Coil
This is the Epic Skarre I painted for Rotten Harvest II. I'd like to ask all the good painters around here for some pointers on what I can improve so that I can submit something better for the upcoming contest. Since some thought the pics were a bit dark I went back and looked for better pics and from other angles and this is what I could find. Unfortunately I cannot take better pics of it since I painted it for a friend's army and he's got it now.
Ritual
You seem to have pretty good brush control as things seem neatly painted overall. I also like your colour choices. It does seem, however, that your paint is fairly thick which gives a quite rough appearance in places (especially in textured or heavily detailed areas). Make sure you have a smooth base coat (it may take several layers to get it solid and still smooth). Then use quite thin paint to apply highlights and shadows. You should probably use thinner paint than you did here to make the paint smoother and also the blendings smoother. Alternatively, use more intermediate colours when you apply highlights. Mix a little of your highlight colour into your base colour and apply quite large highlights. Then, mix a little bit more highlight into the previous mix and apply slightly smaller layers. Continue this way until your happy. These layers should also be fairly thin to avoid building up a surface roughness. Better to apply more layers and keep the surface smooth. Another thing I think would improve your results is to apply some sort of directed lighting on your mini. Chose a direction where light is coming from (from above is the common choice) and concentrate your highlights on areas subjected to this light source. Consequently, the areas that aren't exposed should be darker. On the mini you posted here it seems light comes from all directions more or less.
