Big Ned
I've gotten started on some Malifaux-specific terrain. I love the wild west era so it was a no-brainer that I'd be doing a mining town theme. Here's the current progress of the test building (probably end up a blacksmiths. I'm currently drawing up plans for a saloon, a livery stable and a row of shops.
Maniple
Looking good. What is it made out of?
Big Ned
Thanks. It's foamcore with basswood panels glued on to provide the texture. I prefer basswood to balsa wood, it's not quite as soft makng it much easier to do precise work with.
kbdrand
One thing. Traditional Blacksmith shops usually were more open aired, with larger doors on the front. That building looks more like a general store or barber shop. But I can't wait to see it fully finished.
Big Ned
Thanks for the info on the blacksmiths. General store it is.

Big Ned
Mini-update: I've not started painting the general store. But I have made and assembled the foamcore part of the next terrain piece (a row of buildings). Sadly no photos of that yet as I'm stranded at my in-laws due to the weather. I'll try and get some pictures up at the weekend. Edit: I'm home so here's a photo Edited December 4, 2010 by Big Ned

Big Ned
Thank you for the kind words guys Mini update: All the foamcore work is finished now, and I've started the loooong process of adding the basswood panels. As you can see I've decided to improve on the first building by making a slightly more intricate design. I'm trying to simulate support posts and proper joins. joelmmorgan
I have made one house out of the foamcore, you pics have motivated me to create a small village. What I have found is that I don't have a theme in which to create a board. So I do 2 houses or even 20, what do I do then? I am going to take your idea and do a small town. Some buildings on the left and right, perhaps a cemetary.... Your buildings look great and motivate me to do my own.
Svenn
Really cool starts on these! Can't wait to see what you do with them.
LoboStele
Sweet. I'm picturing two rows of buildings like that, with Perdita at one end and Seamus at the other. High noon.
Big Ned
The classic high noon gunfight scenario was one of my inspirations, (I'm a sucker for a western). @joelmmorgan, Other things to theme a board would be a cemetary (preferably on a hill, that way you can model some open graves ). Possibly a mine entrance. Here's the latest, not much progress but then I've not got a lot of time. I've also made all the buildings with removable roofs for gaming. Geek Games
Looking good. Any ideas what you will be using for the furniture inside?
Big Ned
I've actually decided against interior detail. I've found with experience that for the time it's on show and it's lack of effect on the game that it's not worth doing. Don't get me wrong, it looks great but, does tend to get overlooked when the buildings are in use.
dgraz
Sweet. I'm picturing two rows of buildings like that, with Perdita at one end and Seamus at the other. High noon. That can only end one way - :gunman: Seamus in the dirt!! I've actually decided against interior detail. I've found with experience that for the time it's on show and it's lack of effect on the game that it's not worth doing. Don't get me wrong, it looks great but, does tend to get overlooked when the buildings are in use. I would have to agree - decent painting within should be enough. joelmmorgan
Are those buildings on top of foamcore? Wouldn't it be better to use wood?
Big Ned
Foamcore is light and easy to cut precisely, like the first building the sidewalk bit outside will get a covering of basswood for texture. For larger models I would normally use an MDF base but with these being relatively small I wanted to keep them light and easy to store. Big Ned
Here's a WIP pic of one side of the street And a couple of detail shots of the first building
Wakshaani
Don't suppose you have the plans written up for this at all? Measurements of each wall, where to cut winods and doors and such?
Big Ned
Here's the latest update I've still got all the measurements for things, though each building is different. The doors are 45mm tall, 30mm wide (this looks about right for Malifaux scale. The windows are 30mm tall, the top of the window is 45mm high, the bottom 15mm, the width varies between 30mm and 50mm. Each storey is 60mm high, Hope this helps, give me a shout if you want any other measurements.
Wakshaani
*scribble scribble scribble* And the length, width, and height of teh bildings themselves?
brucemanning
Wow, these are very precise and neat. Keep up the good work.
Big Ned
LOL Okay, here are the dimensions for the first building I did, as all the others are minor modifications. I used 5mm foamcore for all the buildings. All dimensions are Width x Height The base for the building is 130mm x 190mm (this gives you the floorplan of the building + a 40mm sidewalk bit for the front) The front is 130mm x 110mm The side walls are 140mm x 60mm The back all is 130mm x 60mm The canopy is 130mm x 40mm and should sit 55mm above the sidewalk. The roof is 130mm x 150mm. (I reccommend attaching a second piece of foamcore measuring 120mm x 145mm underneath to add strength and unsure that the roof stays in place if you leave it to be removable.) The walls which run around the outside of the roof are 20mm high. As a general rule I've left a gap of 20mm between any doors, windows or building edges, this is for gaming reasons mainly as it provides models with a decent amount of cover, aestheically it also prevents buildings looking too cluttered. Shae-Konnit
They look kinda like some small buildings I made, but instead of the wooden, western look I went for a spanish/mexican look and sprayed them with textured paint to give them a more stoney appearance. DOn't look as good as that though, need to get more practice in, but hell, better than nothing anyway! I had a look for any pre-fab terrain I could buy, but it kinda sucks as nothing i found would be appropriate for Malifaux, aside from some old Mordheim card buildings I hadn't built yet.
