Stacey woke to the bright morning light which streamed through her window every morning. She never bothered to shut the curtains as it was dark enough on a night time due to her bedroom facing away from the main street, also she enjoyed the warmth of the sun on her skin on a summer's morning.

She dazed over and glanced at the clock, 8.37, she had a-lot to do today, collect the dry cleaning from the local Laundromat, pick up some groceries from Mr. Berrins shop and then prepare a dinner for her husband coming home from work. (He always left early, before 6am most days and often worked late.)

On mornings where she didn't have errands to run she would usually lie in bed and think what it would be like if he didn't get the job working long shifts, and had a little more time to spend with her.

Stacey slipped out of bed and pulled her dressing gown on, the warmth lingered in the woolen texture and cheered her up somewhat. She stepped out of the bedroom and wandered down the hallway, coming to an end at her son's room. The door was slightly ajar, which was odd, as the last thing she always did before going to bed was kiss him goodnight, turn the night-light onto a lower setting and close the door firmly shut.

As she pushed the door open the first thing she noticed was a strange lingering smell, not the smell of a usual soiled nappy or wax crayons left on the window sill from the day before, but stronger and more repellant. She continued to enter the room and suddenly went cold, her spine froze up and stiffened. All the warmth from the sunlight suddenly fell from her body, like an electrical current earthing itself. She emitted a breathless scream and focused on what was lying in the center of the room.

Her baby. Lying face down, one arm stuck out at an obtuse angle, the cot had moved slightly diagonally and created an unnatural pattern across the room, which was as shocking as her baby in the middle of the room. She ran across and picked him up with one fell swoop, he felt cold and clammy, and small blue sections of veins had risen to the surface of his skin, creating a deadly railway track running from his toes right to the tip of his head.

Stacey shook him gently and ran downstairs to his feeding chair, which still had remnants of his last meal scattered on the feeding tray. She placed him in the chair limply, and began to talk to him,

"Wake up honey, wake up"

"Please"

She begged for him to show signs of life. She was trying to deny everything she could see, thinking that this was his idea of a joke, he had always liked to play tricks like leaving toys outside her room, or pulling plugs from sockets when she was trying to watch the television. But as much as she tried to deny it, this wasn't a little trick, this was more.

"WAKE UP, Now....please" her anger rose and fell as she frantically tried to make sense of it all.

She pulled a bar of chocolate from the nearest counter and pushed it up against his nose.

"Look, choccy. You like choccy don't you, come on wake up for mummy"

But nothing. She opened his mouth and placed a small chuck into his mouth, hoping this would perk up his senses. His head lolled forward and the chocolate fell out slowly and landed with a wet 'thump' upon the tiled floor.

Suddenly his head jerked and started to roll back slowly, with slight clicking noises as if his neck was straining to hold the weight of his head.

Stacey noticed this and whispered,

"Kade?"

His eyes shot open revealing large, bulging, blood shot eyes. Staring directly at her, piercing through the love she had for him.

And that was when she felt the cold, clammy skin again. But this time, not in her arms as she had felt when she picked him up. But around her neck, tightening with an unreal strength.

Her last memory was those eyes.
