Vessien
Hi there, I hope you all are as excited as me about the errata and the changes to the meta it will mean. And I was wondering what do you think the new Trained Ninja will be used for, do you think any non-minion will use it now? Which minions do you think will benefit the most from it? First of all, let's put the card so we have it in the thread:
belorey
It was necesary but is a bad news for Mr Tannen and Lynch Keyword.
TheUnseemlyOne
I at least like the readily available stunned that there’s access too now. That’s can be pretty big into certain matchups.
touchdown
I think Geisha get interesting with this upgrade. Lure a model out of position, then stagger it. Possibly while charging backward, try to make up that 6" while staggered. Coming from Outcasts, the enforcer selection in 10t is just so limited, I don't see this upgrade really fitting on any. Maybe on the Lone Swordsman or Obsidian Statue so they're more mobile? Seems good for most scheme runner minions too.

thatlatinspeakingguy
do I understand correctly that you cannot use Paralyzing Kunai outside charge action? anyway, Stunned is very powerful against some models, it can basically turn them off for a turn (Youko for example), so I would definitely rate this upgrade high, even if it's matchup dependant. Cats Laughing
I suppose you could put it on a hired Yokai (or other hired model in an Asami crew) as the stunned has additional interaction with the Yokai's Misery Loves Company. Could be useful for certain schemes or even strategies given their bonus action.
Thatguy
I think it's really interesting, getting access to a Run and Gun ability for the whole faction. Stunned is pretty neat as us Staggering at range. The stealth seems to work contrary to the 6" range. But I guess you could charge then duck back. 1

And, likewise, you don't get permission to take the action if you end up engaged (there's no implied "even if Engaged" clause), so it's not as easy to use as Run and Gun shooting.

It could still be put on a living model to help Yokai use Misery, but probably not worth it.

I thought the same, but it may be useful in case you want to flee from something, because it can be staggered too. That -2Mv comes handy then. Also, the other thing that comes to mind, is for someone that likes to get close to melee for any reason, like auras or similar. It gives you an additional thing to do when you are getting close. Yamaziko can use it when trying to buff the minions, for example. Or a Kabuki Warrior can stun/stagger someone when getting close to melee range but is out of reach for a melee attack. Thatguy
I looked at some of TT's cheapest living minions and it looks or there's a lot of synergy. Depleted- cheap, only 5 stones with the ungrade and pretty survivable. They either let you keep staggering and walking away you they get close and you can try to lock them down with Constrict for a while. Geisha-6 stones with the upgrade and only 4 wounds, but Stealth + Disguised is nice. Low River- 6 stones with upgrade, gives your backline healer some range offense and Chi tokens mean you can potentially stagger/stun at stat 7. Gokudo- 7stones with upgrade, can Charge forward to stagger/stun then Shuriken and/or Risky Maneuver backwards for Stealth. Wandering River Monks- 7stones, Stealth+ Butterfly Jump is really nice. Can Charge and attack with the upgrade then potentially Windblast the target outside of Stealth range. Or take the charge as a "Drive by" while walking/leaping to do objectives. Fermented Monks- kinda expensive at 8 ss. They can do something with 1 ap, then charge and Drunken Stumble back out of Stealth range. A 2" engagement is pretty fun too. If they have a 1" or 0" engagement range you can potentially keep an enemy engaged while charging around them to shoot with Trained Ninja. 2

When i saw changes in this upgrade i also thought about geisha - Stealth + Disguised + one enemy with slow from kunai and without ranged option Geisha is untouchable. For Depleted i still see them olny as summons, but in theory give two of them trained ninja and as they are sz2 they could make walking wall for the rest of crew to be untargetable by heavy shooting crews. Unless you are playing on Perdita's playground (vast space without los blockers). I would add Huckster - in Wastrel keyword for 8ss you get 3 AP minion with great mobility via Secret Passage and schememing via False claim, add to this Stealth so nobody will be albe to target from afar and kunai gives him another layer of protection (Slow or Stager makes average model with 5" move and 1" weapon range to use both actions to just charge, or one action to shot) and mobility. I would even try playing to use Sales Pitch more often

Da Git
Thinking about this on Rough Riders for a McCabe crew. Stealth helps their piddly defence and WP. Charge & flick a kunai, then shoot and either Ride with Me or Trigger Reposition on Dust Cloud to get away. Should be a great scheme runner/skirmisher model. Unimpeded is great for them too with their speed and being one of the few horses without it. Samurai are still amazing with this. Charge 6" with rush & flick a Kunai, Bonus Focus, Gatling someone away! Stealth & Unimpeded are awesome still... Stealthy, sneaky dudes in full samurai armour with giant Gatling guns is still a thing apparently... 1 1

Stealth and the gun attack at range seem like they don't work well with Charge Through and Bullet Proof.
whitters
Maybe on Aspiring Students? They do a lot of work but are very fragile and they might actually use the kunai.
touchdown
There should be some good synergy with Mei. Throw staggered on something from range, then force it to take mv duels from the Golem, Porkchop, or Mei herself

Ninja training still requires a model to be Living, unfortunately, so in Mei that's Rail Workers or Survivors on the minion side. Given Ride the Rails, the unimpeded part of the upgrade doesn't feel super important especially since none of her living models have walking forge to drop scrap. I don't really see any of her living enforcers/henchmen gaining much from the unimpeded or the stagger/stun throw, and feels like a lot of work/cost to get her crew's various MV simple duels buffed. Maybe something out of keyword/versatile for her, but...
touchdown
Unimpeded is useful for the first model to get the scrap down. Also staggered, stunned, and stealth are just generically good. So probably not worth it *just* for the MV duels, but there's a lot more going on. Also Mei's mv duel is 14, she has a lot of sz 3 models available. A mv 5 model with stunned needs an 11 or it takes 3 damage, and then still has to deal with 3 Mei actions. It starts adding up. You could also play her crew in a semi-control fashion I think. They have a lot of move the target actions and triggers, you combine that with staggered and you can really waste enemy AP.

How does Unimpeded help that first scrap? Since none of the walking forges can take the upgrade. Staggered or stunned can useful, but I probably want more than 1 duel a turn to gain advantage of the staggered. I can see the option of the pushing and such and then it is a consideration in that type of list.

It doesn't, I wasn't fully thinking (I guess technically you could have it on Mei herself, but that's almost certainly not worth it).
