Need Help Suggesting a Crew

Hi guys! So I have kindof a weird situation. My spouse loves playing Malifaux, and we have a lot of fun playing the game together. I have a smattering of factions, but they mostly like sticking to Gremlins. They assemble and paint slowly (because, in their words, "it's like a puzzle I have to pay someone $50 for to start over if I mess up") but they take a lot of pride in their models and show them off to all of their friends online. They play Gremlins and have two crews, Ophelia and Rocinante.

The problem is that they just aren't very good at the game. It's not that they can't be; there's been several games where we've been playing preconstructed crews that they did very well against a couple of our friends. But their win rate isn't very good. They don't mind, usually, because they really play mostly to show off their stuff and hang out with friends. But we're going to start having tournaments at our LGS soon and so they'd like to have a good idea of what they could play that they'd have a better chance at winning with.

They played tonight with a Rocinante crew that was very tanky and damage centric and they killed with it. They absolutely stole the game. (The score was very close because of a fumble where my leader was killed before they could complete Deliver a Message, but they had clearly won by the end of turn two.) They know just using Rocinante all the time isn't really tournament viable, but they really want to try to find something with that sort of a playstyle, very aggro and hearty, to bring to the table.

Frankly all I know for sure is that none of the kits I have (sub maybe Titania) play that way, so I thought I'd turn here for suggestions. They said they're not opposed to just playing Gremlins with friends and picking up a second faction for tournaments if there's one that would feel more natural to play and they'd see better results with. I'm pretty sure after tonight that they've just been trying to play this strategy with the wrong crew for it so far and they can kill it with the right choices, but I have no idea what to tell them they should buy. Thanks for the help!

I assume that Rocinate is Ulix. and my comments here are based on that premise

Firstly, you can happily play tournaments using only 1 or 2 masters and do well. You may need to hire different crews for various set ups, but you can do that with 1 master.  I would have thought that Ulix has a decent range of choices to fit most set ups.

Changing to different master or Faction may or may not work. But assuming that the style you want is Close combat aggressive in the opponents face asap there are several crews that can do that well enough to win. Obviously masters such as Lady Justice, Mei Feng, Misaki, Viktorias and Mah Tucket can easily be seen as close combat specialists that want to be in the enemy face as soon as possible. You can certainly get Marcus,, Dreamer, Ironsides, Zipp, Perdita, McCabe, Hoffman, McMorning, Lilith, Collodi, Levi, Parker, Jack, to have crews that do what you want

I guess in short there isn't an easy fix. I happily play in tournaments where I don't expect to win, because it gives me a chance to play multiple games in a day, against a wide number of opponents. I like to challenge myself as I do it, to try and help me become a better player, but I doubt I'll ever win a big event. You are capable of doing well with a single master in that sort of environment if that's what you want, but in most cases you will want a decent sized pool of models to select from. (A few masters can do well with a fixed crew). Its certainly possible that there is a different master out there that fits the style you are looking for, but I would have said that you can adapt most masters to fit the style you want to play.

I would not recommend the Viks if tankiness is desired.

Sticking with Gremlins, I would suggest getting Som'er who can play a brutal offensive game. He works really well with some of Ophelia's crew, Francois and Raphael. My main Gremlin opponent doesn't have any pigs, but i think you can have him effectively lead a pig crew as well.

Seamus or McMourning would be good options in ressers.

A Von Schill Freikorps crew sounds like it would match the play style you're looking for, but keep in mind he might be the worst Outcast master.

I'd normally agree, but I just faced a Survivialist Vik with Marlenna tethered on her as well. that's a lot of damage you need to get onto her to actually kill her. It was certainly less than was needed to kill my Df 7 Marcus with regenerate...

I had forgotten Von Schill, he certainly fields one of the more durable crews, and with help from the new upgrades he can have a few other tricks.
