Painting Bases?

I am looking for opinions here. I am not really used to the large round bases. I have painted many GW style bases. I have no problem with pinning the minis etc... My question is with the inserts do you paint the rim of the base of just leave it black? I picked up some of the Victorian inserts and they will be hard to match.

I have seen a lot of different things with the bases. Some people leave them black. Some people paint them to blend in with the rest of the base. For me, I paint mine to match the faction for the piece, that way they are easy to find in my storage box. Gives them a cool coherent look when on the table together.

So, in the end, do whatever you think looks the best for your models! ;) Also of note, if you buy full resin bases, and not just inserts, then you'll usually have to paint the edges of the base yourself, so if you leave your base-insert ones as just the unpainted black plastic, then a resin base which is painted black on the edges probably one look exactly the same, if that's something that is important to you. That's why I like my method of painting the whole rim, that way everything is uniform, regardless of what the underlying material is.

Base painting trends seems to go along with what we see in the catalogs and source books. It used to be pretty accepted that base rims had to be painted earthy (green or brownish) then people switched to black (so it wouldn't detract from the model). In the end it doesn't really matter, paint it the way you like (I would recommend keeping it subdued a bit though and complimentary).
