SteamHammer
I listened to the interview at the Through the Breach site yesterday. Maybe do another one in the background today.
edonil
Going to try out with the public beta at the end of May?
SteamHammer
I doubt it. There's not exactly a lot of people here to try it with. I haven't had a game in months. I'll probably pick up the book at the Gencon sale but leave the faction decks until next year once the playtesting is over.
edonil
Gotcha. Fair enough that. Ooo...I just found something to read... o.o A free ebook compilation of the complete works of H.P. Lovecraft.
SteamHammer
Still way to much in my reading list for things like that. And once the backlog is down I need to get the last Safehold book.
edonil
You'll probably be just in time to get another book behind...next one is due out this fall...
SteamHammer
Don't remind me. At this rate I'll never catch up. Too many good books out there and each year I find new authors or series.
edonil
Yeah. Next year is going to be fun, though...a prequel to Sabriel is due out!
SteamHammer
To what now? My Google-fu suggests Garth Nix who rings a bell but I've not read any of his. Edited May 2, 2013 by SteamHammer
edonil
Oh, you need to add Sabriel to your list and give it a position of prominence...excellently written YA novel. Sabriel is one of my favorite heroines of all time, and the setting Nix created was absolutely fascinating...inspired me a lot with my own novel. He did a very interesting spin on the idea of song magic, and with necromancy.
SteamHammer
I think I saw a box set in a sale just now. Lets see if I can find it again.
edonil
Lirael is a tougher character to like...she starts off fairly depressed (not without reason) but she eventually becomes quite awesome. I'm just excited that he's getting back to the setting, even if not with any of the characters. Oh, and you might know him from Shade's Children, The Seventh Tower series or the Keys to the Kingdom series.
SteamHammer
I don't think I've read any of his stuff which is why I thought that thing in the sale was a box set of DVDs for a country and western singer (brain must have been thinking Garth Brooks). edonil
Ah, not quite. What's the box set?
SteamHammer
It contains Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen. I trust your taste in books enough that I've gone and ordered it.
edonil
Heh, that's high praise indeed! Yep, that's the whole of the Old Kingdom stuff out so far. I forgot to mention Mogget. o.o I don't know how I managed that. He's a snarky talking cat and is hilarious.
SteamHammer
I can intersperse them with the last couple of Longknife books.
edonil
Good choice that. Still enjoying them, I take it?
SteamHammer
Definitely. A great set of books. What are you reading at the moment?
edonil
At the moment? Finishing off my textbooks. Almost done...so close to being done. After that, I think I'll do a reread of Double Eagle to get some more inspiration for getting back into writing. And I really want to at least try tackling this Lovecraft set. Oh, and I've had The Blinding Knife on my shelf for literally months...need to get through that...

edonil
Dan Abnett 40k novel. Fighter pilots in the Gaunt's Ghosts setting. Quite the fun read, if not very complex. There's been rumors of a sequel for years, but I'm not holding my breath. ---------- Post added at 05:27 AM ---------- Previous post was at 05:24 AM ---------- O.o They did a sequel to Gilead's Blood? SteamHammer
Not heard of that one either. All the Black Library books I've read have been pretty average.
edonil
They're brain candy. Some have a measure of depth to them, but for the most part they're pretty simple. But there are stories I got in high school that I still greatly enjoy and have fun keeping up with. I'm just shocked at the decision to do a sequel to Gilead's Blood, that was a short story collection and was quite old by the time I got around to it.
