Alviaran
What I do: - cut the tab between the mini's feet - pin one foot with 1cm sticking out of the mini - put it on top of a cork This is what I do. I further have the corks glued to spare bases (well, that's only my big one. The rest are on GF9 econo bases because they are heavier) to give them a nice wide base to set down on while I work as well. I have enough for a full unit with attachments in Warmachine or a full crew in Malifaux to work on all at once. Only my Avatar remains for my Malifaux crew so the corks have all been freed up for my next project.
munch
I use my hand holding the base or sometimes bluetack the base to a paint pot then use the paint pot (just make sure you wont need that paint soon or sometimes I use a vice. Backno
I use 2 old GW pots plastic glued together with a wad of sticky tack on top. Lets me hold a full handle using all my fingers, greatly reducing the fatigue of paints a ton of guys at once.
Dark Alleycat
Thick pill bottle plus blue tac stuck to the base.
Omenbringer
If the foot willl support it, I put a pin in the foot then use a Pin vice to hold the model. If the foot wont support it then I just mount it to the finished base. If however you leave the tabs on the model then you can always just replace the pin vice with a set of lockable forceps. Gaspy
I tend to paint groups of figs at a time, also, I pin everything to a scenic base (painted separately). I use a simple thick-lipped clamp to hold the figure I'm painting at the moment. I rotate the figs around as I paint and fear blu-tac would be insufficient to the task. I like the nails idea. Might try that.
MunkeyKungFu
I blu tac mine to a paint pot I won't be using. Your fingers are usually very greasy and when you handle the model it transfers and can mess the paint job up.
Vinncent
I prefer gently, temporarily stick to the base, or if it's pin hold the model on the cork.
