Recommended Posts

It's time for another Wyrd Painting Contest!

Wyrd_Heavy-Metal_SocialMedia_1080x1080.jpg

Heavy Metal 2023 asks you to strike while the iron is hot and show off your metallics skills!
Submissions will be accepted from now until midnight EDT on May 31st, 2023. We encourage you to submit your entries early as no submission will be accepted after the cutoff, with no exceptions. If you need to make any changes to your upload prior to May 31st at midnight EDT (UTC -4) please contact @Hobby Wyrd via PM on the Wyrd forum. Entries are to be submitted HERE

Theme: Metal - Non-Metallic Metal or True Metallic Metal Techniques

As always, if you’re in doubt, you can reach out to @Hobby Wyrdfor clarification.

Categories
We have two (2) categories for this contest-

  • Single Model -  A single model on a base of appropriate scale or on a plinth of similar size. The single model should make up the majority of the submission and be the focus of the piece, not any additional accessories or details attached to the base.
  • Overachiever - Overachiever entries must meet the following criteria in addition to the theme:
    • Red Hot! The entry must incorporate heated metal.
      • NOTE: There is no diorama format for this category

Participants may submit one (1) entry. Please take the time to familiarize yourself with our general competition rules found HERE. There have been disqualifications in the past and we'd rather avoid that!

Reminders:

  • The piece cannot be previously displayed, shared on social media, or entered into a competition.
    • Full repaints of models are fine, but this should be a unique piece created for the competition.
  • Winners of the previous two Wyrd Painting Contests (below) must enter the Overachiever Category if they are submitting an entry.
    • Cast-A-Spell 2023
    • Danse Macabre 2022

NOTE: Prior to the start of voting, our contest staff reserve the right to move a submission into another category that fits more appropriately. If this occurs, affected participants will be notified via forum PM.

Prizes -

The Single Model Category will have the following prizes:

Community Poll - Based on Community vote for each model in the Category:

•    1st Place: $75 in Wyrd webstore credit
•    2nd Place: $50 in Wyrd webstore credit
•    3rd Place: $25 in Wyrd webstore credit

The Overachiever Category will have the following Prizes:

Community Poll - Based on Community vote for each model in the Category:

•    1st Place: $100 in Wyrd webstore credit
•    2nd Place: $75 in Wyrd webstore credit
•    3rd Place: $50 in Wyrd webstore credit

‘Best of’ Awards! The Wyrd staff will look at all the categories and vote to determine the winner for each of the following (note: these are NOT voted upon by the community).

•    Best of Single Models Heavy Metal 2023: $100 USD cash prize (via PayPal)
•    Best of Overachiever Heavy Metal 2023: $200 USD cash prize (via PayPal)
•    Best of Wyrd Miniature Entry: One Nightmare box of the winner’s choice (from a list of available Nightmare boxes)

Voting
We're pleased to announce that our forum voting now allows for multi-choice voting! That means every Vote Enabled member will have 3 votes each category to split between entries. We've wanted to make this standard for a while, and we're pleased to say that's now possible!

Very cool and inspiring theme as always! Two questions: it states that there’s no diorama category for overachiever. Does that mean it has to fit the restraints for the single category, or can a single model be placed on a plint with some added pieces? Just to clarify what the constraints are.

A requirement for overachievers is that the piece must feature heated metal. Does “Red hot!” Mean it has to be read or is that just there for fluff?

good luck to everyone entering and I whish you a lot of inspiration!

Hi My first time here, I haven't tried any competition in awhile, this seems really interesting and fun definitely taking me outside of my comfort zone. I have just one question.

As far as size goes is there a specific measurement that meets the "appropriate scale"?

I'm really looking forward to trying my hand at this.

Because we don't want to get too nitpicky, we don't have anything specific laid out. Don't build up and out on a bast a whole lot is the gist. For example, this fantastic death marshal piece would not be considered a single for the purposes of our contest guidelines.

Hello,

No need to send a pic before starting to work on the mini this time ?

That is mentioned in the general competition rules

"To submit an entry, participants must forum PM @Hobby Wyrd with a starting picture that includes the miniature (unassembled or assembled & primed,) forum name, and the date. This will ensure that the entries are all pieces done for this contest."

I agree on that one, is a vignette allowed, aka single miniature with limited additional basing elements standing in front of a painted backdrop?

Could you possibly show an example so first timers like me can know we're submitting correctly? Thanks and sorry if I'm being a bother.

- just take a picture of your mini unassembled or assembled and primed. I just wrote Heavy Metal 2023 and the date on a piece of paper next to my mini in the photo.

My question is answered in the general rules, missed that, sorry. A vignette is grouped with diorama. So the above question can be ignored

We have a lot of new interested participants so far, and I'd like to take a moment to remind everyone to review the general painting contest rules found here: General Painting Contest Rules

Specifically this part:

I believe it was @Silver_lining_minipainting who asked about the "Red Hot" extra for Overachievers. As long as it's being heated and that is clear, you can do whatever heat colors you feel are needed! If you want to go to white hot, feel free!

Here are 3 separate examples of what entry photos sent to me can look like. Note:  if there is an issue with your entry, I will reach out to you before the deadline.

image.jpeg  Assembled and Unprimed

image.jpeg  Unassembled

Well, this will ensure that participants had to obtain (buy, borrow...) an unfinished miniature to take a picture of. That seems like it.
Everything seems to be already solved by "The entry be not previously displayed or discussed.".

If it's not an unfinished miniature, it means you didn't start painting it for this competition. The rules are simple and described in two hundred words in the very first post announcing the competition. It seems those people don't really pay attention or can't be bothered reading.

"The entry should not be previously displayed or discussed" doesn't really solve anything because that way people could have started working on their entries months ago with hundreds of hours spent. This method ensures everyone has the same amount of time available to finish their entry.

Hey there ! I sent several pics of wip and also posted the pics of my finished mini on the (I hope so) right thread.

Haven't received any confirmation yet though... Is there anything I missed ?

Sorry for asking so many dumb questions, first time participating I really want to do things right :)

Cheers !

Hey, there.

You can submit only one image. It can be a collage of several pics but only one file.

Well shoot, I've screwed up big time!

I'll have to do a collage then. Any way to remove the pics I already submitted ?

Sorry for the trouble, and thank you for taking a bit of your time 😕

Cheers,

There is so little free time, but I really want to participate in my favorite contest with my favorite miniatures. Moreover, there are finally singles in the overachiever category - it's very cool! I expect a lot of incredible works from the contest regulars and new participants, and I will try not to disappoint you myself) Good luck to everyone!
