My reaction to the third edition was better expressed by The Pointer Sisters (sorry if this has been posted before, I haven't read the 21 pages since I'm on vacation!)

I have been really keen for 3rd ed for a while now. Malifaux is such a good game, but there are a plenty of low-hanging fruit for a new edition, so I have been really pumped to see the new material. However, I must say this early presentation has left something of a bad taste in my mouth.

I play Neverborn and TT, and so I seem to have a significant number of models that will become obsolete. It is still early, and I wont panic until I see how it all pans out, but at the moment it reads like I am to be punished for my significant prior investment in Malifaux.

I have Lilith and Collodi from Neverborn that are getting grandfathered. I am losing Brewmaster from TT, who I literally just purchased, painted and based. I have the infiltration models for the now TT exclusive models – I do not imagine McCabe will be able to hire Gulid Hounds, Guild Sergeants, Guild Guard or Elli and Patti Ramone. In addition, I have a stack of mercenary models, which I could not see getting a specific mention, but the consensus seems to be they are not longer a thing?

All in all, I think about a quarter of my models could be getting shelved. Yes, I know technically I can still play Brewmaster, but not without buying all the faction cards, and not without further model investment in a faction I have zero interest in.

If the deleted models were equally split across the factions, it wouldn't be so bad, but the losses seem disproportionately weighted against some factions, and against people who bought mercs. A Gremlin player gets no models shelved, I lose three masters and probably an additional handful of models.

This has certainly dampened my excitement considerably.

Feel you mate, I've got a large Tomb Kings collection. Are you able to return them to the shop?  Most shops have a return policy...

I feel your pain. Every time I think about trying AOS with my friends I look at my Tomb Kings in the display case and get unreasonably angry.......

Having masters in the "Dead man's hand" subcategory suggests that future models and development will not be put towards those masters.

That hurts a lot considering how much time and money went into that doll crew I just painted :(

Do we know what the standard game size is now because if it's still 50 the master cost seems to take up about a quarter of the limit?

Depends of your first master is free or not (like henchman hardcore)

I've been a huge Wyrd fanboy from day one when the game first hit my old FLGS. Even when I didn't have a play group, time to play, or much money I still tried to buy models when I could which admitidly was rare but I very recently caught up and just have to buy the monthly releases. When some of my old play group visited we'd manage a game or two of 1E as none of us knew 2E or had the time to learn. Within the last year I've managed learn 2E, convince some friends and the wife to play (after listening to me rant about how much I missed playing the game for 6 years), and since our kids are a little older I actually have the ability to play at home without other responisbilities getting in the way (still can't get out to play at a store often but that's why I built my own table).

So saying I'm excited for 3E is an understatement and I applied for the beta as soon as I got home after finding out. I love the idea of keyword hiring and characters that have been in the lore being brough in or brought up after so long. I love the new card layout though I understand the concerns. Basically everything sounds great except the Dead Man's Hand. Though I fully support the idea of a narrative or competitive tournement structure as a way of handling this.

Maybe it's because I was heavily invested in Warmachine when Malifaux dropped and I started but I really prefer the way PP or Guild Ball handels moving characters forward with the Basic/Epic(1/2/3) and Basic/Veteran/Seasoned system. Everything is legal when not in narrative and they make advanced versions later that may change thier theme or playstyle completely. Now this doesn't affect me personally much  as I don't really get to play in events between work and family obligations and my friends generally accept whatever as long as it doesnt actually break the rules but on principle I don't like it.

Fair enough, but nothing to suggest massive amounts of models will be gone - for example Collodi's puppets. You may not have Collodi anymore, but I imagine that most of his normal crew will still be usable by other masters and may have new roles as a result.

lets says this is correct...in what faction? Do i now have to expand Everborn or will they move over elsewhere? Everything is speculation at this point...so my course of action will be: stop giving money to Wyrd untill they are more clear on this.

I don't know if someone has asked it before but I haven't read any message of the staff about it. Will the mercenaries be available on the 3rd edition? Thanks

I doubt this. Merc presented real problem in m2e edition (i.e. Burt and McTavish in Nellie's crew) so i guess Wyrd will try to avoid generating similar problems in m3e and will hack mercenary concept from the game.

And I actually doubt that.

Fluff-wise mercenaries in Malifaux are more than plausible. Loyalties are in constant limbo and it makes total sense for people working for the highest bidder.

From a gameplay-perspective I agree that mercs can be a Problem balancewise. Maybe the tax will increase? Or maybe there will be a restriction in numbers? e.g. just one or two mercs per Crew.

If having 2 Masters in one crew is by no means overly powerful against a crew with just 1 Master, I fail to see how the game has become anything but simpler and more boring, compared to the best game I've ever played, which is what we have now.

Isn't this what people said about M1 -> M2E though? And now we have the best game ever, so... let's wait and see and be sickeningly positive and optimistic :D

I totally agree with the last part. M2E is the best game I have ever playerd. But maybe M3E will be even better? As of now we can just  speculate.

So I'd rather be hopeful than pessimistic.

Regarding 2 Masters: yeh... to me this seems like Overkill as well. But I think wyrd will manage to make it work

A Master is just a powerful figure on the board. If you cost them correctly, then you can hire an equivalent amount of power in non master models and the game would still be balanced.

It was done in the current edition for henchmen, who could lead for free or be hired into a crew for some points, so its not an impossible situation (sure you only seem to  get them leading in Henchmen hardcore games in reality)

I have just recently gotten into Malifaux. After much reading and pestering of friends that played, I had just made a relatively large Neverborn purchase centered around Lilith only to find out she's effectively nixed come 3rd. Yes, she can be played casually, and yes she may be allowed in tourneys, but not having an absolute there bugs me beyond measure (I'm a Sith, get over it). Luckily, I still have the receipt (and they were just purchased two weeks ago), so come the morning they'll be returned. When I have concrete information in my hand - i.e. M3E Rules and all Stat Cards, I will potentially revisit the crew decision making process and purchase.

I don't like the idea of having two masters in one crew from purely aesthetical reasons, but I think it can be balanced by a) high cost of the second master, b) some limitations imposed on him (there can be only one Leader, after all). But yeah, I don't see why it is going to be introduced apart of novelty for novelty's sake.

This guy -->

...encapsulates my response. He thought he was talking about football/soccer but actually predicting my response about this announcement. M2E is complex and I love it. Best. Game. EVER! M3E hopefully won't dumb down a legendary game. Count me in regardless. As has been said earlier in this thread, we can choose which edition to play casually.

Lilith will return. It is inevitable. Collodi (my first Neverborn master) is only missing, he'll turn up, maybe in book 2 or 3 of M3E. Lynch, the slippery, treacherous bastard, has escaped our clutches for the time being, but Huggy has plans. Souls are worth more than drugs/casino income after all.

I have faith, Wyrd. Faith. Don't do an England on me and ultimately lose this one.

I would say "Let's face the music, and dance", but with Collodi missing, I'll have to wait and see about that music...

Colour me cautiously optimistic for the time being. Which, if you're wondering what colour optimistic is, is purple of course.

I've heard rumors PP almost went bankrupt during mk1->mk2 transition. I hope Wyrd knows what they are doing. M3E is probably exciting news for most players, but invalidating purchases may boost the phenomenon of 'people not buying new models during transition' quite a bit. I don't care personally, as I will still buy models I think look cool, but many people won't.

Well Wyrd probably had this in mind and probably why they did not want to announce it just yet, but I am with you on rule of cool comes first and rules come second.
