Assets Limits and Prototypes.

Smeagle

Question

I understand that the Abyssinian Allegiance card allows for Prototypes to be attached at the start of the game ignoring limits.

However the asset Overclocked allows you to attach more throughout the game. This asset does not stipulate that you ignore limits, only that you can not attach a prototype already in play, and that the unit may not already have a prototype...

Is this correct? Because if so, it severely limits a major aspect of Abyssinian tactics and makes Overclocked not worth taking at all.

You can't attach to either Champion (they already have assets atrsched usually) or a squad that has an adjunct (as that's an asset)..

It's a 2pt Stratagem that gives you two things you can do:

  • Take a prototype action with or without discarding a card, depending on whether you want to play the card again later in the game.
  • Bring out another prototype if you haven't loaded units out completely.

So, after buying that stratagem once per turn you effectively get to trade a card for taking a prototype action between activations.  I think that first bullet point is what causes the second bullet point to be more situational.

Disclaimer:  I've had Prince Unathi spend entire activations ordering people to use prototypes.  Even another Shock Baton attack can be good in the right circumstances.

Here's what you can do with stratagems that cost 2 tactics points:

  • An Honorable Death (1VP because your Commander just got killed) One-shot
  • Detonate Soulstone (Kill friendly fireteam to try to blow up enemies). One-shot
  • Overclocked
  • Deranged Laughter (Card fishing) One-shot
  • Medic (Flip over asset). Resuable
  • Spontaneous Healing.  Same as Medic.
  • Altar of the Deep.  Sacrifice an entire squad unit for tactics tokens.  One-shot
  • Bloody their Noses.  Turn an enemy unit from Glory.  One-shot
  • Keep Calm and Cary On.  Turn friendly unit from Glory and activate it again.  One-shot

Where you might find use for the second item that Solkan mentions:

  1. On a Titan (Dreadnought) that doesn't yet have a Prototype Asset that has 2 or fewer Assets (for any reason, including an Asset being scrapped to keep the Titan alive).
  2. On a Unit of Basotho Cavalry or Crow Runners that was recently summoned using Behind Enemy Lines.

Additionally, regarding its cost: if you have The Lord of Steel as one of your Commanders, it costs 1 Tactics Token to purchase to hand. For that one Token you get one extra action, discard a card each time and you can do this every turn without spending more Tactics Tokens. Need to use an Advance Order to claim an objective, but still want to make use of a Discus Grenade or Experimental Rocket? Use this card.

Also: with how the card is worded: on either use of the Stratagem, you can discard a card to keep it in hand. This means that you can purchase it early to have both options available the entire game, and later when Behind Enemy Lines comes up or a Titan Asset goes down, use it to hand out a Prototype Asset instead of take an action on a Prototype Asset that's already in play, then discard a card to return it to hand for use in later turns.

You get a lot of potential play out of a 1-2 Tactics Token cost Asset.
