Toughness Checks?

I'm curious because of the Toughness triggers, but when would a Toughness check come up, especially during Dramatic Time? The Core Book seems to just attach it to Wound totals.

Testing for unconsciousness when taking critical hits is a toughness check, so it’s mostly relevant when the Fated has lost all their wounds. There are a few attacks from FM characters that trigger toughness checks, too, but they’re rare.

That's what I figured but thought I'd ask. Guess if he really wants his trigger I could have something big n' nasty start to choke him out.

They could possibly get a manifest power thing using toughness if it's an important thing for their character. (I vaguely remember there may be a pursuit power that uses toughness for something!? Although I haven't read the books in a while)

The Suffocation condition is the other Dramatic time event that would trigger a Toughness check for this trigger.

Honestly it can be fairly good or very mediocre depending on circumstances and the fated's build. Giving access to a healing flip could extend the benefit.

The way the trigger my player chose reads is "Mask: After succeeding during Dramatic Time, gain Hard to Wound." The trigger's called It Doesn't Hurt Anymore I think.

Like the Second Wind mechanic from D&D 4th? With how deadly the combat can be it might not be a bad idea.

It would function similarly although in Malifaux it would be more like the Grit abilities that are common in the Bayou Faction. Be careful with granting a healing mechanic though, in the hands of a Munchkin it could cause some issues

I'm sure a couple Steamforged Executioners can fix any abuse of a healing mechanic.

But I'd probably do something like (1) Second Wind: Once per Dramatic Time take a test at Toughness 10. If you succeed, heal 1/2/3 wounds.

That could work though it would allow the trigger to be activated prior to testing for Unconsciousness if he pulls the . I don't see that as a huge Issue but I might also kick that TN up a few points just in case. The ability to heal is really potent.
