Here are the photos from the painting contest I had with my family this past Christmas. I was a little late in getting all the stuff finalized and such, but I'm finally getting around to it.

A few things to note - most all of my family has never painted a miniature (much less anything else) in their lives. They are all very new to the scene, and most of theme will not paint another miniature unless I coerce them into another competition like this one. I didn't paint any minis myself, but rather created the display case they would be stored in. The display base isn't 100% finished yet. I still plan on putting frozen water in the waterfall and stream, but I don't have any of the materials currently to do that.

I did the bases just like I did with my Lillith diorama. I put tiny rare-earth magnets on the bottom of the bases and put metal washers on the display case under their spot so that they would stick to the base for added security when transporting the miniatures. It works wonders, and I'll be doing it with all my display cases and miniatures from here on out.

I would definitely recommend this sort of thing to anybody. I was a lot of fun. Lots of table talk going on, with Christmas music in the background (Charlie Brown's Christmas and good 'ole Bing). The people consist of my brother, his wife, my 3 sisters, 1 of their boyfriends, and me.

I know a lot of the pictures aren't the clearest, but hopefully you can enjoy them none-the-less:

Wow! Very nice! I remember you talking about throwing that idea around, but way to make it happen. Must be a pretty cool group of people you got there to participate in something like that. Looks like fun, maybe I can test the waters with this kind of thing. Thanks for the idea.

The minis look pretty darn good! Great scene with the Christmas tree!

Oh yeah...I forgot to mention that.

1st place: Samael, painted by my sister in law

2nd place tie: Sonnia, painted by my older sister, and back row witchling stalker, painted by my youngest sister.

Things I noticed about this contest and the miniatures in general:

- I like Judge's sculpt a LOT more than I did just from the pics in the online store. The painting is great there, but I never really cared for it for some reason (probably the glasses). However, seeing it in person, he has a VERY dynamic pose that looks very cool.

- Some of the Witchling Stalkers have sort of weak joints on their sword hilt areas. Gotta be careful with them or else you'll see a sword get bent out of whack.

- This is a VERY quick way to get an entire crew painted if you aren't too concerned about the overall painting quality. None of my siblings are seasoned painters, so you can't expect fantastic results, but it is nice having a full crew painted after 1 night, and its a lot of fun. (Actually, I guess it's a full crew +1 (Judge))

Very cool! I am envious - I can't find time to paint my own stuff, much less get family to pick up a brush. I've tried, but the shutdown/glazed look in their eyes after 15 seconds is enough. Nice work getting them to the table and seeing some very good results!

Wow, that looks great. I might try that myself one day. Greyhorde, I know exactly what you mean with 'the shutdown/glazed look in their eyes after 15 seconds'. Most of the times my relatives look at my models from about 50 cm distance and say: "wow, that's err... really nice... I guess..." On the other hand, last weekend my mom told me she'd like to try and paint a mini herself. I doubt she can see it though... maybe we should give it a try one day.

A very cool family project, I'm going to forward this on to mine as I'm sure my kids will immediately scream that they want to do one as well (though they want to paint zombies and blood ... I know, good parent huh?).

Sound like good parenting to me. :)

Well, as you can see in the family pictures, there are all sorts of colors on the table, but it was decided before hand to paint them in a Christmas theme to make it feel more like the holidays.

Really? At the level of your work, Bren, I'm a little surprised you get that reaction from family. I guess it's just the normal reactions of non-painters, because I (for one) just about fall out of my chair whenever you post anything new.

If your mom is willing to give it a shot, by all means, help her along with magnification and lots of light. A painting rig and pillows/padding/bracing to steady the hands might help give her confidence, too. My mother saw a few of my finished pieces and WIPs in November and liked them, especially one she thought was Moses from the movie The Ten Commandments. She wants me to paint one for her, but there's a Nativity set waiting in the wings I know she'll really appreciate.

Most of my family likes the stuff I do, but it doesn't make them want to paint, sadly. I just had to trick them into this one, and we all had fun. They would just rather leave the painting to the person who enjoys it and has some experience doing it. If its for a game, they would much sooner let me paint all the pieces than paint their own. Thats also why they let ME collect ALL the pieces for games.
