more thing today and see how it goes
Demonn Agram
you could try making the pillar out of high density polystyrene. make a couple of HT5 length boards, glue them together using PVA. then use a knife to model the pillars. afterwards paint the PVA glue over the HD polystyrene (just in case the milk eats away at the polystyrene - not sure) and repeat the process from above... (that's how I'd do it...)
pixelante
Speaking of pillars, fire included, how many does one need of either?
KamikaZ
I dont know about fire but I believe that fire pillars are only 2 per turn that fade??? not sure on that one... as for my pillars I have achieved success with the help from my lovely wife =D I used epoxy resin in freezer bags tightly wrapped and taped inside toilet rolls.... so far has done the trick ill try to finish what I have tomorrow and post pictures up so you can see what we have achieved
pixelante
Sounds to me you mixed some resin in a plastic bag and then manipulated it? Did you think to add a coloring agent like some blue ink?
Augifertangtan
I thought casting stuff was relatively inexpensive if you're doing it on a smaller scale. How's this for cost? [url=http://www.amazon.com/Alumilite-Corp-Mini-Casting-Kit/dp/B0054IS6KY/ref=wl_it_dp_o_npd?ie=UTF8&coliid=I1Z5Y993XG83AE&colid=1JY6Y27VGMXQ5] 30 bucks and will get you that 1 mold that you want, and enough resin to cast it once or twice. Other than that...Sculpey clay or air dry clay works as well...gotta be cheaper than latex milk...
Ratty
...gotta be cheaper than latex milk... I somehow doubt it I've got litres of the stuff in my cupboard.
EvilGinger
I am sculpting mine in Miliput since they are not complex if you do them in the same style as the Salamander Part of Sonia's avatar & as you need only two at most its not that mush work. However if you want to know about resin casting look here http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/topics.mv?id=32 or if you feel daring post a question but be warned this is not a place for sensitive souls as some of the boards are infested with the lowest scum of the wargaming hobby

diehard
I know a lot of friendly, helpful WM/HORDES players who are true sportsmen and a pleasure to play, but I will concede that the tournament nature of the game and community tend to draw a lot of power gamers, but you see that more on the forums than in real life. And I have been a member of the Miniaturespage for many years, although I don't often post there. I will say that there are many helpful and talented people who post there and who have answered many of my own bizarre questions over the years, but I have observed a lot of, let's say "cliqueishness" for want of something better, and plenty of attitude to go around. The Wyrd forums are like a breath of fresh air to me. This is a great community for modelers and gamers alike.
KamikaZ
This is how they turned out I still need to put the LEDs in them which ill do later tonight.... thank you for the honest help and opinions on all this thats why I asked on here =D
EvilGinger
A bit off topic but I was referring to Napoleonic war gamers of the sort you find on TMP aka PMT who are a bit more sensitive than... something very sensitive & cattyer than the avatar of cats. They infest parts of that board and have to be beaten off with pointed sticks whilst reciting the Mantra the French army was not all Imperial Guard. EvilGinger
Back on topic I like the ice pillars but would have put them on standard 50mm bases which would hide the battery for the blue White LED
fritz the cat
This is how they turned out I still need to put the LEDs in them which ill do later tonight.... thank you for the honest help and opinions on all this thats why I asked on here =D that looks really cool actually! rad stuff edit: I like how it looks like a solid pillar, while others, that are still cool (dont get me wrong) but look more akin to a pile of icecubes
mistycalla71
Your results were impressive for simple a techique, they really do look like ice forced into form and brought forth from the ground up. I believe my resin wells stir into motion. Any ideas on how you are going to color them drybrush white, and wash bright blue or recaste with colored resin. If the later is chosen my I suggest just a few drops put in after you pour into mold a random effect should look great, or oh shoot have fun awaiting future pics to enjoy... KamikaZ
im going to make a light blue slurry using water pva and snow flock and paint onto some parts but most of the colour will come from the LED sticks that will be inside them as they are sorta yellow not so clear but the effect worked well I will finish them hopefully tonight but have a few things to do first so may not get them done yet... KamikaZ
these are the 3 steps I had to create the final result so i have obviously had time to do it lol first in photo 1 I used a simple LED stick I purchased for the insert Photo 2 outlines that it does actually glow and during this process I drilled out the centre of my pillar Photo 3 shows the LED stick inside my pillar
KamikaZ
and the final result although perhaps not as exotic as others I have seen they are a natural looking pillar of ice which is what i aimed for..
KamikaZ
so as you can see my wifes idea of a frezer bag wrapped inside a dunny roll had actually done what i wanted it to do I was sceptical about the look of the final result it turned out awesome so all in all I have a great wife with creative spunk lol

KamikaZ
This pillar is my wifes fire pillar she made it today using the idea of the ice pillar and a tricky use of an old ghost rider toy
