Why does Wyrd make fate decks that lack W/M/S indicators?

Recommended Posts

Title pretty much says it all.  Why make fate decks without the weak/moderate/severe indicators?  I know you can just memorize the range, and I know not all their games need it (like The Other Side), but really if you're designing a fate deck it should really include W/M/S indicators.

Wyrd, going forward, please make sure all your deck designs have some way of displaying this information.

Most have something, although it can be subtle, the retro deck has 1/2/3 blood stains on the cards to signify which for example.

I don't think any of their decks lack those indicators, save for games that don't need them. Twisted decks show lit gems to indicate severity.

Haven't checked all the decks but I think there is always something for that. For Tarot Fate Deck there is 1/2/3 Diamonds under the value of the card. The Arcane Fate Deck has also something similar. For M1E and M3E Fate Decks it is written on the cards.

Wich Deck where you thinking about?

All The Other Side decks lack them, despite the fact that their box says they can be used for Malifaux.  Yes, I know you "can" use them for Malifaux, but then again, you could even just use a normal deck of playing cards.

Also, while I don't own the Classic Fate Deck so I can't be sure they don't have them, I can't see any indication that they do.

I actually own more fate decks than I really need (M1E decks, M2E starter sets, the retro deck, the bad ink decks, etc), it just annoys me because it seems like such a simple thing to make sure is included in the design.

The Classic Fate Deck seems to be out of production since long ago. Perhaps Wyrd realized they made a mistake with this one and now take attention to that point.

For The Other Side Deck, I have none, so a good point for you.

Personnally, remembering that 1-5 is Weak, 6-10 is moderate and 11-13 is Severe has become an automatism and I don't look at the indicators any more.

Yeah, I mean it's not a trial for the ages or anything.  Just something I find annoying that seems unnecessary.

Also, a lot of the events I run are demos for new players.  Not just Malifaux, but also Through the Breach.  The indicators just make things easier.

I have a player in my current group who is new to Malifaux who almost bought a TOS deck thinking they were all equivalent in functionality (because honestly, why wouldn't they be) and if I hadn't been in the store I wouldn't have been able to explain the difference.

The classic fate deck has marks in the upper right corner in the embellishments to mark severity. They're very subtle.

But I'll concede your point; why not include them?

See those little lines/pips in the lower left and upper right? Between the two horizontal lines. 1 pip for weak. 2 for moderate. 3 for severe.

Pretty subtle, but it's there.

For new players, it can be a little difficult during the first games. It is a little bit sad for them if they prefer a TOS Deck but I don't see it as a  major problem. Perhaps also, Wyrd should not write that these decks can be used for Malifaux to avoid confusion.

For demos I generally lend a M1E Deck to the beginner as it is one of the best decks (beautiful artworks, all is written). I think the M3E Deck is also perfect for beginners.

Perhaps you could lend one of your decks during the first few games and when the player is at ease with the damage, he can choose to buy any deck he wants.

Okay, I see those now, but that's ridiculous.

Conceptually it's not even a bad idea.  Just make the slashes long enough to clearly cross both border lines and it would become much clearer.

Speaking from experience, playing malifaux with a standard deck of cards is REALLY hard for a new player.  Playing without the severity pips trips them up like twice.   Heck, a lot of the non-pipped fate decks tend to put people or fancy art on only the severe cards, so it's "kind of" marked for you.

Honestly, I've never noticed any severity indicators on cards (and I play with a retro Fate deck so apparently they're there) when playing.  Remembering the range in my head is much quicker than trying to identify which marks on a Fate deck indicate severity.  I really don't see how its an issue, but hey ho, it takes all sorts.

The deck I own (I don't remember the name, is the one where the jokers are ragdolls) has 1,2,3 lines to indicate damage, and usually all the decks I've seen used have them in some form. The only time they weren't visible was in a tournament with an opponent who used a standard card deck.

I am more dissappointed about the quality. Why are the new fate decks so flimsy plastic cards. Now I need to sleeve those because they are super thin.

It is the main part of your game. Sell us quality cards. Casino quality cards. I will buy those.

Is the M3E Fate deck that flimsy?  Or is it just the Print on Demand ones?

Strange.  Their official decks are usually decent quality.  Probably trying to save money!

I know, I have 3 but the newer one is worse.
