TheBugKing Posted February 23, 2009 Report Posted February 23, 2009 A few of my finished Cryx pieces that have not been shown here: C&C welcome. Tear them up please! Quote
Malebolgia Posted February 23, 2009 Report Posted February 23, 2009 Cool color scheme! So you airbrush all the green stuff? Awesome effect...very smooth and it fits Cyrx very well. An airbrush is still one of those things I have to buy one of these days. Quote
Peterdita Posted February 23, 2009 Report Posted February 23, 2009 Pretty darn spiffy TBK! Nice green fade! Those looks pretty cool. I also like the rockwork you do on the bases. How do make those? Quote
TheBugKing Posted February 23, 2009 Author Report Posted February 23, 2009 I airbrushed the shield on the Bane Knight and the greens on the Jacks but the cloaks on the Bane Knight and Pistol Wraith are actually blended with a brush. The base is sculpted out of white milliput: And painted: Quote
Nathan Caroland Posted February 23, 2009 Report Posted February 23, 2009 Definite improvement from the 15mm stuff. Quote
Draykin Posted February 24, 2009 Report Posted February 24, 2009 As a fellow servant of the Dragon Father I have to ask TBK, when can you teach me to airbrush my jacks like that!?!? Quote
TheBugKing Posted February 24, 2009 Author Report Posted February 24, 2009 As a fellow servant of the Dragon Father I have to ask TBK, when can you teach me to airbrush my jacks like that!?!? I have the process pictures in steps for the Leviathan which I'll post in a bit. That and using Testors Model Master lacquer based paints so that you can thin them properly are about all there is to it. I do have a $500 set up. The fine detail brush is only a $100 model that is not really as fine a brush as usually is used for miniatures. The compressor on the other hand is a $400 unit. You will get much more mileage out of a very good air source then a good brush. @ FF - I can paint the 15mm stuff quite well too. When I spend more then 2 hours on a project painting that is. Painting contest? Naaaa. Quote
St. Anger Posted February 24, 2009 Report Posted February 24, 2009 TBK, Nice job on the Cryx!!! I really like the airbrush work... I have a nice double-action Badger airbrush that I have never quite gotten the hang of to be able to pull off the blends and fading that you did... I am jealous... Quote
TheBugKing Posted February 24, 2009 Author Report Posted February 24, 2009 Thanks for the kind word folks. Here are a few step by step pictures of me doing the Leviathan: I usually begin with the darkest color: Followed often by a medium color: Followed by the highlight color: I then go back with the dark color to finish the blend out: If you use liquid masking material you can do blends right on top of each other. Here I masked off the green after it was done and sprayed the barrels black, followed by a white at an oblique angle so that the spines left "shadows" and then followed with a deep red lightly near the stock of the barrels: Quote
thetang22 Posted February 24, 2009 Report Posted February 24, 2009 As I've told you before, I definitely think the technique works well. The stuff looks good! Quote
Jabberwocky Posted February 24, 2009 Report Posted February 24, 2009 Thanks for the quick lesson in airbrushing. The results look great! Quote
DeafNala Posted February 24, 2009 Report Posted February 24, 2009 VERY COOL STUFF! The Cryx thingys have been calling to moi for awhile; I assumed it was ANOTHER sign of imminent senility. However the FANTASTIC job you did on these little Suckers MAY have push me over the line [to getting some that is]. VERY WELL DONE! :thumb: Quote
Draykin Posted February 25, 2009 Report Posted February 25, 2009 THANX for the photos! I have a few airbrushes that I have only ever used for base coats on figs. I have never had the confidence to do blending. How do you get the liquid mask off? Quote
TheBugKing Posted February 25, 2009 Author Report Posted February 25, 2009 I just gently pick at it with an exacto blade till I get a corner to work with. It's just latex rubber basically so it balls up and comes off rather easily. I've tried it with acrylics and it almost always lifts the acrylics off. I suppose you could lay down a mat or gloss varnish to seal the layer before applying the mask to get around the problem. I have also had it lift the lacquers once or twice if I didn't leave enough drying time. The lacquers take a bit longer to really set up so be careful there too. You can find the stuff in art stores usually. Ask for liquid frisket. Quote
TheBugKing Posted March 4, 2009 Author Report Posted March 4, 2009 looks really good, to bad there Cryx. MMM Undead dragony goodness! Join. Or die and join anyway Khador meatbag! Quote

moonrise Posted March 11, 2009 Report Posted March 11, 2009 what paints were used on those ? looks totally badass !!!!!! Quote
TheBugKing Posted March 11, 2009 Author Report Posted March 11, 2009 I used testors model master paints. They are lacquer based so thinning them for airbrush use is really easy. It does create a ventilation problem though. It's important to use a spray mask and air handling equipment. Quote
