After being pelted by the sweltering summer heat, the relentless sun finally begins to set. Soon, beneath the glistening moonlight, the city comes alive. Streets glow from lanterns and hung torches. Taverns with fresh ale welcome you in with both candlelight and faint neon magic. And even the darkest of alleyways flicker with well-lit cigars and glowing eyes. Even in the night, the darkness is kept at bay.

City Nights is our first light-based painting contest, focusing primarily on Object Source Lighting (OSL) to light up characters by using the light from objects on the model itself, highlighting both the glow of the object and the darkness behind its shadows. Let’s shine a light on the details:

Submissions will be accepted from now until midnight EST (UTC -4) on August 14th, 2022. We encourage you to submit your entries early as no submission will be accepted after the cutoff, with no exceptions. If you need to make any changes to your upload prior to August 14th at midnight EST (UTC -4) please contact @Hobby Wyrd via PM on the Wyrd forum. Entries are to be submitted HERE

Theme: Lighting effects, such as OSL, glow effects, or playing with light and shadow.
Examples include:

  • Streetlamps reflected in water.
  • Neon Signs
  • OSL from headlights, tail lights, streetlights

As always, if you’re in doubt, you can reach out to @Hobby Wyrd for clarification.

We have two (2) categories for this contest-

Single Model -  A single model on a base of appropriate scale or on a plinth of similar size. The single model should make up the majority of the submission and be the focus of the piece, not any additional accessories or details attached to the base.

Overachiever - Overachiever entries must meet the following criteria in addition to the theme:
Diorama/Vignette of an urban environment

Participants may submit one (1) entry. Please take the time to familiarize yourself with our general competition rules found HERE. There have been disqualifications in the past and we'd rather avoid that!

Reminder: The piece cannot be previously displayed, shared on social media, or entered into a competition. Full repaints of models are fine, but this should be a unique piece created for the competition.

NOTE: Prior to the start of voting, our contest staff reserve the right to move a submission into another category that fits more appropriately. If this occurs, affected participants will be notified via forum PM.

Community Poll - Based on Community vote for each model in the Category

Voting

Oooh, gods! :o
Such an interesting theme!

"Overachiever - Overachiever entries must meet the following criteria in addition to the theme:
Diorama/Vignette of an urban environment"

Wait a minute, does this mean that Overachievers can't submit they entrys on game bases? Only Diorama/Vignette?

I had an awesome idea for a model and setting. I then realized that I have to play with the big kids in overachievers! Welp, back to the drawing board to think of an urban environment diorama.

Great theme, by the way. It will be fun to see what models everyone is drawn to.

Exciting!!!

gonna start working on it ❤️

For the last contest, the flowers and showers, Overachiever was for pro painters and participants who won something in any of the previous 2 contests (or sth on the line) does this still apply? Or anyone can submit at any category?

Just a few days left to submit! As a friendly reminder:

Entries may only be 1 (One) image. We have been receiving multiple uploads of different angle shots, which clutters up the gallery, makes poll formatting take longer, and the requires reaching out to ask which shot is wanted. Please be mindful when submitting that it is one image. Collage/composite shots are allowed.

I can't wait to se all the entries!
